Summary: A good bargain!!
Review: Bought this as I was low on cash, and I haven't been disappointed since!! Worked like a charm out of the box with the provided USB cable!! But its not without its pros and cons:

CONS: Big and bulky. For those with limited space, you might want to rethink a smaller external model or an internal model. DVD write speed might not seem such a big deal, but waiting half an hour to burn a full DVD at 4X speed is slow... I think 8X drives are already out on the market. Another drawback is that the burning software included is Record Now (not the Max version), which is not really useful. You would have to get a copy of Nero 6 to make full use of this burner.

PROS: Works with almost all media I throw at it!! Plus, the DVD+R discs I have burnt so far work with both a Sony and Shinco DVD Player, my Dell DVD-ROM, and my beloved XBOX (phillips drive). Also, the design of the drive looks kinda cool... several friends have had that "OOOOO" look when they first spot it.

I don't know about the quality of the technical support and warranty, as I have never had a problem with it!!! All I know is that there's a standard warranty for 1 year, but really... for a $200- product it is not really worth the time running around to get it repaired if it breaks down.

All in all... I would recommend it to anyone who is just starting out with DVD burning. There are better drives on the market, but this will suit the beginner and even experts just fine.

Summary: The best +R/RW DVD burner
Review: Buy this burner, it is the best +R/RW burner in my opinion, I researched for over 3 months before decided on this HP DVD300e (external, dvd300i is internal). I bought this ... 1 month ago... Very happy with it since. So far I have not had a coaster. Successfully burned with Memorex, HP, Ritek, Meritline.com own brand, Supermediastore.com own brand +R or +RW discs. I can make backup of my DVD movies &play on my Pioneer 606D &all Apex DVD players. Works with both +R and +RW discs!

Ironically, my very expensive Denon 5000 DVD player does not play the +R/RW backups, yet the cheapest DVD players like Apex have not problem playing them...

Successfully burned with Memorex, HP, Ritek, Meritline.com own brand, Supermediastore.com own brand +R or +RW discs. Don't pay more than $2 for +R disc. and $3 for +RW discs.

Ironically, my very expensive Denon 5000 DVD player does not play the +R/RW backups, yet the cheapest DVD players like Apex have no problem playing them. You can even get a free Apex DVD player from creditgift.com

Forget about the -R/RW burners, -R/RW format is losing momentum, even one of the strong -R/RW forum member Pioneer (not to mention Sony) just announced to support +R/RW. +R/RW format is EXCLUSIVE supported by alliance members like HP, Microsoft, Dell. +R/RW design is superior &more flexible than -R/RW. ...

Summary: Don't buy this!!!
Review: Have have been with the HP Tech Support for the last 4 hours. After trying everything, the only thing they said is "Go buy a HP media disc and see if it works." So lets see, not only have I spent ...bucks for this piece of junk, another...dollars for CD-Rs and then ...for some Memorex CD-R (one of the reviews said that might help), now I have buy more CD-Rs? I haven't even tryed DVD burning yet. I should have looked at the reviews more carefully. I will NEVER buy another HP product again. You have been warned!

4 days later....
In fairness to the Company, they sent me another writer in 4 days. It worked fine, and I have been buring ever since.

Summary: Very hard to work with and frustrating
Review: I am not an expert with CD/DVD writers, but even I notice that there is something wrong with this drive. It is not just the software, I think the hardware has got some design problems. My Windows2000 is very slow in recognizing that the drive is being connected and in many cases it hangs or gets into long still sessions before getting into normal operations. Nero does not recognize my drive, so I have to use the provided software with it and it is not the greatest. The drive has even difficulty recognizing raw CDs I put in its tray. In many cases it rejects them, though they are perfectly fine. In general I think you should look somewhere else for a good CD/DVD writer.

Summary: Great DVD Burner
Review: I am not sure why some folks don't like this HP DVD writer. But first let me tell you what I am using it for. I buy a CD then I burn it to my hard drive, then I sell the CD back to a used CD store. Keeps my music collection at a lower cost, and allows me to utilize the music in MP3/etc formats. After burning 500 cd's to my hard drive, I began to get concerned about back up.

I bought this, and I have backed up my 500 cd's of mp3s to DVD's. It only took 5 to do it. Five DVD's of back up.

It was very easy to use, and did the job in typical fashion.. not the fastest on earth, but it did what I wanted.

As it turns out, my external hard drive did end up failing, but my music was not lost.

So, for my needs, this device paid itself off easily, considering the costs of having to repurchase 500 cd's at $14-$20 a pop.

So, be the judge. I use it for Mp3/Data back up and it works like a champ. I have not tried to copy Dvd Movies yet, but I really don't have any need to do that. yet.
