Summary: horrible product
Review: I purchased this writer with high expectations. Installation was fine and easy. But when I went to write cd's I had problems. The main reason I wanted this cd writer was so that I could write audio cd's. I wrote CD-rw's fine, without any problems (even though the speed was no where near rating), but when I went to write CD-r's, all that I got was a cd with uncountable skips, pops, and clicks. Troubleshooting helped me none. This was not a software problem, nor was it the brand of CD. (I tried several, by the way) Calling customer support, (long distance, NOT toll free) I finally got through, and then the technician that I spoke to took an hour to finally tell me he didn't know what the problem was. So, I ripped the cd writer out of my system and sent it back. All that I was left with was about 15 coasters (the product of my many tries) and strong feelings toward hp. That is why I give this product 1 star. If there were no stars, that would be better. If you are looking into buying this, do NOT!

Instead, you should buy Plextor's 12/10/32. I purchased one after my mishap with the hp, and it works superbly. It created a cd in no time, and the quality is excellent. They HAVE toll free support, and a marvelous product. I found the Plextor to be cheaper in price than the hp, but much better quality.

Summary: Great features, reliability.
Review: I really like the HP writer series. I own a 9100i myself, and I have friends who own the newer models. They are all dependable. I have had very few problems with burning a CD with errors. These writers have the ability to 'test' the CD to be sure not to cause errors (which would be wasting a CD-R), so this feature is nice. The software they come with are easy to install, and easy to learn. It was a Cd wizzard to walk anyone through making a CD. So for all of you who have trouble figuring software out, have not fear, this one's covered. As far as I've seen it only has one drawback: They do not recognize 700MB CDs. You can use them, but it will only lety you use up to 650 MB. All in all, it's a great product. Hewlett Packard has always had reliable products to me. The price may be a little high, but for a product that you know won't let you down, I didnt' hesitate.

Summary: Good for Data, but I wouldn't use for music
Review: The one I've used is one I didn't install, but having installed other CDRW's before, this one should be easy. HP is consumer oriented and my experience with their products is that they are easy to install and work well. That said, I wouldn't use this unit if you are solely interested in burning music CDs, either copying entire CDs or copying to disk and then compiling your favorite songs, for example, to another CD. I've used the HP software included here, but found the Nero burning software better. However, even with Nero, I still found skips on ultimate burned CD. I have no experience burning MP3s to CDs, so see other reviews for that.

Data CDs are another story. I have had no problems and routinely back up on CDRW critical data. I rarely use the 3.5 floppy anymore and probably won't use it unless someone else has to have a floppy. For the price it's unbeatable, but if you want one for music I would recommend Yamaha CDRWs.

Review: This CD-R/W writer is excellent. I've burned 15 different CDs today just testing it out from my older burner (Yamaha 2x2x16 (Which I will say still works flawlessly, it was just old)), and have had zero bad burns. Contrary to some of the reviews here, there aren't problems with audio ticks and it can burn 80 minute CDs just fine. HP's SOFTWARE, however, does limit you to 74 minutes. But if you use a GOOD cd burning software package, like Roxio Easy CD Pro 5, you can do 80 minute CD's just fine. My suspicion with audio CD's with audible ticks is one of four things: The CD's are not rated for 10x burning (common problem)- make sure you buy CD's rated for at least 12x burning with drives like this, the CD's are poor quality- my advice is stay the hell away from cheap Memorex CD's for audio... TDK spindles seem to be fine, the computer's transfer speed may not have been high enough- try using DMA, and lastly, don't do anything while you're burning- you can slow the machine down enough that a tick and be placed on the CD accidentally. Also beware that some CD players simply might not like burned CDs. My car CD player doesn't like the yellow-green ones (Memorex in particular) or the black ones... the CD's with a true blue base seem to work best overall.

And FYI for everyone: MP3's DO NOT degrade per download. They are digital files, they CANNOT degrade. Cassette tapes can degrade when copying as can VCR tapes... but they're not digital files... digital files do not lose quality no matter HOW many times they are copied. Sorry... just had to put that out there.
