Summary: Beautifull piece of Hardware!!
Review: A wonderfull piece of hardware! I just received this new Plextor drive and im in Love with it. It is one of the best burners i have ever owned. I am satified with its capability of writingat 16X and even more impressed that other computers besides my own can actually read cd's as well. This burner has solved my problems with my old burner I could burn at 8x speed but my home stereo would not recognize my cd as music cd so I was stuck recording using 4x. With the new plextor on the other hand im writing at 16x and my steare actually accepts them as music cd's. This is a great burner and keeps with the reliability from plextor and their products. if your a speed demon like I am you want the best and this is it! :)

Summary: PLEXTOR & BURN-PROOF Winning Combination!
Review: After going through 6 weeks of Sony! well you know what I mean, I finally took everyone's advice and bought this burner. WOW! Burning MP3 files at a true 16x....incredible!!! The Adaptec software that is provided is very user friendly. (Would have been nice to get the deluxe version) but no problem. Just remember to load in the Plextor manager along with the Adaptec. It seems to like that. I wanted to be sure the BURN-proof was working....and was it ever. I went out and retrieved mail, edited and printed from office 2000 and surfed the web, and still it kept on burning! NO coasters here! Buy the Plextor 16x10x40, and save yourself a boatload of trouble. Way to go Plextor!

Summary: Faulty drives!!!
Review: I am currently on my THIRD (yes, THIRD!) 16/10/40a Plextor drive. I had to return the previous two because they were faulty. Luckily I work pretty close to Plextor HQ. The first 2 drives broke down after about 1 months use with exactly the same problem - it couldn't detect CD's in the drive. Upon returning to Plextor the second time I was told it was a faulty batch (TLA # 0000), and given a third drive. This drive has just failed on me too. This time, it causes my PC to lock up, and it cannot read CD's anymore. Quite frankly I am not impressed in the slightest. Poor engineering, quality control, or something has caused this drive to fail repeatedly. I have heard great reports about the Plextor 12/10/32 and will probaly get one of those. Something is seriously wrong with the 16/10/40.

Summary: You need look no further
Review: I am going to keep this short.

This is the best money I have spent on my new box. I shopped around and read reviews of about 20 burners. I had my mind set on the 12/10/32 but when I went to order there were none but they had this one. I got it.

I have yet to make a coaster and the Adaptec Easy CD Creator is very easy to use.

I have to admit that I have yet to play with the CD-RW yet but I will do that this week to back some stuff on my machine.

Plextor only makes Storage devices and that so me says they know their craft. If you are looking for a good burner buy an HP or Sony. If you want a GREAT burner buy this one.

Summary: Another PlexWriter: Perfect DAE and very reliable.
Review: I have been using the 1610 for quite some time now, and PlexWriters since the 412 (several hundred burns with PlexWriters by now). Most of what I wrote in the review for the Plexwriter 12432 still applies, this is another great Plextor. The new most welcome addition is perhaps Sanyo's Burn Proof technology (Also implemented in the 1210A and 1210S), which helps you greatly reduce the number of wasted CDR blanks. HSRW support is also great, but 10x RW media is still somewhat hard to find. A great improvement is also the much better performance of the newer ATAPI chipsets used by Plextor when it comes to DAE (digital audio extraction) quality. This unit extracts audio as well as the now classic UltraPlex 40, perfect DAE. Very valuable if you do a lot of audio extraction (For MP3 encoding, Audio CD backups, etc). You can also use this unit in UltraDMA, by setting the reserved jumper. The feature is not documented and might result in crashes with a few motherboards, but in general, I've been using it with great success.

Overall, great unit, quality engineering. You won't regret spending the money. After all, it's a Plextor.

Summary: Fast, Quiet, and works like a charm
Review: I have been using the Plextor16/10/40 for about 2 months now and have not yet experianced a problem. I burn about 30 CD's a month on regular and this is by far the fastest drive I have used so far, I have used the Yamaha 16 spped CD-RW as well and the Plextor beats it by about minute and is quieter also.

I have switced the unit between all 3 of my Computers andit works perfectly on all 3. The inclusion of the burn-proof technology works like it should reducing coasters to 1 in 2 months of burning. The Plextor is also compatiable with CloneCD and it does read sub-channel data.

I guess the only thing I can find fault with is its software package. I personally despise Adaptec Easy CD creator which is the software it comes with. It does get the job done as is pretty simple to start with, however a more robust burning software like Nero would be better suited for this drive. The Plex manager software is also pretty darn bad. It seemed that it liked to crash alot and was buggy as all get out, so I just unistalled it and no more problems.

Overall the hardware performs exaclty like it should, burning at a full 16x all the way across the disk. The software is its weak spot. If you are an avid burner than you will probably want to upgrade to Nero, but the Adaptec will get any beginner up and burning in no time. The Plex manager software shouldjust be avoided at all cost and not be installed as it caused a number of crashes on all of my computers.

Summary: great burner...when it's not under repair!
Review: i originally bought a 161040A drive back in 3/01, after reading the gushing reviews - most of which are true, it is a very good burner. however, i have since have had problems with 2 drives within a 6 month period. These problems were not software related - the actual drives went south - the first drive lasted approx. 1 month with about 60-70 burns. Fortunately, their customer support is very good, however, i was without a burner for over a month and a half waiting for their super slow warranty replacement process. After finally receiving my replacement drive in 5/01, it performed flawlessly, with approx. 250 burns completed, it bit the dust just last week (mid 8/01). What a disappointment for the time and $$ spent on what is regarded as one of the top drives. I have never had this much trouble with a piece of electronic equipment and i do not abuse my equipment. i purchased an HP 9700i 16x burner as a replacement (which has performed equally as well but a little slower than the plextor - only noticeable if you're looking at your stopwatch) until plextor can send me a new drive...when and if i get the replacement.

Summary: 1 YEAR PLUS AND STILL BURNING
Review: I purchased my Plexwiter a little over a year ago. I installed it in my Emachines computer running windows ME. Installing took about 30 minutes using the cable select feature. Software install went smoothly. I did ugrade the Easy cd creator that came with it to the ver.5 Plainum. I have burned well over 500 cd's so far with this drive. Have copied lots of old photos that I scan onto cd's as well as music. Using it to back-up important files as well. Which has saved me much grief over the last year. I purchesed this drive because of reviews of it. I have never had to deal with tech support because it has worked perfectly since installed. Use it everday to view video clips in widows media player. It is realy a champ.
