Summary: In just three words...
Review: "Perfection" is Perfect! Hooking up this scanner was the easiest install I've ever done, and it comes with a lot of software, has been trouble-free and gives great output at lightening speeds. This is probably the last scanner I'll ever buy. At 1200x2400 dots per inch (dpi) OPTICAL resolution, (not interpolated, or 'computer enhanced') which can be THEN be enhanced to as high as 9600 x 9600 dpi, it's almost a microscope! :) It features one-button scan operation, (under Win98) which can be configured to launch whichever scanner application you want to automatically open and receive the scan. Would be worth it at TWICE this price! A definate buy!

It also has an optional transparency unit (which I shall buy soon), which is supposed to allow you to use the scanner with slides! I'll post info on that when I get it! In the meantime, buy it!

Summary: Great Product at a Great Price
Review: Compared to other scanners on the market, the Epson 1200U is a great buy. This is my second scanner and it is vastly superior to my last. Enough praise cannot be heaped onto the software, from the Twain driver to the 3rd party software bundle. Installation via the USB connection lived up to all the promise of USB- quick, easy and flawless (I'm running W98SE, which is none of those things). Within 10 minutes of opening the box I was producing great looking images. The machine scans quickly and quietly. Features I like are the removable cover and the power switch, two things alot of scanners lack. It's relatively small footprint and low profile (height), combined with the long power and USB cords made finding a place for it easy. So far I have created about 250 images, without any glitches or surprises. I can't think of anything I would add to it, but I wish I knew about the 1200U Photo model before I made my purchase. If you scan transparencies, that might be worth the extra cost.

Summary: everything it's cracked up to be
Review: I can't add anything to the glowing praise given by other reviewers except to say, it's all true! I had an old Umax I was very happy with and wanted to keep, but I recently bought a new Dell computer...the Dell salesman lied and my old SCSI card wasn't compatible...a new card would've cost about the same as this scanner so I opted for that USB convenience and a new machine. Based solely on the recommendations here, I crossed my fingers and went for the Epson B104091 Perfection 1200U. This was the easiest hardware I've ever installed, 20 minutes from box to first scan, feature-rich, amazing resolution, very reasonable price for what you get. There are more expensive scanners that don't do as much and cheaper ones that will only break your heart...so buy this one!

Summary: No XP Driver
Review: I have owned this scanner for about a year. Its performance was decent but not what I would expect from a PC Mag Editors' Choice. Photos were often disappointing, and negative scanning is mediocre. It doesn't work at all any more. Why? Because Epson hasn't gotten around to supplying an XP driver, and I bought a great new XP computer in November 2001. EVERY device I own (from printer to camera) readily worked with XP except this scanner. The Epson website has promised an XP driver for "early 2002" since November 2001; it's now February 2002, and there is still no driver, and Epson doesn't answer email. Do yourself a favor: don't buy this scanner if you have XP, and think seriously about buying anything from a company that doesn't support its products.

Summary: Beats the heck out of HP
Review: I just bought the Epson 1200U from Amazon. Great service and a great scanner. I had a HP Scanjet 5100C and couldn't get service from HP customer support that was worth a damn so I gave up and bought a new Epson 1200U and I love it.

Summary: You'll pee in your pants if you switch to the Epson 1200 USB
Review: I just upgraded from a Visioneer Paperport One Touch to the Epson 1200 USB and WOW - what a difference.

First the USB port is so much better than the parallel port off the printer - no more annoying waiting for connecting (also the reason I switched from the One Touch - I could no longer connect) to the scanner.

Second, the OCR actually works. Scan under OCR and then just drop it into the application you desire and presto, it is converted. And I'm talking converted. It converts different fonts, sizes, and bolds to the application so that the entire document can be manipulated.

For the extra $, the Epson is WELL worth it.

Summary: Windows 2000 drivers actually work, scanner a beauty!
Review: I needed a scanner that worked in Windows 2000, and decided to take a chance - based on other reviews posted here - with the Epson Perfection 1200U. The short of it is, the scanner worked right out of the box. Setup was easy, the Windows 2000 drivers I downloaded from Epson's web site installed without a glitch, and the software bundled with the scanner can't be beat. I was especially delight to find included the Presto PageManager, which is a kind of ACDSee thumbnail browser (with myriad other functions), and with it's Presto!Wrapper utility, which saves your image in a self-executing file to send to friends who might not have imaging software. Very cool.

The scanner is also the fastest I've owned, and the Twain software for scanning is multi-configurable for auto-sizing, exposing, et al of your image. Very very nice.

I'm very very pleased with this scanner, especially after I had bought an Acer 620U on the sole basis of its supposedly being Windows 2000 ready - only to find (to my horror and frustration) that the drivers for the Acer were bug-ridden and conflicted with my USB Iomega Zip Drive. I also had a Mustek 600II-CD, but had to give it the boot when Mustek said they weren't planning on supporting Windows 2000. So you can imagine my delight when the Epson Perfection 1200U not only worked right off the bat, but proved to be an unbeatlable value for the money considering the superior bundled software (Presto! PageManager, Adobe PhotoDeluxe, Broderbund Print Shop Press Writer, and ArcSoft's PhotoPrinter). Further, the scanner is fast, quiet, the quality of the image output is excellent, and there are other features I haven't even begun to explore. Easy and simple for home use, powerful and multi-layered enough for business use (I do both). An excellent product!

Summary: Use with ease right out of the box
Review: I purchased this Epson B104091 Perfection 1200U USB Scanner (PC/Mac)for my daughter who just recently started using a pc. This product was so easy to setup and use that my daughter (who couldn't figure out how to save a word file)was able to setup this scanner and scan pictures all within an hour. The reviews for this product are right on target because it's a great product for the price.
