Summary: Make sure you have DVD+RW media
Review: In addition to CD-ROM recording, this excellent drive from Sony burns DVD+R/RW discs, i.e., the "plus" standard of DVD recording. It can NOT be used with DVD-R/RW ("dash") media. It's been quite reliable. The downside to the drive is not due to the drive itself, but rather the media: DVD+RW (write-many-times) is still not popular and may be be compatible with many DVD-ROM drives and certainly most DVD players. DVD+R (the write-once-only media) has better compatibility. One last thing about DVD burning is the media is still quite expensive... and you cannot duplicate your favorite DVD movies! :)

If you wish to save some money, you may look into DVD burners from HP or Toshiba. Avoid generic brands with unpronounceable names. :)

Summary: It is what it says
Review: This drive by Sony is more for the beginners at DVD writing. If you are not capturing video at 720x480 res, you must figure out the proper res so the MyDVD software can process the clip. The Included software (B's Recorder Gold and B's Clip) is much easier to use than other brand CD burning software. The drive works very good in using DVD+RW discs. I have used Sony brand and Memorex brand discs and both work well. The drive DOES not use DVD/R discs so dont even bother with it. Though you can use DVD+RW discs fine, they are playable on the drive and any multimedia compatable home set DVD players. You may have a little trouble with the B's clip if you have any other packet writing software installed. First installation my system butted. I use a PIII 1.3gh w/1gb ram. I uninstalled the CD Creator Platinum 5 packet writing, installed the B's clip, then reinstalled the CD creator platinum 5, it works fine now. I use this drive in conjuction with a Yamaha 16x CDRW drive and both are working fine. Its takes a little to get used to it, all in all the drive does what it says! Dont feel awkward about this drive if others cannot figure out how to use it :)

Summary: It is what it says
Review: This has been one of the most frustrating experiences and I wish I never had purchased this product. When I try to use it, it caused my computer to crash/shut down and start to reboot. I am on w2000 and have uninstalled and reinstalled trying to figure out the problems. The instructions say it is not compatible with other "packet writing" software, but I am not sure what that means? No other program says it is "packet writing". So I removed my CD Rom RW software, then my Dazzle software, then my ULead software, etc. Still my system crashes when I go to use it. When my system recovers, I get a message that one of my disks has errors on it (each time) so it goes thru a diskcheck and fixes my local drive. Finally one time, I got blue screen and had to reinstall my whole system because after two days of trying to disable all my drivers, my computer would not start. Another $375 spend on Microsoft Tech support, and they finally didn't know what to do and told me to rinstall the system and all programs. The instructions are terrible. You get certain software called B's clip and B's clib gold, which I still wonder are these both packet writing software and perhaps they are incompatible with each other???? It also came with a program called MY DVD for recording, and I thought is this "packet writing" software???? To this date I don't know what those terms are and no one else uses that term. I don't know why it is incompatible, or what it is incompatible with. My computer has 1.1 gig RAM and it says it doesn't overrun the buffer, but this is the most frustrating experience and no one to help me. They have no tech support numbers, no web site help for this and the instructions are terrible. No short cut, nothing direct, just these "cutsie" instructions filled with acronyms and no start and no finish. I am left not knowing if I should load all of the software, part of it or just what. In any event it doesn't work and I feel like I got ripped off ...not just my money, but my time and all the time to reload my computer software. Perhaps a little bit about what this product does and does not do. What programs you need to use with it. What the included programs do and why use them. What programs are incompatible. And telephone number for thech support. Even the Sony web site has not fixes for this. I assume it is W2000 compatible, but I can only guess because I still don't know what it should do and what programs make it do what. I can see I am not alone out there. I am further disapointed learning it doesn't work with DVD-R (I bought one DVD-RW, and 9 DVD-R's with it. I now find out the DVD-R's are also incompatible. Although that wasn't my problem, I can see that there seems to be a problem with almost everything about this DVD RW drive. I wish I never bought it as it is a terrible waste of money and I sure wish SONY would take it back because I am over this piece of junk!!

Summary: You should do some research first...
Review: You need to do some research first. This drive only writes in the DVD+RW format on DVD+RW media. The DVD standard, ie. most widely compatible format is DVD-R, which this drive does not support. This drive of course also writes CDR and CDRW, but you can get the Sony Spressa CDRW Drive...to do that. I almost bought this drive due to the misleading marketing of these drives, but now I know.

If you want a true DVD compatible burner (DVD-R), buy the Pioneer or the Philips.
