Summary: Manual could be a little better, hope it lives up to name
Review: I got my Gateway in January 1999 with a Mitsumi CD-ROM drive, that drive lasted until early 2003. My next drive was a Creative - it was supposed to be new (I thought so anyway) but lasted until just after the warranty ran out this year. Feeling very disgusted I did some looking around and found this Sony here at Amazon for just a few $ more than some no name (to me)drives and decided to buy it.
When I got the thing I opened the box and thought it looked pretty good but noticed that the manual was lacking a few details. There is one bit about the warranty being voided if you use damaged or poor quality discs (repeated in a sticker on drive drawer)- but no trace of a warranty anywhere in the box or manual. The manual also refers to a system users guide and manual in the installation instructions, I didn't get such things & am positive I never had them.
I was suprised to learn that 52X is a misnomer- the default speed is only 40X and while Sony tells how to temporarily bump up the speed they adivse against it.
Installation itself wasn't so bad, if you know just a little bit more than I do about the work, the manual is pretty straight forward about what/ when to do things. In the few times I've used it so far I've had no problems.
I paid extra for the name Sony, hope it lives up to the reputation I feel it has.
