Summary: Terrible Support -
Review: I bought an external version of this product and returned it for the iomega product - which works fine.

While the software that comes with this may be OK for recording music - it is not sufficient for creating CD's with software on them. Specifically, one cannot write a customized volume label on the CD - It writes one for you. So your CD is labeled X56zsFSFD: (or something similar) when you open it in "my computer" (or explore it in the windows explorer).

The worst part is the customer service! I educated quite a few HP technicians on what a volume label was. Every single one thought it was a sticky label that you paste on the front of the CD. It took about 1 zillion emails to HP "support" - each one with a different technician - to find out that their product just couldn't do the job. All this while I was on a tight schedule to deliver the CD's!

I bought the HP CD writer without much research - I thought, "It's an HP how bad can it be?" Well I found out.

Summary: Great starter burner
Review: I bought this burner about two years ago and it has been very reliable. I only burnt a few coasters, but this was due to my Windows 98 installation and a few bugs I must have picked up over the Internet. I have just bought a TDK 52x24x48x VeloCD but haven't installed it yet, as I am building a new computer. I am writing this review at this time because of the review by JJ from Tempe. I was amazed upon reading it, because I had the exact same problem with Memorex CD-RWs! I was using the 80 min variety, but it burned coaster after coaster. I was beginning to think that the problem was with the burner, but it did fine with all the other brands of CDs. Now I know what the problem was.

Summary: hurry and buy faster then the prices go up
Review: I don't have much to say about the cd-wr because i never bought one due to the raise in price overnight. So if you are planing on buying this product, and it is marked down, be sure to buy it right away, before they decide to jack up the prices again.

Summary: This drive is a must have
Review: I have been looking around for a cd-rw for a long time now and i finaly bought this one cause i had read reviews on Amazon.com and i herd nothing but good about this product. And this product is really good. I purchased it for the same price as on Amazon.com but not from this site. I wish i would have becasue at the time i bought mine they were giving a cd labler for free when you bought the cd-rw. The software is so easy a 5 year old could make their own cd. And it comes with a cd-r so you can burn right when you get it set up. i have burned over 100 cd's and not a single one of them were coasters. This drive is a very good product and an easy one to use.

Summary: I am a fan of the HP CD-RW drives.
Review: I have never had any problems with HP7100 drive but I figured that it was time to upgrade. This drive is just a reliable as my last one and my next one far into the future will aplso be an HP. However, if you are using Windows 2000 be ready to spend a little money on the software upgrade from HP for it to work in 2000 or buy Adaptec CD-Creator 4.02.

Summary: Pleased with my purchase of this product.
Review: I installed this drive into my Gateway G6-233 with no problems. The package comes with a CD that includes the software and a helpful video on how to do the install. The total process took about 20 minutes at a leisurely pace. No special technical skills are required, but it helps to have a general idea of what the various parts inside your computer do and how they are connected. I did wish that they had included an audio cable to connect the CD-Writer to my sound card. This will only be a problem if you want to keep your existing CD drive and need two cables.

I am new to "burning" CD's and was somewhat surprised to learn that it takes just over an hour to format a disk for data use. However, HP allows you to do the formatting in the background and begin to use the disk within minutes. A disk for audio use is ready without any formatting. I use the data disk to back-up my Quicken data and this is now done in seconds instead of the few minutes it took with the floppy drive. I have done some audio CD's and the sound quality is excellent. Use CD-R's for music and CD-RW's for data. CD-R's can be played on most CD players, CD-RW's can't.

Summary: HP 8250i
Review: I purchased this drive about two weeks ago and have found it to be a very good drive. Against recomendations I have burnt audio at 4x with no problems. The only thing I do not like about the product is the inclusion of Ez CD creator version 3.5 instead of version 4.

Summary: Beyond the Zip drive
Review: I was knocked out to discover how easily this unit installed. The installation software walks you through the install, and the very brief install booklet is clearly illustrated. No ambiguities and it worked the first time. Anyone can do this.

Yes. You can make music CDs that will work on your CD players, and data disks that will work on non-CD writer drives. It's great for that.

But the best part for me is that this unit very inexpensively and easily has taken care of my backup needs. This CD Writer is far superior to a ZIP or Super Drive for backup for three reasons. First, the media is cheap--a dollar or less for 650 MB CDR media versus the much higher cost for ZIP or Super Drive media. Second, moving your files to another computer is easier with CD ROM media. Nearly all computers have CD drives, but many don't have ZIP or Super Drives. Lastly, CDR and CDRW media are taking over. Check the shelves in your computer stores and you'll find that ZIP and Super Drive media are far less abundant than CDR and CDRW media.

For the money, this drive is everything I need. HP has made a solid, reliable product at a great price.
