Summary: Pretty Good
Review: I needed an external drive for my laptop, one which support the older USB 1.1 connection and this one caught my attention with it's design and low price. The drive works very well. I get a 4X burning speed, which is acceptable considering I don't have a USB 2.0 port. It's not portable and doesn't function as a portable cd player, but frankly why would I want to use a CDRW as a cd player. It's easy to set up and works fine with Easy CD creator (included software). The only problem I have is that it doesn't work for iTunes, at least not for me. I found that a bit frustrating since iTunes doesn't let you use 3rd party software to burn cds.
However, it does work with Napster 2.0 and I'm forced to switch from iTunes due to that. Bottom Line: consistant drive, works well, but keep in mind that it doesn't work with iTunes for me and it might not work for you.

Review: To some extent, greed is the corporate order now. The fact that most (established) companies are only interested in meeting their profit-targets relegates quality to the background.
Yes, this "Philips Jack-Rabbit 24x12x40-external-CD-ReWriter" spots a healthy 8MB data buffer capacity. It supports USB 2.0, as well as both Windows and Mac operating systems. But that is all! Its overall performance hovers on the average. It has very limited features.
Whereas many no-name external CD burners come with earphone ports and volume control buttons for playing music CDs, this Philips CD-RW has neither. It could not even boast of an ON/OFF switch or button; and only turns on when connected to a PC or Mac. Please, do not look at this article, if you hope to enjoy music CDs directly from your external CD-RW.
Despite its advertised 8MB buffer capacity, and 'Seamless Link' buffer-underrun protection, expect this CD-RW to produce one 'coaster' for every seven CDs it records well. In fact, its mediocre bundled-software is so lousy that it won't let you ascertain if the underrun problem is from the recorder itself, or as a result of poor quality CD media.
Finally, before jumping at its popular Philips trademark, note that this CD-RW has just an average output. It has no outstanding feature! And, quite unlike many external CD-RW, you cannot use this "Philips JR24CDRW" as a portable CD player. I am very reluctant to recommend this CD-RW, but I hope you make a good choice. All the best!
