Summary: Excellent DVD+RW Drive
Review: I just got this drive about two weeks ago. I upgraded from the HP DVD200i and it's been a great experience. I can write a 4.7GB DVD+RW disk full of pictures, video and other data in just about 15 minutes, that's like writing to 7 CD-RW disks in the same amount of time without having to switch the disk in the drive!

At this point I haven't used the 8X disk that came with the drive since it is a DVD+R and not a DVD+RW (I bought the drive for backing up files and use it to rewrite to +RW disks). Also, HP does not have the 8X disks for sale at this point (January 2004) yet an 8X disk came with the drive.

At less than $200 this drive is a great buy in my opinion. It has been very reliable it hasn't made any errors in the writing process and it comes with a nice software package that makes watching DVDs, editing movies and storing data very easy and fast. Another good thing, at least for me, is that the +R/+RW format disks play on my regular DVD player and my older DVD player which I bought before people were worrying about the +R/-R DVD format war. Overall this product has good quality and value and it comes with a 1 year warrantee as well.

Summary: Nothing Better for the Bucks!
Review: I just purchased this and everything is exactly like HP said it was. Installation took all of 20 minutes and I was up and running. The write speed is fast and it's fun to play with and back up picture files and doing my own DVD's. Also Amazon.com had the very best price and most place's don't have them in stock and were back ordered. This is my first purchse with Amazon but it WILL NOT be my last! Thanks..

Summary: Not up to HP standards by any means
Review: The drive died after 3 months (no longer recognizes blank CD or DVD media and will not read a DVD disk that was burned on that drive), When the drive did work it took at least 50 minutes to burn a full DVD. Also the CD burning function was slow, much slower than my HP9310i drive. Full CD took about 15 minutes where the 9310 does it in about 7. I would not recommend this drive to anyone at this point

Summary: Slowest DVD Burner known to man!!! Don't be fooled by the 8x
Review: This burner takes a full hour to burn a dvd at 4x. It took me an hour and a half to burn the 8x dvd that came with the drive. I have tried many different types of dvd media and all have been unsuccessful. I've tried the burner on 3 different computers even upgraded the firmware and still takes forever to burn a dvd. It may just be a bad drive but the store won't take it back and HP won't exchange it under the manufacturer warranty so I'm screwed out of $200. THANKS HP AND BEST BUY!

Summary: wheres the factory test?
Review: You would think that a well known successful company such as HP would test there products pass standards before selling them. They forgot to do that with this particular dvd writer. It simply doesn't recognize any disc and it's likely a missed hardware malfuntion. Yes I did troubleshoot, until I won an award and was proposed local work for the Sheriff. I got six months out of it and now it's only use is contributing to the unique junk stack on my bookshelf. Yes it will die, No do not buy. It is your choice, you've heard my voice. This poem is gay, please have a good day.
