Summary: Driver Confusion
Review: Once this thing is installed, it works great. However, I had trouble installing the drive because Windows could not find the driver on the installation CD. Customer support insisted that the driver was in the HotBurn software. I finally downloaded the driver from the Iomega website. After running a Windows Update and updating the Intel USB chipset from the Intel website, I was able to get Windows to search for the driver. Still not found on the CD and HotBurn does NOT install the driver. I finally found it and installed it from Windows/Drivers. That's where the Iomega .exe download put it.

Summary: No Wonder It's [Inexpensive]
Review: This CD Burner just doesn't cut it, especially if you're a Mac user. I have tried running this unit on my Mac clone and it simply does not work under Mac 9.1. I corresponded with techsupport via email and it was reasonably smooth (they took two days to reply, but that's not that bad). They sent me a copy of Toast which is what this unit shipped with until HotBurn came out.

They also don't tell you that USB 2.0 isn't supported by versions of the MacOs prior to OS X. This should have been printed on the box, in addition to the fact that this machine doesn't like PCI upgraded computers.

The firewire product probably works a lot better. It's also twice as much, which says it all.

Summary: Flawless - works every time
Review: This drive has been great right out of the box. Maybe it's because I follow instructions, but I didn't have any problems installing this device (although its likely because every system is different - I have Windows XP). I can also recommend uninstalling the shipped software especially if you are using Windows XP. XP sees this device as a CD-RW and provides support to effortlessly write files as if it were just another hard drive.

Summary: Technical Support Woes
Review: This item doesn't get just one star because of the product - it gets one star because of their (lack of competent) technical support. I really liked this drive when I got it. It has a sleek design, and it was so simple to install. But, I couldn't burn CD's. So I set off troubleshooting, to no avail. I exchanged literally 20 emails with technical support, all of them telling me to try something different. Finally I called technical support to try to get a live person to walk me through troubleshooting. Well, their best suggestion was to run disk cleanup, then defragment my hard drive, and then it should work. He didn't bother to tell me that defragmenting can take more than 12 hours, and that you can't actually use your computer while you were doing it. Still, I did it. Tried to burn a CD, and nothing happened. Emailed technical support again, and the response was to try to read a regular, commercial CD. Tried. Didn't work. Diagnosis: defective unit. Now, why wouldn't the very first person at technical support tell me to try that? Would have saved much aggravation. Then, to top it all off, they wanted me to either a) pay for my own shipping to send the defective unit back, or b) give them my credit card number to guarantee return of the defective unit. Either option required me the hassle of mailing. So, I wound up just taking the thing back to the store for a refund. And I'll never buy an Iomega product again, purely because of the bumbling technical support.

Summary: Go carefully Mac Users
Review: This item works fine most of the time. The included software includes a note telling Mac users to download Mac software from Iomega's web site (where you'll find a charge for it). A call to their customer service quickly answered my questions (and the gentleman was very helpful). There is no current software for the Mac, but the Toast Lite "should work." With only occasional freezing of our machine, we have found it's a fine back up when it does work and look forward to Iomega sending us software when it's available.

Summary: sleak looking
Review: this sleak looking external cd burner is great if you don't have any more space in your pc. took me a while to figure out that you need to have it plugged directly into your pc and not a usb hub. still having little problems but it is fun to make music cds.
