Summary: excellent value
Review: ok it's clunky looking by "modern" standards, but the audio is excellent and AM-DX reception is amazing.

i like radios with analog controls, and despite the miscablibration of the dial, having an dial and scale makes hunting down weak stations easier.

Summary: Very Good Distant AM reception
Review: A very good radio with a tough case. Good for use around the shop or yard. Very good distant AM reception-but not as good as the CC Radio. I put them side by side to test my CC Radio Christmas present, the CC Radio has superior AM reception. Of course the price of the Superadio is a steal. Thats why I have two. Has a built in AC power cord and battery life is great too!

Summary: Great long-distance daytime AM Radio, great audio
Review: Very sensitive radio on AM, widely considered the best buy for the money by far. Very popular in prisons because of its daytime distance performance.

Sound is top rate.

Dial calibration is poor but you can get used to it.

It's exactly as sensitive as the CCRadio at $160 with much better sound than the CCRadio. Lacks only the CCRadio's digital tuning. Sorry, Art Bell.

Summary: Lop off two stars for build quality
Review: The Superadio lives up to the reputation it has for AM sensitivity so I will not repeat it here. It is a joy to listen to.

However the radio case and knobs are made of the cheapest possible material. The entire set looks like it was made in a bargain-basement Chinese factory. Handle it roughly and I suspect it will fall apart.

I wish that the manufacturer would have a better cabinet and build quality. Would not mind paying more for better quality!

Summary: Bring AM radio to life for much less money!
Review: I will attempt to review the GE 7-2887 Superadio III Portable AM/FM Radio below. I will focus on these categories: AM reception/performance, FM reception/performance, quality and price vs. overall value.

First before I begin the review here is some information about me. I am an avid fan of AM radio. I have several favorite stations from as many as 250 miles away to as few as 5 miles away. I listen to AM talk almost all the time when listening to radio. I also listen at all times of day. I also live in a deep valley and have a very hard time getting any decent radio signal. I own several radios, which are a clock radio, a Magnavox home stereo, an antique handheld Panasonic transistor radio (model R-1052), the Sony ICF-SW7600GR shortwave radio and the GE Superadio III.

AM Reception/Performance-
This radio has fantastic reception on the AM band. Far better than my other radios! The stations come in clear and strong. Stations are easy to dial in for maximum signal. The nearly 8-inch ferrite antenna is why; this radio is truly deigned for AM reception.

FM Reception/Performance-
I have had no trouble getting many different FM stations on this radio. The whip antenna is very adequate and I am very satisfied with my ability to receive FM radio signals. This radio does out perform my other radios here as well.

Quality-
I am satisfied with the quality of this radio. It is a large radio and heavy. The casing feels strong and the metal speaker grill is a big plus.

The volume, bass and treble knobs do feel slightly cheap. I can hold the knob and flex it up and down some. Not very much but I do think that if this radio did fall and somehow land on the knob the wrong way it could break. However with proper handling and care I do not see any problem with the knobs. They do turn very smoothly and feel good; they also have a very sensitive adjustment that is great for really dialing in that perfect sound!

The speakers are of great quality and in my opinion one of this radios features that make this radio such a wonderful radio. The six-inch woofer and two-inch tweeter bring this radio to life! This portable radio sounds almost as full and as dynamic as my home stereo system. Now remember that this is a portable radio with two front firing speakers. It will not compete with a home stereo that has two separate speaker cabinets. However this is one of the best sounding portable radios I have ever had the pleasure to listen too. This radio is capable of very loud volumes. I like to listen at setting 1 (0 min-10 max) when the radio is sitting next to me. The audio quality of this radio due to it's large woofer and tweeter make this radio second to none to any of my other portable radios that I own or have listened too.

The tuner on this radio is smooth and sensitive to movement so dialing in on weak signals is easy. The numbers on the dial are inaccurate (as are almost all non digital radios), but on my radio not by a whole lot. I have had no problem adjusting to the offset.

The on/off button is on top of the radio, it is the only button on the top of the radio so finding it in the dark is easy! The other buttons and knobs are laid out in a very logical way and are very accessible in the dark so listening before bed is easy. That for me is a big plus! The radios handle is also very strong and I feel very safe using it to carry the radio.

