Summary: Fantastic machine
Review: This is a great machine. I have had this machine for a few months and have not really had any problems with it. I would only say that I have tried to scan in lithographs and it does not work for them (it gives crazy looking pictures maybe a strange coating or something) but for photo's and other pictures it is amazing. I have Windows ME (I know it is not my fault) and I have found that the control centre program has problems as it only allows you to scan if there is something in the feeder even if you want to just use the flatbed, but this can be overcome by putting some paper in the feeder and removing it when the scanner window opens. It also prints out so well I am amazed by the picture quality. This fantastic machine and have it at home, the cartridges seem to go on and on and I am waiting for the first one to run out. The fax is easy to use (although I have not used it as a PC Fax yet) and the copying works at a good rate too.

Definately recommended, simple to use, just a few small glitches.

Summary: Designed for Windows XP? Really??
Review: I bought this machine to replace an old HP deskJet and was sorry I did. It advertises "designed for Windows XP" on the box, but the software bundled with it is not compatible with XP at all. What are they thinking at Brother?? I called Brother Technical Support to sort out exactly what "designed for Windows XP" means to them. I quickly discovered their tech support does not know the difference between a driver and a utility. Where do they find these ...??

The tech support person promised to call me back the next day and let me know what software I would need to give this unit full capability under Windows XP (I was mainly concerned with OCR software and was willing to buy it at my expense). Their technical support never called me back. I guess they either can't operate a phone or maybe they just wanted to avoid the un-answerable question. I returned it and bought an HP 6110 instead. It is a much more solid machine and does not need to have support right out of the box. I guess you get exactly what you pay for.

Summary: Several problems. Maybe machine-specific?
Review: This product is not as well-built as my previous fax-printer: HP K60. There are severl problems with this MFC: 1. When I connect it to my PC (Window XP) with a USB cable, my computer could not shut down properly. When I connect it to my PC with a IEEE 1284 cable, my computer was able to shut down properly. 2., I had to purchase the USB and IEEE 1284 cable. 3., The function screen keeps saying that I have a paper jam when I don't have a paper jam. 5-10 years ago, I had a black and white laser MFC from Brother. I also encountered many paper jam problems with that MFC. At that time, the paper either kept jamming up, or the screen kept saying that there was a paper jam when there was not a paper jam. 4., The white scanning light bulb would not turn off. I don't know if it's supposed to turn off after a few minutes, but it's on all the time, even after many days of non-usage. I wonder if the scanning light bulb will last long if it's on all the time. 5., When I print with recycled printing paper (I use the back of non-essential printed papers), the feeder would often pick up two pages at once, instead of feeding one page at a time. 6., the quality of the Normal resolution of MFC 5100c is not as good as the Normal resolution of my previous HP K60. I need to go to SuperFine in order to get acceptable resolution.

The good qualities about this product is: 1., it prints much faster than my previous HP K60. 2., the MFC color is slightly richer than the HP K60. 3., the price is cheaper. 4., it's has a flatbed, so it can scan bulky or hard documents.

Summary: Great multi task machine!!
Review: I find this machine to be a great deal. It performs great as a fax machine and I like the lift top copier feature much better than the feeder only copiers. My previous printer was a very slow Cannon 4100 bubble jet, so I am impressed with printing speed for both black & white and color print/copy jobs. I am also able to scan images into my computer via the flat top copier/scanner. I have Windows XP and thanks to the easy to read instructions I was able to download the driver info from the Brother website and the machine works perfect.

If your looking for a general purpose machine this is it!

Summary: MFC-5100c
Review: I don't understand how this product could get a bad review from anyone, especially concerning problems with XP. I have XP Pro and have not had 1 single problem out of this machine in the 9 months since I bought it. The printing speed is good, the scanning speed is good, and the fax/pc fax is excellent. Of course I have common sense and some people seem to lack it; when you print color pics at high resolution it will take longer than printing black and white text at a draft resolution, something some folks just do not understand. Yes it has a large footprint, but I guarantee it is smaller than the footprints left by a separate printer, scanner, copier, and fax. I highly recommend this to anyone interested in a multifunction machine.

Summary: A very capable unit if you are willing to read the manual
Review: It's a bit large but this is very functional unit. I had no trouble with Windows XP and was able to set it up as a Network printer for my other computers (Windows Me and 95 very easily. Unlike my old HP T45 unit which had a slow clunky startup everytime you turn on your computer this is much faster. There are fixes for the resolution of the scanner on the Website. When you are printing pictures or graphics I found it better to set it to Photo (not auto) in the Advanced setup.

Summary: Brother MFC 5100-C
Review: I recently received this machine for Christmas as a replacement to my Epson 660C printer. The quality of the printing and copying is great on this machine. The scanner is extremely fast. I like having a flatbed copier/scanner with a sheet feeder so that I don't have to do pages one page at a time. The overall quality of the machine is great. The convenience of having a 5 in one machine is great and saves alot of space. It easy to learn how to use this machine.

Summary: Print quality terrible, no software support for Windows XP
Review: I thought I'd found a deal on this printer, as it is cheaper than a comparable HP model, the ink costs less, and the scanner resolution is higher. I was seduced by the built-in flatbed scanner, color fax capability, and color copying.

Now I know why this multi-function big-foot is cheaper. First, the footprint is gigantic, and second, it may have some great features (not all of which I got around to testing out), but it can't handle the basics: color and b&w printing. Three of the four test print page colors were fuzzy, even after five print-head cleanings. The print quality on normal resolution was not quite as good as my old HP OfficeJet 500 set on draft quality. To get a halfway decent color printout, I had to print at the absolute highest resolution (Very Fine), which took approximately 9 minutes to print one color page with some clip-art on it (no photos).

Also, I could not find anything on the box that stated that the scanning and document management software was not supported in Windows XP. I had to open the CD-ROM to find that out. The scanning capability isn't worth much to me if I can't do anything with the documents.

Needless to say, I don't find any of this acceptable and will be returning it just as soon as I pack the whole thing back up again! I'll be going back to good ol' HP.
