Rating: Summary: Handy hints to save you from returning this gadget Review: I just unboxed this CPen about an hour and half ago, and I've come up with a few suggestions to save the rest of you from frustration. None of my suggestions are explicit in the owner's manual, but I've now mastered the pen by keeping a couple of the following hints in mind...First off, hold the pen at about a 75 degree angle from the scanned text. Originally, I assumed the pen would work best at a perfect 90 degree angle, but it doesn't. I suppose my suggestion is similar to that of others that have suggested setting the pen in left hand mode. I also found that if you do not hold the pen at the 75 degree angle, the light tends to go off right after you start scanning (which means you are no longer scanning). Next, depress the trigger at the beginning of the line, on the first letter to be scanned, as you quickly scan across the text. I originally thought that dragging the pen across the text more slowly would give the pen more of an opportunity to scan, but the opposite appears to be true. A quick drag across the line of text works best. Remember to keep the pen in contact with the paper and not above it... In the end, the pen requires a bit of practice, even with these suggestions, but I hope that these hints will speed the process along. I can already see how many ways this pen will help me in my everyday life, and I would surely recommend it.
Rating: Summary: Good product, would be better with customer service Review: I like the product. It's easy to use, and well thought out. For me, the accuracy is very good. In a paragraph, I might get several errors, but it's much easier than typing. Also, as I use it, it seems that my accuracy improves. And the current price is very attractive. My only complaint is with customer service. I sent them a question -- a fairly simple and straightforward question -- and never heard back from them. Were there any customer service for this product, I would rate it 4 stars.
Rating: Summary: Amazing! Review: I read only a few lines from the instruction book before I began to fiddle with this pen scanner. In just a couple of minutes I had successfully scanned a line of text. It did misread a numerical bullet point and the first capital letter. My next two attempts were flawless. The battery holder confused me. Look carefully at the stamped images showing battery polarity, or you will get one of them backwards as I did. Also, I assumed the pen had only one sensor that also doubles as the infra-red port. Wrong! Be sure to turn the pen's back end with the wheel control toward other infra-red devices when beaming. It also connects to a computer by wire with special software loaded on the computer, if desired. The edit and selection menus are very intuitive and easy to use. It is easy to skip a line of text when scanning. Also, the pen sometimes shuts off when in use. I hold the pen so a few rays of red light shine out onto the page to let me know it is still scanning. It is also easy to start scanning mid-line if the pen does shut off. Editing is probably easier on a handheld or a computer than on the C-pen. Still, it is a great little helper.
Rating: Summary: Cool gadget Review: I really like this pen. I am a college student and find it useful to alleviate highlighting and marking in text books. All key info is easily stored and reviewed for tests.
The software that comes with the pen is not Mac compat. and I find it to be really buggy in windows. Terrible software.
Battery life is pretty good. And pen works very well. I can really capture what I want with ease - it is pretty accurate too.
Not very cool looking design, but people do stare and wonder what in the world I am doing when I use it. I have found increased efficiency with the pen. I have owned it for two months.
Rating: Summary: Great scanner for the money... Review: I'd like it better if it handled scanning handwriting better... but, it works wonderfully for my husband's needs (the person it was bought for). He uses it to scan names and such off of forms he is handed by customers relating to products to be handled for them. From there, he is trying to get it where he can send the data from the cpen to his handheld pc. But, in the meantime, has no trouble sending it to his laptop and desktop computers. It is decently accurate, and allows editing to be done while the data is still in the cpen.
Rating: Summary: Cool product, but can be improved Review: I'm pretty impressed by its recognition rate. However, there's one small inconvenience. While the size of scanner window can accommodate about three lines of printed text, only one line is scanned each time. I wonder why the manufacturer didn't design it to handle multiple lines for each scan. This will greatly save scanning time and muscle strain. :)
Rating: Summary: serious incompatibilities Review: If you own a Toshiba notebook, DO NOT buy this product. It will crash every time you try to use it. I phoned the C-PEN support line and there is an incompatibility with the Toshiba drivers and C-PEN seems to be in no hurry to solve the problem.
Rating: Summary: C PEN 600c is Better Review: If you want a handheld scaanner like this better go for C PEN 600c than the wizcom tech models and other lower models of CPEN. It makes very less errors, but is a kind of slow, if you scan fast it takes long time for recognition. Otherwise its a good choise.
Rating: Summary: Cheesy product! Review: My C Pen lasted one day (LED optical unit failed)! Called technical support in Georgia- No technical support! (had to leave phone number for call back). Drivers are not really compatible with Windows NT. When C Pen goes into sleep mode, NT becomes confused and tries to resurrect a standard modem driver in place. In order to overcome problem must re-boot system. OCR reading quality really poor (estimate about 70% to 80% on double-spaced Times New Roman 12-point type. Would give product minus stars if I could. Where do I get my money back?
