Summary: deceptive manufacturer
Review: Don't buy from this deceptive manufacturer, their service is the worst I have ever had!
I got the same model half year ago, and it is not working anymore! Their products will just last for a little longer than the warranty period.
And, the wosre thing is their *customer service*. I called for help and they didn't try to answer you any question or ask you the details, but ask you to pay 19.99 for even answering some simple questions! In addition, they told me this is what their service should be. DON'T BUY from SONY AGAIN!!
WORST EXPERIENCE ever!

Summary: Fast but flaky
Review: I bought the Sony Spressa thinking that it would be a good gadget for my Sony VAIO laptop. Since I opened that box I didn't have time to enjoy it. I'm sure it's a ... of a burner but for the past 3 months I'm having all kind of problems (from the cable that is not compatible to my laptop to the driver itself that is not being found by the laptop). I have also formatted my HD twice and installed two different Windows versions when it finally worked (but still not as promissed). Sony recently released a patch for this driver that I've installed hoping to solve all the problems for good, but what happened is that it just stopped working at all. This is something .... After spending 3 months of my life, and some hundred dollars and after installing the "patch" I feel like the dumbest person on Earth.

The customer service is horrible, the manual and on-line documentation are extremely poor and I'm very very upset about it. I mean, I have bought two state-of-the-art Sony devices and they simply don't work together. This is ridiculous!

Summary: I Like It
Review: I bought this for mass storage and CD burning of audio discs. So far so good. Good sound quality, ease of use, etc. Tech support was excellent!

Only problem was that I use a Sony VAIO laptop with DVD/CD-Rom drive, and to copy from this drive slows down the recording time, but tech support told me how to get around this by using the unit as reader first and then recorder. No coasters or underruns--whatever they are! I like it so far.

One other thing-- though my Sony VAIO has i.link, I still needed a firewire card bus adapter to use the unit, and the one I have is a Belkin. Easy install, and works great with the spressa.

Summary: Suprisingly a bad Sony product
Review: I purchased this CD-RW drive and could not get it to work, the install did not work correctly, and the drive would get buffer underuns very often when burning CD's. I returned this drive and bought another USB cd burner and have not had any problems.

Summary: Fast but flaky
Review: I've had this one for a while now, and no end of configuration and compatibility issues. It came with some software that works ok, but is very awkward compared to Toast. I have been unable to get Retrospect to work with it on any backup larger than 1 CD; multiple rounds with Retrospect tech support didn't help, and I haven't been able to prove yet that Sony tech support even exists. I'm about to buy some other drive and consider this one scrap.

It does have a nice case, and works fast when it works.

Summary: Great Speed and power!
Review: My only complaint about this drive is that it isn't bundled with Roxio Toast. But that was an inexpensive upgrade since this is not my first CDR. A couple of 100 disc spools down and who knows how many more to go. I had to burn 50 hybrid CDs for one job and this drive made very short work of it. This drive is supported by Toast versions 4.1 and up. I use this drive to back up data at work and to transfer my record collection to CD. Audio CDs burn in only 6 minutes or less.

I also like the size and firewire connection. Usually it sits next to my G4 but it's small enough to fit in my laptop case so I can use it with my ibook.

Summary: One of the best
Review: One of the best CD-RWs on the market! I've gone through several CD-RWs over the years, no other has worked so well, as the FireWire Spressa CD-RW. With other drives I've had problems switching between systems (PC and Macintosh) but this one easy to install and worked right out of the box. great deal-- this is the one to buy!

Summary: Chronic burning problems and mean support staff
Review: The single star I give this drive is for its wonderful use value as a doorstop (I have the external version). Although this drive has feet allowing it to be positioned on its side, this makes the drive completely inoperable. The proprietary software interface must have been designed by a teenage gaming enthusiast (cutsie graphics with no intuitiveness), who saw fit to include option buttons that are not even clickable. Furthermore, despite the packaging's claims that this is "simply the best software suite available," there are no options when trying to burn a ISO-9660 CD, not even Mac to PC naming conventions (an important option that is well-supported by Adaptec's Toast prgram, which is sadly unsupported by this terrible drive). After lowering the burn speed to 4x (far below the advertized 10x), I still got lots of errors, and even when the software claimed the burn was successful, several files were corrupt. I called Sony, only to be put on hold for 55 minutes before being connected to tech support, who, with great disdain, told me to "read the manual" (I had) and "learn how to burn a CD." I've been burning CDs for years without problems using other drives and software. She also instructed me to "use only Sony CDs," which is completely absurd. If you are looking for a headache, buy this drive right away! Otherwise avoid it at all costs.
