Summary: Good enough for home user
Review: It works great so far since I purchased this scanner two weeks ago from local Staples even though my computer is 3 years old NEC Ready 340T AMD300MHz running Windows 98. It is connected through usb hub with self-powered mode. I scanned a 4x6 color photo at 300dpi. It took only 25 seconds. Scanned image was good enough for home casual user. If you really want to get professional quality scanned color photo image, you should get real photo scanner ... . I scanned some art work, poster, pictures from art magazine. Scanned images were really sharp. If you are not satisfied with color, you can easily adjust with using photo editing software. I use Corel Photo-Paint 9. My friend who is professional graphic designer was impressed by the result. I guess that you have to know how to use it before complaining. ... I definitely recommend it.

Summary: Great Buy!
Review: Was going to purchase an Epson, but was scared off after reading the reviews. Decided to give the Canon a try. Very happy with the purchase. Affordable, great quality scans, easy to use, comes with lots of software. Small, quiet, and inexpensive. Works great on my Gateway P4 running WinXP. Perfect for the home user. The only drawback? Installation instructions were a bit confusing as it came with two installation disks for Windows XP. (Hint- use the standard CD, not the one labeled "WinXP Only") Other reveiws listed this scanner as being "slow", but I found only a few seconds difference between this and my old Visioneer scanner. I would highly recommend this product for someone looking to do casual scanning of photos and documents at home.

Summary: Greatest bling for the buck
Review: Pros: Very small size. Can store vertically with the stand included. Z-lid for bulky scans. Easy to use.

Cons: When looking at the scan on the computer screen sometimes they look horrible, but when printed they look great!! This is the Canon software that is included, not the scanner.

You can't get any better for this price. I wanted an entry level scanner to scan CD covers. This was a perfect choice. I even forgot I have it sometimes because I store is vertically against my monitor so it takes up hardly any space. I love this scanner and it hasn't given me any trouble at all. I love the metallic grey/blue color too!!

Summary: Great price, clear photo scans, and usable, portable design
Review: This scanner is a great buy. Whoever designed this should win some sort of award; it doesn't need a power cord and draws it's power from the supplied USB cable. This is the smallest 8.5x11 flatbed scanner I've ever seen. It is truly portable--about the size of a couple of legal pads stacked on top of each other. It takes up very little space on your desk. The quality of color photo scans is also clear and vibrant for a scanner in this price range; it's not professional quality, but at this price, who's complaining? Most importantly, this is the most usable of any scanner I've ever seen. I had this baby up and running in under 5 minutes and making great scans of some photos from last summer. It's one touch mode is great; it's easy to set up and customize each of the 3 front buttons. I'm still amazed at how well-designed and usable this scanner is. Highly recommended for home or small office use.

Summary: Convenient
Review: I was a little concerned when I created my first scan because resolution was terrible. After switching from the default (75 dpi) to 400 (it can go up to 1200), scans turned out great. Also, had problems scanning a photo from magazine the first time. Once I check the box "Magazine - Reduce Moire", everything was fine. Bottom line is that the scanner and software have with a lot of features to improve scans if you have the patience to test the various options.

It was very easy to set up (I use Win2k). The single USB is a great option (no additional power cord required) although I found the 5ft cable too short to connect to my tower that sits on the floor. Also includes a bracket to hold the scanner vertically - not sure how useful this really is especially if you're trying to scan book pages.

My only real gripe is that the scans cut 1/8 inches off the top edge when you position the scan item up against the guides. To get the whole photo, I have to position it more in the middle of the scanner. Other than this, I'm quite happy with this scanner.

New Comments (1/18/2002): My second gripe after using this scanner for over a month is that there's no way to easily and accurately copy an 8.5x11" sheet of paper. The print of the image is always shifted 0.25" to the right. According to Canon, the problem happens because nearly all printers have a printable area that is less than a sheet of paper. (My Canon printer's left margin is 0.25 inches.) So rather than cutting off the edges of the image, it just shifts the image.

To get a descent copy, I have to preview and manually crop the scan prior to printing. This makes the "copy" button on the scanner of little use. I've sent in requests to Canon to implement a few simple software fixes to address this seemingly fundamental problem, but who knows if they'll actually do anything about it. (I don't know if other scanners can correct for this somehow).

Summary: Great Scanner
Review: I've been using this for about 2 years and it's excellent. I use it to scan photos and documents (you can scan a document and edit it on your computer with the bundled software). The quality of scans are superb. You can scan a small picture at high resolution and this scanner will give you a big, clear one. Although I don't use it so much now that I have a digital camera, I'm not selling mine for now cos it's great and it just might come in handy sometimes. Highly recommended.

Summary: Good stuff cheap
Review: This is a fine little scanner for light duty. Doesn't take up a lot of space, and doesn't need a separate power cord. That's a huge plus. I take a star off for the installation and driver software. The Japanese manufacturers, try as they might, just can't seem to perfect the software fit and finish. The prompts are sometimes confusing, and the interface does comply with Windows standards. The icons are weird. Why not just use standard menus???

Summary: Great scanner
Review: This is one of the best scanners for the money. It is very slim, gets it's power from the USB cable so you don't need an extra power cable, and comes with good scanning software. It also produces great scans.

The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is that it does not come with any OCR software. I consider OCR software to be essential with any scanner, so you can scan in newspaper articles or whatnot and get the text from it.

Summary: Now that's what I call industrial design!
Review: This scanner is sleek, cheap and scans almost as well as the ...scanners at my office. The designers were almost showing off when they made this thing take its power from the USB port; no power cords! The software interface that comes with it is a little clumsy ...you can't beat this scanner.

Summary: The best $80 I ever spent!
Review: I did some research on scanners and this seemed to be the best one in its price range. It IS. I've scanned about a hundred pictures in the 5 months since I bought it, and haven't had any problems. The detail and color on scanned photos are great. The scanner has definitely paid for itself, as I don't have to buy any more kodak picture cds to be able to email photos to relatives. The scanner comes with photo editing software but I prefer adobe photoshop. I recommend this scanner to everyone.
