Summary: Worst electronic I have seen in years
Review: While not a computer expert I have been involved with PC's since the Commadore 64. I have installed hard drives, memory, scanners, read only CD's. in several systems. Software installation was a piece of cake but when it came to writting a CD it was a gigantic PITA. Data underrun errors nearly everytime. I tried to write ~200 MB to a disk and it would hang up with no error message. Would have to cold boot. I managed to ruin 5 RW disks and got 1 disk to write after hrs. of rebooting. I sent this lemon back after two days of fustration. Would not recommend to anyone. Running Win 98 with 64MB.

Summary: a very fickle little beast
Review: I wasn't originally going to buy this product. I have a Toshiba notebook, very reliable, itself, but it doesn't have a built in cd-rw drive, so I figured I'd bite the bullet and go out and get one, since my hard drive was practically full due to many many mp3 downloads. Anyway, I was less than enthousiastic about this product, having read some bad reviews, but when I go to the store, the little thing seemed like a reasonable risk to take, it was the cheapest small-sized external with a usb port, and the pushy salesman pushed it heavily, so I bought it (on the condition that if I wasn't satisfied I could exchange it for a diferent item). At home, handsome Predator installed, I made many (unsuccesful) attemps to make an audio cd, and it just wouldn't-usually stopping halfway through. I tried everything, but no luck, so I returned the thing the next day and bought instead a Freecom Traveller II, 8x4x24, pcmcia, which I highly recommend to anyone. It's a gem-reliable and twice as fast! Plus it comes with three plugs (UK, Europe & USA) ! It's apparently the best option out there for us portable minded folks until the usb2 comes out...

Summary: Sleek Design, Compact and Works Great
Review: I bought the Predator a couple of weeks ago and did a lot of research on CD burners. I am very impressed with my choice.

The IOMega Predator is an excellent value for the price you are paying. I paid a lot more for this when I bought it 3 months earlier. Amazon has a very reasonable price on it and I think it's a very good buy with the rebate. It has a wonderful design. Im using it with my Gateway Solo 5300 laptop and I think it has a pretty decent speed when I use it to burn audio cds.

So far I have not even had one cd that has not burned right. Its swift, efficient, makes no sound when it's burning and looks like a sleek DiscMan. It connects to your PC through the USB port. So make sure your computer has a USB port before you get it. The speeds are 4X4X6. But I believe with a firewire it reacher faster speeds.

The good thing about getting an IOMega over the others is because IOMega is a good brand and they have excellent customer service. So at anytime if there's a problem you can call technical support and they'll walk you through solving the problem. I would recommend this over any other CD burner simple because it's small, compact, attractive and efficient....and now cheap....what more cud u ask for ???

You can burn CDs of your favorite music, video, photos, and and back up you data. The Iomega CD-RW Predator USB drive records, re-writes and reads up to 700MB of data or 80 minutes of audio. Drive speed is 4x4x6.

However before buying it would be a wise idea to check on its minimum requirements:

Summary: Temperamental Drive
Review: I have no previous experience with any other CD-RW outboard drive but this one is very temperamental. It does not like being plugged into an outboard USB hub. It only works when I give it the one onboard USB port on my laptop (and actually works well). All my other USB devices don't have any problem sharing but this drive is selfish. The success rate in creating CD's is low and the frequent error messages are not real helpful in diagnosing and resolving the problem. Will often get to the point where the only option is to reboot and hope that the drive wakes itself up. If you can dedicate an onboard USB port to it you may have success but if you need to plug it into a hub you might consider some other drive.

Summary: Looks are deceiving!
Review: Yes it looks very nice and it's somewhat compact. It was a big mistake to buy this product, which I eventually returned, because my system would not detect the drive. Even after I removed all the software and re-installed it. It still did not work.

I proceeded to purchase the HP conterpart of this product. It brings a seperate device driver disk, which the Predator doesn't. I then have an option to install the burning software that comes with the drive or you can install your own. The Predator software is all bundeled in the same install, which could be it's downfall. The biggest thing that I noticed was that when the system first sees a new USB device, and it's looking for drivers and you point it to the CD it does not see any drivers on that CD. Only after you install the whole software bundle will you see a drive letter assigned to your drive. But that's as far as I got. Then I restarted the computer and that drive never came back. It was like the device wasn't attached to my computer. It might work for you, It just didn't work for me on a newlly, fresh installed operating system (Windows 98 SE). My money is on the HP CD-RW internal or external drives, which are far superior from the rest. I love the Zip drives, but the Predator just doesn't cut it.

Summary: I have to retract my last review.
Review: This device does work with ME. It shipped with version 2.0 of Iomega's software. You will need to have them send you version 2.8. 2.8 contains the drivers for ZipCD but they work fine with the predator.

Summary: Toshiba users beware...
Review: After reading some of the glowing reviews, I feel a little awkward being critical; however, the Predator has been less than useful with my Toshiba 4100XDVD notebook. I feel like the Coaster King, cranking them out like hamburgers at McDonalds. I'm running the latest drivers and I'm also using Roxio's (Adaptec) Platinum version 5.01 software to TRY and burn my CDs. But I'm still getting about a 50% burn rate at best. CDs are cheap but my time isn't. So, when the burner burps at the end of a half-hour, I get to restart the whole process and keep stacking my coasters higher.

I should have known better. My friends were warning me not to buy any Iomega CD-RWs but when I read that it was the Editor's Choice at PC Magazine, I figured they couldn't be wrong (I'll read their stuff with a grain of salt from now on). Perhaps this burner was designed with the Mac user in mind but it definitely conflicts with my Toshiba notebook.

Hope this helps.

Summary: Step Away from the Sales Rack!!!!
Review: I've tried several burns and never got a CD. It's error messge after error message. I had to install the driver's from the web page, the instructions on the CD that came with it refused to open, it constantly tells me I dont' have a blank CD in the writer and I'll open another new CD-R and put it in the writer just to get the same message. I'm on my way to return it right now. DO NOT buy this product unless you like being frustrated.

Summary: I love this burner
Review: I was a little nervous about buying this cd writer because it looked so cool, and I had such a lousy experiance with the last one I bought from a different company. I am glad to say that this is a pretty good burner... It worked a lot better than the last one did and it was definately worth the money. Do not buy any of the HP burners.. you will be glad you didn't.
