Summary: A Classic Retro Design That Really Works
Review: I'd done my research on the Superadio III before buying, and Amazon's price was the best to be found. I got the radio around the time of my birthday, and what a gift! I knew the radio was supposed to have outstanding AM reception, and it does -- stations as far away as San Francisco (260 miles away) come in clearly during the daytime, and at night, it picks up stations from all over the country. A certain station I like in Los Angeles, about 250 miles away but over some tall mountains, comes in, but will probably take an external antenna for prime reception -- nonetheless, this is the best radio for long-distance reception I have used. So the Superadio lives up to its advance notices, but also, its classic design -- retro by necessity, to keep the price down -- appeals to me, reminding me of the portable radios available when I was a kid, i.e., not so many bells and whistles, just good looks (other than the chintzy silver slide switches) and solid sound. The bass and treble controls coupled with the two-way speaker system really let you tailor the sound on both AM and FM to suit your taste and cut down distant-station background noise. Overall tone quality is very pleasing. Okay, so the slide-rule tuning isn't always pinpoint accurate; it's plenty good enough for general use. This radio is a big unit, designed to be a sensitive, good-sounding piece of equipment -- it is, and it's worth the money you'll pay and more. (Incidentally, I ordered it with free shipping, and was initially charged for shipping; I emailed Amazon Customer Service about this, and was immediately and politely advised that the charges would be credited back to me, and they were!) All in all, a great buy from a great source.

Summary: Excellence in AM Radio
Review: There is no other better radio Ive seen bar none !. I have portable shortwaves/AM {Grundig+ Sangean} They do not compare to the sound quality of this GE. This radio also out performs my other $400 portable on the AM band. Ive also tryied the C Crane radio {over $100} and its digital and had heavy current drain so figure on a set of batteries a week for most digitals. This GE radio goes strong as it is non digital. If AM band talk show listening is your forte THIS IS YOUR RADIO ! The sound on this GE takes you back to the daysof the 30/40,s era where great sounding radios were at their prime. You cant go wrong on this excellent AM radio. DX stations all over the US are easy to pull in with this GE. By the way Im 70+ and Ive seen good radios. This is one indeed, and with the external antenna hookup on radio of which I use finding lond distance stations are endless Figure on about 25hrs listening time with a digital display radio with clock and memorys. This GE has been playing over 2 1/2 weeks for 6 hrs a day and still going strong on its 6 D size battery pack

Summary: AM Stations from tuner-stop to tuner-stop (in the daytime!)
Review: Here in the mountains of Western NC, you're lucky to pick up 2 or 3 audible AM stations on a "standard portable" during daylight hours. I ordered the SRIII thinking it would improve matters somewhat. Little did I know that what I'd be getting would pick up a solid 39 stations from 530KC to 1710KC! In the daytime! I can pick up WBT-AM 1110KC (and about 85 miles away) in the daytime with a local station (only 2 miles away) broadcasting on 1130KC. That's virtually impossible with a standard radio. If this unit has one minor flaw, it's that the dial is off on AM by about 30KC. That's a minor annoyance compared to the sensitivity and selectivity of this radio!

Summary: Astounding AM reception
Review: If you love AM radio and are looking for a radio that has fantastic reception your choice comes down to two radios: the ccradio plus and the GE Superadio. These are the best radios on the market for fans of talk, sports, Art Bell, Phil Hendrie, etc. Which one should you buy? I have both (the GE for my office, ccradio for home) so here is my take on the two. Both have nearly equal AM reception. At night, you can easily pull in stations from hundreds of miles away (some say even over a thousand miles away but this depends on where you live). There the difference ends. The ccradio has a lot of features that I felt I wanted in a radio. It has a sleep timer, accurate digital tuning, automatic timer that turns your favorite show on at a predetermined time, scan buttons, lighted dial, power cord (not bulky adaptor), weather radio (with auto alert), memory buttons, tv audio of the network stations. The only flaw is that it has a grab indentation rather than a full handle. They are a family business and take GOOD care of their customers. The ccradio company LOVES radio and loves people who share their passion. Is it worth the [$$] for the extras? To me it is. The Ge Superadio has a rotary - and inaccurate - tuning dial. This will drive you crazy if you do a lot of channel switching. Some people tape graph paper to the radio and mark where they found the stations - it is that inaccurate. There is no timer, no alarm, no weather, no tv audio, no lit dial, etc. The sound is better on the GE Superadio, though. The GE SUperadio feels cheaply made and probably won't make it through many beach or camping excursions. The GE Superadio is enormously sized - it is the size of a small attache case or TV! If you only want to pull in one distant station and keep your dial set to that station, get the GE radio. That is all you need. It has great, almost legendary, reception without any bells or whistles. On the other hand, if you love radio, need the extras, change stations a lot, want something sturdily built that will last a lifetime, want to explore the large number of AM stations that are out there, go out and order the ccradio with slightly better reception (see their website to order). I am a radio person rather than a tv person. I have radio playing all day (as some people have tv going on all day). I sleep to radio (and need that sleep timer). I would rather listen to a talk show than watch a sit com. I would rather listen to Coast to coast, Phil Hendrie, and Rush than watch another rerun of Frasier or Friends. If you are like me, do yourself a favor and invest in the ccradio. You won't regret it. P.S., the FM reception will be better than you are used to, also.
Bottom line: The GE superadio is low cost with no extras and big and bulky. The CCradio plus is expensive, has every extra you could want (except a decent handle), more sensitive but does nto sound as good as the GE for music.

