Summary: Not bad.. compared to the last one I bought
Review: This burner is pretty good. At first I was having problems with the speed of the burner but i replugged everything back in and it was efficient. I wish I had bought the firewire version of this predator though. For 30 dollars more, you can burn a cd in half of the time, but this is a pretty good burner. I am satified with my purchase.

Summary: will work with windows ME
Review: One last thing I forgot to mention- I have windows ME on my computer and even though Easy CD creator (the software provided for PC's) was not meant to be used on Windows ME, it will still work. The software mentions that it is compatible only with windows 95/98/2000, but I have had no trouble using it with the ME version. The deluxe upgrade may be the culprit as I have not been able to get that to work properly.

Summary: Great!!!
Review: I have had this burner for about 4 months and it works great! I have Windows ME and it has not given me any problems. The top loading feature is great- no loading trays to get broken or stuck. I burn about 3-5 CDs a day and it does not take that much time. USB is so easy to use- I would not fool around with SCSI or firewire. The 4x writing speed is NOT that slow. Increasing the writing speed shaves off a couple of minutes in the burning time- not really worth the hassel of the extra wires, hubs, or money. I turned off the test function in writing the CD in MusicMatch and after that I have had not problems. I have used the cheapest to the best CD-Rs with no problems. This was an excellent investment!

Summary: Unreliable
Review: Before purchasing this CD burner, I had an older one that I used to use. Fairly reliable but was outdated technology and incredibly bulky. So, I decided to go with the Iomega Predator.

Well, I hate to say it but my old CD burner blows this thing away. This Iomega is quite unreliable. I haven't been able to burn a CD yet (after 10 tries and plenty of coasters around the house). I wouldn't say I'm an expert in CD burners but I'm definitely not new to the scene. So, I'm pretty confident it wasn't my lack of knowledge that was causing me grief.

The buffer underrun problems on this thing are horrendous. I've tried burning at 4X from CD-ROM, 4X from Hard Disk, 2X from CD-ROM, and 2X from Hard Disk - all failed. I tried downloading and using other burning software such as CloneCD..no luck. I tried different types of CD-R's but still wouldn't work. I've researched on the web, their tech support site and spoke to a live tech support person. I did everything that was recommended - defragmenting the hard drive, closing all apps, closing the virus software..tried it all but kept on creating coasters.

80% of my errors were buffer underruns while the other 20% were other miscellaneous errors. My machine is pretty reliable too...256 Megs of RAM, 11 Gig Hard drive (with 2 Gigs free), etc.

Plus, most of the time I put in a blank CD, it would tell me that I need a blank CD in there! I'd open the case, take out the CD and put it in again, and it would still give me that error. Very tempermental. That issue may be due to my specific burner, who knows.

In summary, I'd pass on this one if I were you. Sure, you're getting it at an inexpensive price, it looks slick and it's very compact. But, remember the purpose of your purchasing this - to burn CD's!

I'd recommend spending a little more money and getting a Plextor or a comparable brand that has the BURN-Proof technology. BURN-proof is a new feature in more advanced burners that prevents the dreaded buffer underrun problems. A little pricier but you'll appreciate it in the end.

Summary: Do not buy this product if you use Windows ME.
Review: This device is not compatible with Windows ME. Iomega will not tell you this. They will have you waste a lot of time updating your BIOS but that won't make any difference. Trust me, go with something else. Don't waste several hours trying to install a mediocre product.

Summary: A pretty good burner
Review: I bought this burner for my new HP notebook, primarily for burning audio CDs. I found that using the "CD Copier" option was a better choice for that because using the burner to scan/read the orignal and then to burn the blank overheated it, causing more disc errors. The "CD Copier" uses the CD-ROM in your pc to read the orignal CD you're burning, and then uses the burner to burn the blank.

I tried upgrading the software that it came with (Easy CD Creator), but I found that it was more trouble than it was worth. It requires that you remove all previous editions of CD creator, which sometimes takes the Iomega's drivers with it. And when you try to re-install the drivers, it also re-installs the previous version of the software, which then requires you to remove the upgraded version that you just installed. grrr.

All in all, it's a pretty good burner. Just make sure that it's on a flat hard surface that's stable (a slight knock on it and it reports a disc error) and if you intend to use it heavily, give it breaks every so often to cool down (or else you get disc errors).

Summary: Terrible, harmful even...
Review: This drive is terrible- stay away... It burned one usable cd- the first, then never again after teasing me with one good burn. I run Win2k, and I got the infamous blue screen of death with the adaptec (roxio) apps it shipped with. It is completely unreliable and seems to be burning fine until the very very very last minute when the lid pops open and the computer tells me the was an error in the device. On top of which, the spindle is too hot to touch, even when the drive is OFF! Design flaw? Can't be good for the sensitive electronic inside (they put heatsinks and coolers on cpu's and videocards for a reason...) I also tried it on my Windows 98 laptop, and the Iomega install apps always had error messages coming up, and I had to install the drivers for it separately... This thing is nothing but trouble. Looks cool though.

Summary: Not ready for consumption
Review: I got one of those, together with Easy CD Create 4.02, and it does not work right. I am an experienced user, and I strongly believe that the software has a ton of problems. My impression is that Iomega tech support knows that they are selling something that does not work right, but as the software comes from Roxy, they are unable to help. Iomega used to be a great brand, in fact the best in the field. Too bad.

Summary: Very Sensitive and Tempramental
Review: Very sensitive and tempramental external drive. NEVER EVER use this drive with Memorex CD-Rs for either data or audio, they just won't work. Works better (80%) with higher-end Sony CD-Rs, though.

My unit has an unusual problem, it will burn one CD just fine, then any subsequent CDs reject with "Laser Calibration Error", which can only be resolved by rebooting. Not sure if this situation is unique to this unit.

Also, do NOT use this USB machine in a USB hub, it demands to be plugged directly into the USB port on your machine.

Driver does not appear to communicate well with bundled Adaptec CD Creator software.

Significant buffer underruns with this machine. No "burnproof" technology here.

Will NOT work with plain Windows 98, requires Windows 98 SE.

When the planets are in alignment, and all is right in the world, this machine creates CD very quickly...so far, for me thats about 10% of the time. About 15 discarded CD-Rs in the trash right now.

At least this version works part of the time...I originally bought the firewire version which didn't work at all!

You will NOT be able to register this machine with IOMEGA, it rejected both serial numbers on the two machines I had as "invalid".

Good luck navigating the endless loop of a website that IOMEGA uses for tech support.

Overall, not recommended. Would not buy this unit again. Very disappointing.

Summary: Pretty good burner
Review: I just got my burner today. my system is a laptop running k6-2 450 128M ram. after 20 mintues to unpack, assemble and installing the software, i managed to burn one CD of MP3s using 2x speed. the entire process took 30 minutes but no coaster. the software is easy to use and the unit is not difficult to assemble. my background is in electrical engineering maybe that helped a little but i would suppose anyone which a fair amount of computer usage would have no problems with it. that is so much for the operation.

why the four not five stars? the cover seem somewhat fragile as compare with my sony portable audio CD player, a more robust contruction would be better.
