Summary: Reliable and Quick! It's a Sony!
Review: I just put this into my pc a few days ago and have had nothing but strong performance out of this unit. It replaced a PDC/Yamaha 8x8x24 drive that couldn't get it's act together with "XP" but then what can? Anyway the unit is a breeze to install and the instructions reasonable. I have burned many files in the last couple of days with this and Roxio Platinum 5 with "XP" updates and the Direct CD functions flawlessly, which is more than can be said for the Yamaha which caused numerous lockups with Direct CD in "XP". The skinny on this is that if you must have a memory stick input this is the drive, if not spend a few $$ less and get the CRX175AA1 w/out memory stick. The instructions will lead you believe you can have your cake and eat it too! In this case if you have (2) hard drives off of your primary IDE and this drive is coupled with a standard generic cd-rom you will not get memory stick access. The only way is to assign it it's own IDE (secondary)channel and not to daisy chain it to another CD-Rom. This is because the memory stick input must be seen as a logical "removable" drive letter of which only two simultaniously can be seen by the secondary IDE channel not three. I hope this has been inciteful if not lengthy, it appears to be a great drive, now I will put it through it's paces! Enjoy....and God Bless America!!!!!!!

Summary: WARNING!!!! DO NOT BUY THIS DRIVE IF>>>>>>>
Review: WARNING!

THE MANUFACTURER OF THIS DRIVE DOES NOT TELL YOU THE FOLLOWING:

If you want to use this drive, you will not be able to use your regular CD-Rom. This is because of the limitation of 4 IDE channels on most motherboards.

If you choose to use the memory stick feature in this drive, you must connect the drive to your secondary IDE channel, and set the devise to master. Then, you cannot attach any other devices to the slave port on the secondary channel. This is because the memory stick reader is actually recognized as a drive, and uses one channel!!!!!

So, this device actually uses the master and the slave settings on the secondary IDE channel.

There is no workaround if your other IDE channels are being occupied, by say, two hard drives.

The only known workaround is if you have a newer motherboard with up to 8 IDE channels.

BUYER BEWARE- SONY DOES NOT TELL YOU THIS WHEN YOU BUY THE DRIVE!!!

Only buy this drive if you have one hard drive or don't want to have more than one CDROM/RW drive.

I was so disappointed to find out that this drive's cool Memory Stick feature would not be able to be utilized in my almost brand spanking new AMD 1.3 Gig machine.

Skip the Memory Stick Drive, and get your self something cheaper that works as it says it will.

Good luck :)