Review: I'm impressed by this radio. I performed research before I purchased it and it came down to this and the CCRadio Plus. The price difference ... conivinced me to go with the Superadio III. The CCRadio had a bunch of extras I probably wouldn't ever use. If you're looking for looks and additional features you might want to get the CCRadio. I think the CCRadio is a bit smaller and looks more high tech. But if you're just looking for great AM reception, simplicity, and a decent price, go with the Superadio III.The AM reception on this radio is very strong and the sensitivity is excellent. Don't use the FM much, so I'll leave that review to someone else. I use it for AM, and it does that extremely well. I pick up Nashville very clearly at night here in Louisiana. The only feature I'm not impressed by is the wide band feature; it doesn't really boost the strong signals that much in my opinion. I think the radio on the normal setting does a good job. Otherwise, though, this is a great radio for the price. I can pick up stations pretty clearly on this radio that my stereo receiver won't even receive. If you enjoy listening to AM radio at night, this is probably the radio for you.

Review: I own 3 of these as good general radios. It has a fault that shows up if you try to use it for earphone listening. There is a constant low-level hum that is obvious when you turn the volume down.

Summary: Retro Design and Quality in a Portable Radio
Review: The Superadio III has quickly become a favorite, both sentimentally and on its merits. I easily and regularly receive stations from 250 - 300 miles north of my home, and (with a little more difficulty due to mountains) from the same distance south. The radio outperforms any other I have owned, and its simplicity of design and tone quality are definitely "retro" in this age. It works like the old ones, and even looks like them! Tone quality of clear AM stations is close to FM quality on some other radios. Some difficulty with accuracy on the slide-rule dial--big deal--if you know the station you're seeking and those near it, you'll find it. A great buy if you want or need superior performance in a portable am/fm radio.

Summary: A hands-down best buy!
Review: I had heard good words about this radio, but just didn't believe that a quality radio could cost so little.... Note that this is a large, bulky radio that takes "D" sized batteries. But - the fidelity on both music and voice is excellent (large speaker and treble/bass controls). Very good FM sensitivity - I don't have to raise the telescoping antenna to listen to the nearest public radio station, 50 miles away. Battery life has been excellent. The radio has screw terminals for external AM and FM antennas, so this could be a good radio to use at work with an external remote antenna taped to an outside window (and it has a headphone jack). My only complaint was that the dial pointer was quite a bit off on the radio I received. That was quickly fixed by disassembling the case and moving the pointer on the dial string. If you get one of these radios, have that problem, and can't fix it yourself, find a friend who can or send it back for another. If you insist on a digital dial (battery eater), then look elsewhere. Otherwise, I doubt that you'll find a better portable radio at any price.

Review: I've heard the GE Super Radio is great, but I tried to order it today (May 25, 2004)from Amazon and shipping will not be until June 29-July 12. Way too long to wait! Too bad!

Summary: difficult to tune
Review: the numbers do not line up with the actual stations. There is a large variation and it makes it difficult to find stations. The sound is great and it does pull in stations difficult to receive. You have to make notes and wait until a station identifies itself to see if you have the station you are seeking. Other than this flaw it is a great radio and I would reccommend it. I actually bought it after they took Howard Stern off the market is South Florida. He is on in Ft. Myers on an F.M. station 100 miles away but unfortunately it does not reach that far.