Price vs. Overall Value-
For the price I paid with Amazon ($35.94) this radio is worth every penny! I highly recommend this radio to anyone who wants to bring AM radio to life. Hear what is really out there. Make AM radio a pleasure to listen too. This is the best radio in this price range by far and competes with radios 3-4 times its price, that says a lot. If you are looking for a much better radio at a reasonable price this radio is a must buy! This is the only radio I use anymore. While it may not have all the extras of many other radios this radio was designed to do just one thing, that is to deliver the best AM/FM radio experience and it does that wonderfully! A must have for any AM radio fan!

Summary: Cheap and looks it
Review: I own this one. Well, it's cheap and it pulls in some stations that others don't, but it's nothing exceptional. If you buy it, expect the worst build quality you've ever seen. Feels and looks like the cheapest crap imaginable. Spend a little more money and get a decent radio like a Kaito 1102 or a Sangean.

Summary: The Standard
Review: Most radios you can buy have pretty cabinets, nice paint, and will sound pretty good if you're tuned to a station whose radio beams are about strong enough to cook an egg. They're designed to impress you in the big box store, where looks and the sound of the most powerful station in town are all you have to go on. It isn't until you get them home that you find out how miserable they are in real-world performance, trying to pick up that weak station that's the only one carrying the game you want to hear.

The GE Superadio is a whole 'nother deal.

It's just an AM-FM radio, aggressively avoiding any other features whatsoever. But it's the gold standard of the type. When a radio geek wants to say whether some other set is good on FM and, especially, AM, s/he will compare it to the Superadio.

To give you an idea how good it is; I live in a semi-remote area without any really strong AM stations. Sitting side by side on my couch, a typical 'personal stereo' type radio picks up one AM station. A cheap transistor radio picks up three. The Superadio picks up 37.

I recommend my friends get these as part of their blackout kits. For one thing, it will run about two hours less than forever on its six D-cells. For another, this set can pull in AM stations at least two, three hundred miles away, in daylight, any time. If your blackout extends farther than this radio's range, you've got more important things to worry about.

Incidently, it runs off AC also. It switches to AC automatically when you plug it in, switches back to batteries automatically if AC isn't available.

Sound quality is excellent. It's mono, but it has a good and large speaker and enough audio power to drive it properly. It also has separate treble and bass controls.

I give it four stars instead of five for three reasons:

1. Some of them don't work. The first one I bought didn't.

2. Stations are hard for me to tune toward the upper end of the AM band. They're packed very tightly together there, and getting from one to another nearby is fiddly.

3. The "wide" bandwidth is useless to me. There is no radio signal in my area strong enough for it. I have to use the narrow setting, intended for weak and distant stations, for everything.

Still, it's a heck of a radio for remote areas, for camping trips, or if you want to know how well a radio can work if somebody at the company gives a darn.

Summary: Great reception
Review: Within a couple of hours after plugging this radio in and without an external antenna, I was able to hear and identify five AM stations that were each over 500 miles away (1 in Salt Lake City, 505 miles; 1 in Denver, 577 miles; 2 in San Francisco, 666 miles; and 1 in San Antonio, 831 miles. I'm in Mesa, AZ, and this was in the evening.).

One station that has always been problematic for me (KBAQ 89.5 FM transmitting from the other side of Phoenix) came in loud and almost perfectly clear.

The narrow/wide band switch for AM is useful for receiving those hard-to-tune stations (narrow) and getting extra fidelity from closer stations (wide).

At $40, it's hard to go wrong with this radio. The next step up would be a shortwave radio like the Grundig S350 ($100) or the Sangean CCRadio Plus ($150).

Summary: Bigger than I expected, and great AM reception
Review: This baby is about the size of a couple of laptops stacked and turned on edge. It's hard to miss almost anywhere you put it, and probably too big to look OK on your desk.

But the sound is huge and there is much less AM buzzing (pretty much none!)than I've experienced with the half-dozen other radios I've tried in my house over the years.

I listen to just two AM stations, so tuning has not been a problem for me.

The Superadio has a plug coiled out of the way in the battery compartment, so you have it if you need it. And since this is no Walkman, you may find yourself able to plug it in more often than you might expect.
