Summary: Exercise caution
Review: I purchased this type of CDRW and had problems from the start. The store I purchased it from refused to accept it back unless the manufacturer provided proof it was defective.
When I contacted the Philips Tech group, all I received was automated messages about how to install the device and a number to call if that didn't work. When I called the number, they told me my operating system was defective. When I installed a different operating system and the CDRW still didn't work, they told me it was my computer. when I replaced my computer, they told me the warranty was over. When I went to look for technical data on the CDRW, the Philips USA website was unable to locate the CDRW type PCRW804K17 or even PCRW804. I would recommend trying a product from a different company. My CDRW does make a moderately good placeholder for an empty computer bay.

Summary: It only lasted for a year :(
Review: I've bought it in 01/08/01, started to use it on February (It was bought on the USA) and it was doing fine, untill some weeks ago. Now it seems not to recognize the blank media. I'm dissapointed because I thought Phillips was a good brand of electronics :(

Summary: Great Burner
Review: I've had my Philips CD burner since May of last year (2001). I have never recieved an error with it and the cds are perfect practically every time I burn a disc. I've done entire mp3 discs with 150+ songs and every one comes out as crisp as before I burned it. I've also done cds with 3000+ files and don't receive errors when I go to use it. And that goes for every time I burn those types of cds.

I've tested the burner out with Nero to see how fast it could actually read. Because of the fact Nero only tests the drive out for a short amount of time, I was unable to get a clear idea of its max, but the drive was reading at around 19x and still increasing in speed. Now, you can compare that to my regular drive that says it will do 40x, but only reached about 4 or 5.

In May it was a great deal at the price and, in my opinion, still is today.

Summary: works fine for me.
Review: I've had this drive in my computer for over a year now
and I have only one slight complaint.
The little silver door that flips down broke off.
Other than that it works fine.
I have only made a few bad burns,
and I can be honest and say they were probably my fault.
This is a GOOD drive for the money.

Summary: BAD BURNER BLUES
Review: Just got a PCRW804K17 on ebay for $12.00. I thought WOW!! What a deal!!! Sure, it was an older model, but was in mint condition. I soon found out why. It never worked, therefore was never used. This piece of JUNK does not work with XP, and apparently from all the other reviews (and searching myself) Philips has not released drivers for XP. After searching Philips website, it appears they tried to cover up making this drive. I only wish I had did my homework (reading reviews) before placing a bid.

Summary: [NOT GOOD]
Review: Like all Philips brand products I have purchased it works fine at first then after a very short while it stops working. I'd save up and spend a little more money on a decent burner if I had it to do over again...

Summary: Philips PCRW804K17
Review: This thing is a piece of junk. It worked OK for about a year, only ruining 5 or 6 CDRs. Then one day it started opening and closing on its own, almost constantly, every time my computer was on. It's like it was sticking its tongue out at me! It hangs up every time I try to burn a CD now.

I called Philips tech support, but they told me it would cost me ($) to talk to them, since it was out of warranty, and they couldn't guarantee the expensive conversation would solve my problem. Then they referred me to their cryptic website, where I could supposedly get free tech support. I have emailed them with my problems, but no one from Philips has contacted me. They probably know they have a lemon on their hands, and are scared of all the angry customers. Seeing all the bad reviews on this site just confirms that.
