Summary: good, dsii.exe has a bug tho
Review: ...referring to the SDII.exe process taking up all of your CPU time. I too have this problem (windows XP), but I have discovered ...that the application is only used to monitor the scanner's front panel buttons-- if you disable DSII.exe in the startup manager, you'll be fine.In all, I love the scanner, and I never use the front panel buttons anyway...

Summary: A nightmare !
Review: DO NOT BUY IF YOU HAVE XP. After reading all the comments of other customers in [retail stores] and Amazon and comparing other scanner I figured that the system could have problems but it had a great price and it was worth giving it a try. I decided I would buy the system and if it did not work then I would just return it. For this, I decided to buy from a local store and thus have an easier way to return it. I bought it from [retail store], at a very good price. I got the extended warranty and with a 14 day full refund policy, went happily home to install it'. WHAT A NIGHTMARE !! I installed the system to my Vaio PC with XP but it did not recognize it. The manufacturer claims it is ready for XP but it was not. I tried everything, but the installation had only gone halfway and there was no way to uninstall the system. It prompted that a TWAIN file had been corrupted. After struggling for 2 hours I went to their website (customer service only works till 5pm PT). There I was given instructions to uninstall the system. Part of the instruction was to search for all Twain files and delete them' I was a bit hesitant to delete .DLL files but went ahead and did it. Bad mistake'. After that the system went crazy. When I rebooted my computer it told me it could not find a RUNDLL module, my Internet Explorer stopped working since it did not recognize my internet connection, and thus I had no way of getting online to see what was going on. I tried system restore, but it did not work. After 2 more frustrating hours I went to bed and had a nigthmare that I wont get into. The next day I called Microtek customer service, and off course I was not able to get through. Then I called Sony to get support and they said, 'sorry you are out of warranty if you want to speak with us it will cost you [$] per minute'. (that is another story) After having read other comments of other people trying to fix their systems for hours and days I decided not to go that way and DECIDED TO REBOOT and format my drive C. The scanner is back in the store 24 hours after I bought it, waiting for another customer... I will probably buy a [less costly] 600dpi, since I am sure I did not really need 48 bit color or 1200 dpi.

Summary: For the Money, BINGO! This is a great scanner
Review: First off let me say this, I was really going to buy a MicroTek scanner. I didn't know the name brand and all their products were priced very low, so I just assumed they were cheaply made. So I went and bought a HP scanjet 4400C, which ahd about the same specifications. I used it for about 3 weeks, fighting through scan quality problems left and right when canning at 600ppi or more. I couldn't get through them after resinstalling the drivers and software, replacing the scanner with a new one out of the box, etc... So I sniffed around looking for another comparable scanner, I looked at Canon and Epson, but this one jumped out at me because it had a built in Slide scanner (which I haven't used yet). I bought it thinking "well I'll probably have to take this one back, but what the hell the price is right and it's worth the shot". Needless to say I was very pleasently surprised when I installed this scanner. First worked first time (Under XP none the less) without any headache. Second the TWAIN driver is much better than HPs, in advanced mode you have awesome control (and you cna save your preferences for later use), and it imports sweetly to Photoshop. Thirdly, it is fast, much faster than the HP, I scanned a 8x10 at 600ppi in about half the time. Here's the other thing, how much scanner power do you really need? Do you really need 48bit color depth, probably not, you can't do much with those scans anyway, only tiff, raw, and some specific vendor formats can handle those files. So what are you going to do with a 350M 600ppi 8x10 scan? How many times are you going to scan something at more than 600ppi (film maybe).

Summary: Great for Pictures, but forget about slides & negatives!...
Review: I already owned a scanner from Visioneer. But my father was moving and wanted to throw away hundreds of slides that he had. When my brother and I were very young, my father got into take slides. These slides have a lot of memories that I wanted to save and digitize so I went shopping for a new scanner that could scan slides. I decided that instead of spending money on a specialized film & slide scanner that I would purchase a flatbed that had an adapter. I compared the Microtek 4800 to an HP model and came home with the Microtek. Plug it in, everything went smooth. First things I noticed were the faster speed and much better image quality than my Visioneer 7200. I was happy to make the purchase. But then, I went to original task at hand. I pulled out a slide and gave it a shot. THE MOST HORRIBLE IMAGE QUALITY I HAVE EVER SEEN. The same thing goes for the negative film too. If you are looking to scan slides and film, invest in a good one. I sold my self short by being cheap and buying a scanner with this adapter. I still like the scanner, but for positive scanning only. The OCR function works great. I wish it had a fax feature though. The power button issue is not a problem for me because I have a switched surge protector under my monitor that allows me to switch off/on peripherals at my desire. ...

Review: I bought this scanner and I scanned one picture. Then it broke. But since I liked this scanner, and since PC World ranked this scanner #1 at the time I sent it back to Microtek. You call their number from their website and get the shipping information then you ship it, the whole process was really easy. Then they sent me a new scanner for absolutely free, and since then it has worked really great.

Review: I bought this scanner from BJ's wholesales club and used it for 2 weeks. I am a software engineer who works with computers for living but I could not figure out how to use this software. This is the first product in my life which comes without a manual. It comes with a one sheet documentation . For example: It says how to use "Advanced set up" but it never writes a way how to invoke advanved mode. It took me 2 hours to figure out how to invoke advanced mode. After all those efforts I was able to use it to scan my 8 x 10 photo graph and the scanning quality seems resonable good. Then I printed the photo and it came out green tainted. I have no idea why this is happening but for sure I am done with this scanner. To make sure there is nothing wrong with my printer I printed another photo from my digital camera and it comes out great. I have not decided which scanner to buy but I feel like going for some HP scanner. My recommendation: Buy a reputed company product.

Summary: TERRIBLE MANUFACTURING
Review: I did not purchase this item from Amazon.com, but I was curious to read reviews about this scanner. Like another customer, I too received 2 of these scanners from an online purchase: on both, the glass was not properly attached to the scanner, and one came with broken glass. This poor manufacturing is inexcusable.

Summary: Scanning Slides
Review: I found that this scanner was very useful in scanning a large number of slides. Some of these slides were more than 30 years old so it took a while to edit them. However, I found the slide adapter convenient and the resulting slide images quite accurate. If the slide was in good condition then the scanned image was sharp and the colors true. This was a great and inexpensive way to save old memories!
