Summary: Tech Support Impossible to Reach
Review: Don't buy anything from Microtek unless you want to spend an addition $100 in phone bills to tech support to get it working. WARNING: Their support phone number is NOT toll free. I spent a total of 60 minutes ON HOLD to find out that the software that came with the scanner wouldn't work with my processor. Once you reach tech support, they are helpful, but it is VERY expensive to get through to them.

Summary: Pieces of junk!
Review: I bought one, hooked it up and did the power test and it started making terrible noises like it was locked up. Brought that one back and got another. Scanned one picture in beautifuly. The next one had tiny colored lines in it. The one after that had bigger ones. Now there are HUGE stripes across the scans. That's two strikes! I don't think I am going to even try for a third.

Summary: XP Updated Drivers work
Review: I concur with the prior reviews. The Scanmaker X-6 was a nice functional product for it's time, but I really had trouble getting it to install and run in Windows 98. After a couple of frustrating sessions, I got it to work (the included software Dynacion Swiss Army Knife did the trick) and it has worked well for several years. The already mentioned quirk of not recognizing the scanner unless it is turned on at computer system boot up was the biggest annoyance.

I just upgraded to Windows XP and the scanner was obviously not compatible. Went to Microtek's site and downloaded the updated software drivers. First install attempt ... the install program crashed. Waited a couple of days. Second attempt... install program ran, but then on reboot got a can't find some kind of .dll file message. Uninstalled the scanner and reinstalled. Third time.. ran install (setup.exe program in Disk 1 of download) again and it worked perfectly. Set up and ran on reboot.

Scan quality is still good... not as good as new scanner and is relatively slow (Extended parallel port EPP Interface), but also $100-$200 cheaper than buying a new scanner.

Good product, finicky "not so hot" to "crummy" install software. Nonexistent support from company other than downloads. I'm not an expert software, computer guy, just persistent and did get it to work. I'm using it with XP ... also works well with XP control panel scanner icon and software... but will probably upgrade to better scanner in next few months (Apr 2004 post)

Summary: PIECE OF JUNK - DITTO
Review: I did not buy this product from Amazon but do want to relate our experience. It was 4 months of a nightmare with software that ultimately corrupted the win95 operating system. The tech support people do not have a clue--part of the problems were generated by the tech support staff; I got 4 different solutions to the same problem [none of them worked]. I will never ever buy a Microtek product of any sort based on this experience. I urge others to boycott this company. I am amazed that they get good product reviews; the only thing I can figure out is that the people doing the product reviews are techies and can fix the problems as they happen. If you are not a techie do not even consider this product--you are on your own when you buy it regardless of their support claims.

Review: I followed steps 1 through 5 of the instructions, Windows 2000 did the rest and at least one aspect of the switch to 2k went flawlessly. I picked the X6 because it's one of the few "affordable" scanners supported by the new OS. So it ain't a RICOH... For $100 it delivers.

Summary: Great Buy!
Review: I had no problems connecting or configuring the MicroTek ScanMaker X6. I brought it home hooked it up, installed the software I needed, turned it on, restarted the computer and went right to work scanning photos. It could not have been easier. The directions were easy to follow but almost unnecessary if not there. I highly recommend it to others. It does a great job scanning and the included ScanWizard software has many great features for manipulating the images scanned

I would recommend that users do their homework before making a decision to buy any product from any company. Know what the system requirements are and whether your machine meets them before making that purchase. Generally, problems encountered during installation and use tend to be resource/registry conflicts or hardware limitations. My only negative experience was lines in a scanned image, this the result of another user attempting to print to my printer at the same time (I am using the parallel interface).

I am discouraged by the reported tech support nightmares but I have not needed to contact them. It is well to remember that most tech support personnel are not experts but read from a list of known problems/solutions that may or may not match the customer's queries. Perhaps a local consultant/tech is a choice when encountering problems with Tech Support. A few letters to customer support at MicroTek might make them aware of the need to change their method of contact with the customer.

Having a great time with my ScanMakerX6!
