Review: Like another CanoScan poster here, I too have a pretty bad case of USB Peripheralphobia. My USB ports have been crunchy at best. But this Canoscan N1240U scanner was ridiculously easy to install and use. From plugging in the cable to popping in the CD-ROM and loading the software to scanning my first photo, elapsed time was about six minutes--and that included a restart. The scan was ridiculously simple--a little slow, but hey, my home office is not a service bureau--and the images are STUNNING. A host of image-editing tools are available within the scanning program, PhotoStudio. The scanner also came with Adobe Photoshop Elements and OmniPage OCR software. A separate CD-ROM is dedicated to Windows XP users.I am thrilled to death with this product. And with the new lower price, don't pass it up! I did a good deal of comparison shopping on this model, and the best price is right here.

Summary: No 3-D Glasses Required!
Review: My CanoScan N1240U arrived this week from Amazon.com and I immediately took it out of the box and set it up. The ease of just a USB port hook-up is enough to sell this scanner to a consumer interested in simplistic electronics. The sleek one inch design of this model makes the unbelievable, BELIEVABLE. The software is generous and there is plenty for me to get acquainted with. And the picture clarity? Sensaysh!! Each scanned photo appears to jump right out at you, and that's why I declare no 3-D glasses are required. I continue to be amazed at the sharp detail this CanoScan N1240U delivers to each picture. Amazon.com is the best place to purchase this scanner because the current price available is the best on the market to the consumer. Trust me!

Summary: Idiot Proof (Almost)
Review: Setup was quick and easy, and the scanner works as advertised. The XP Software included with the scanner gave no difficulties at all. I like the multiple bundles of application software. I can scan photos, magazines, as well as text. The OCR recognition software converts to text with very few problems. I do not find it slow or noisy, and am very pleased with my purchase.

Summary: No power cord sold me
Review: The best thing about this scanner is that it only has a USB cable - no power cord to mess with. It's very compact - only 1 inch thick. It has several buttons on the front - the most useful is that you can send a copy directly to the printer. I've been very happy with its quality. The included software is great - especially Adobe PhotoElements. In fact, that software is why I bought this model as oppose to Canon's less expensive offerings.

Summary: The scanner that made my dreams come true
Review: The Canon CanoScan N1240U Scanner has been absolutely wonderful for me. Installation was a snap, simply throwing in the CD provided by canon and following the easy on-screen directions. I did need to visit canon's web site to obtain Windows XP Drivers, but that may not be an issue now that Windows XP is more of a mainstream product. The Scanner comes with enough imaging software to handle all of your scanning needs. The buttons built onto the scanner make scanning, copying, and e-mailing pictures too easy! It's like adding a copy machine to your home or office. The scanner is incredibly small, maybe only an INCH thick! It's completely USB connected AND powered, which means that one very small cord is all that is coming out of the scanner. The photo quality is absolutely phenomenal -- Paired with my Canon Printer and photo paper, it's able to reproduce *identical* duplicates or enlargements of most ANYTHING I scan. I recommend this scanner, wholeheartedly, to anyone who's looking to invest in one. The price is WELL WORTH IT. Don't settle for a cheap imitation! :)

Summary: No support for OS X
Review: The Canon web site has been promising OS X support fro over a year, but they don't seem interested and have not responded to inquiries. Scanner is OK, but having to start Classic mode every time you use it gets old in a hurry. Mac owners beware!

Summary: Somewhere between bad and really bad
Review: The good things: It's small and light. That's it. Now for the rest. It is very slow. At 600dpi color it is as slow as the 3-year old Visioneer I am throwing out as obsolete. It is not at all quiet, although this doesn't bother me. It is incapable of making a dimensionally accurate scan in any mode. Depending on whether copy or scan mode, B&W or color and the resolution used, the size in one or both dimensions is off from 1% to 23%. I spent a few hours with their tech people and they confirmed all this. They don't know why. There is no way to calibrate for it. They told me they consider SOME (???) inaccuracy in scan size to be normal!!! Just how much they didn't know. The ArcSoft software is utter garbage. Again, the Visioneer PaperPort software I am discarding as obsolete is more competent and useful. Conclusions: If size accuracy matters, this is not for you. If speed is important, ditto. If you need quiet, no way. Oh, one last thing. Canon techs know the software is junk. If you confront them with too many software problems they will send you to ArcSoft. Good luck!

Summary: Exactly What You Want
Review: This is a VERY simple to install and use scanner that creates and exports excellent product. I was not sure what I was going to get, especially at this affordable price. I am more than pleased, I am happy and satisfied with this choice. I am now underway with a long-planned project of scanning a lifetime's collection of family photos to save on cd-rom to share with family.

Summary: Great Hardware, Really Buggy Software ..
Review: This is my second Canon scanner, and likely my last. Had had this one less than a year and am having many problems w/ the drivers ( Im running a new DELL, Windows 2000 Pro OS ). Have re-loaded drivers it came with, gone to the Canon support page and installed latest drivers, but nothing seems to help. Running diagnostics on the scanner succeeds and feel fairly certain its not a scanner hardware issue. Have had driver expection errors all along w/ this scanner, but has goten to where it is no longer usable. I also have a Canon Elph 110, and have the same feelings about it: great hardware and design, really really buggy software drivers and applications ( this coming from a guy w/ a Master's in CS and professional Software QA Mgr ).
