Summary: Good while it lasted...
Review: I bought this scanner < 2 years ago & it died on my within about 18 months of light to moderate use. While it was working, it did a nice job, however. Buyer beware -- life of this product may be extremely limited.

Summary: Hangs all the time.
Review: I bought this scanner. I found it to be quite useless. the software hangs my machine all the time. The light on the scanner doesn't go off (even with the patch from HP). On top of that, it won't run on anything other than win98 and HP says they won't support win2000. what are you going to do with it after 2 years. stick with win98 all the time just because you have this scanner. I would suggest, you stay away from this one.

Summary: Non-stop problems
Review: I had this scanner for less than 6 months, and had non-stop problems with it. It would work OK for a while, but then the software would hang (I'd get a message saying that the computer could not find the scanner). For a while, reinstalling the software in "safe" mode worked, but eventually even that didn't work. HP tech support was useless (even after long distance calls to their Colorado help center). I finally gave up and bought an Epson 1200, which is awesome -- better resolution, no software glitches, and a competitive price.One thing to be wary of is the warranty on this scanner -- I think it's only 90 days. That's usually not a good sign!

Summary: When you can get it to work, the HP4200cse does a great job.
Review: I have had nothing but problems trying to use this scanner. The software constantly locks up. A message is then displayed stating that the scanner cannot be found. The light stays on. There is a patch on the HP site. It however, did not correct the problem. When and if you can get it to work, it does a fantastic job. Very good resolution and accurate colors. Sometimes you can remove the software and then reload it to get the scanner to work. If you are lucky and it starts you had better do all your scanning as it may not work once you have gone to a different application and try again to use it. I am very disappointed with HP's customer support. If the product is over 90 days old, it costs an arm and leg to talk with anyone. I plan to replace it with an Epson 1200.

Review: I have to echo the original review. In fact, mine lasted exactly 18 months. These things DO NOT LAST! However, it works fine for 18 months. After that, it just DIES. HP is lagging badly in quality the last few years, and this product is a good example.

Summary: Could not be happier...
Review: I love my HP scanner, plain and simple. Not only was it a breeze to install (cause it came with one of those dummy proof fold out diagrams) but also I never have to worry about how to configure it when I need to scan something fast. The 3 buttons on top are even too much, I only use one 90% of the time. And when I press that, it asks me beforehand which program I wanta send the scan to as well as opening it for me automatically after scanning... But the best part about this scanner was the free Adobe Photo Home Deluxe 3.0 edition it came with... It is sooooo user friendly that you'll be doing things with your scanner more often than you think. I retouch old scratched up photos like a pro, I montage stuff like any tabloid, AND I can even make cards using their wizards step by step tabs... I have tried other scanners with similiar abilites, but they're no way as direct and easy to use as this one. I forgot to mention that I can take any photo and make it my wallpaper using this program, after tweaking it... And that's another plus... The color this scanner reproduces is even better than the original... well atleast on my monitor... Do yourselves a favor, if you're looking for alot of bells and whistles that you WILL use, get this machine...

Review: I read the other reveiws was worried about buying this scanner.. But HP is a great company and I have had products from HP that have lasted for years so I decided to take a chance. Let me tell you.. This is the BEST scanner I have ever used.. I am running win98 and have no problems at all. This was the best decision I ever made! Buy it, you will be glad you did.

Review: I wholeheartedly agree with the many positive reviews that this scanner has already received. Having used scanners for several years in my work life, my curmudgeonly side thought that the "three button operation" would be more of a marketing gimmick than an everyday feature, but after using it I have to say I find it incredibly useful! Since most of the images I scan are meant to be emailed, the ability to hit a single button on the scanner and have my photo scanned at screen resolution AND automatically attached to a mail message in my preferred mail app is just AWESOME! In terms of image quality, this scanner is also a can't miss. You'll be able to scan images at high enough resolution for high quality, professional looking prints. And in terms of performance, the scanner has been flawless (save the lamp problem, which is now fixed). It performs quickly and quietly. With regards to at least one reviewer's note of inconsistent lamp behaviour, this is a known problem and HP has a patch available which remedies it. You can get more info about this and download the patch from HP's site at http://www.hp.com/cposupport/scanners/software/sj445en.exe.html. Quick note: remember that, at least for now, this scanner is for Windows 98 computers only and requires a USB port. Thankfully, unlike HP's printers, this scanner comes with a USB cable.
