Summary: Nice scanner-Lower res. than competition and not as fast
Review: 3 1/2 stars. Scanner installed without a glitch running Windows ME. It is very nice looking and has a compact footprint. My wife could use it to email a friend's obituary to some familly members without much help from me, so it is very easy to use.I purchased largely because of the Compactflash/Smart media card readers built in. I own a Canon G1 wich has a usb connection to download my pics to the computer and it seems to be just as fast as the compact flash reader on this scanner(the camera has excellent upload speed), therefore the reader is really no big deal for me as I thought it would improve on the upload speed. The Color reproduction seems fine, but not perfect as I would like (I am, as my wife would quickly tell you, VERY picky). I noticed that items with texture, such as a circuit board or any 3d object does not scan as well as the Epson 1240u that I tried out at an electronics store. The Color on that unit was also superior, as well as speed and it also has twice the resolution wich could help with enlarging small scans for printing. 600x1200 is fine for most anything else though. I have read so-so reviews on the Epson software. The Visioneer software is very good. These are in the same class price wise, so I am considering getting the Epson instead. The one thing holding me back is the ease of use of the Visioneer and the smaller footprint and design. I like the way the Visioneer is designed sideways so it sits on my desk the way I think a scanner should. Overall a nice scanner, but limited due to resolution, scan quality and speed for its price range. Excellent if you need a fast Campactflash/Smartmedia card reader and are also in the market for a usb scanner as I was.

Summary: The good, the bad, and the ugly!
Review: After I recently purchased this product for use in Windows XP, I quickly downloaded the XP drivers that were needed first to run the hardware. Everything was working very smoothly, no problems at all during install or usage. Next, I popped in the CD to install and try PaperPort 7.0, and while I was installing the software, it decided to install an older version of OneTouch, thus it told me to plug in the scanner because it could not detect it, and so I had to reboot and go though the install process all over again. Whew! But at least I had PaperPort installed and working now.Next, I noticed some problems starting to surface. My scanner was producing weird lines and stretching effects while it made weird noises. So, I opened it up and watched it scan, and to my disbelief the scanner was tripping over its own ribbon cable because it was badly twisted and bent. So I took back the scanner and opened some boxes to find other cables bent very badly, and the best looking ribbon cable happen to be on display... *laugh*! But I found one worthy of taking home, and all I had to do was plug it in and go! Btw, this is my first scanner, and I'm very happy with it, the compact flash transfers much faster than using serial. It's small and lightweight, scanning speed and quality is good for my needs.

Summary: Fine scanner, Very poor device driver
Review: I got the scanner from Amazon on sale! It took me about an hour to get it to work with Win XP (Installed the so-called XP certified updated driver from Visioneer web site). Still every time I start the PC, the driver works on a randomly fashion! Apparently, this problem is very common and their customer support receives a lot of complaints about their drivers. If you have WIN XP and you dont mind re-installing the driver every once a while, it might be a good scanner for you. The scanning quality is just fine.

Summary: Between the lines
Review: I love the idea of this scanner and when it works, it works great. I had one for use in a journalism lab at a univesity. At first it was great. Then lines started showing up. Small lines soon became big black bars. Numerous calls for assistance resulted in little help. I wanted a replacement and finally after much effort got one from Visioneer. The replacement did not include the USB cable, software or manual. And guess what? It scans with lines in every other scan. I just haven't had the energy yet to fight for a replacement of the replacement. Be patient when calling for help. Visioneer must have one line and it is always busy.

Summary: Image quality sucks
Review: I upgraded to the 7700 from the old 6100B. I'd got great scans from that scanner, so thought i'd stick with Visioneer. BIG MISTAKE! The image quality of this scanner [is bad]. I too went through many hastles trying to install on an XP machine. Finally i succeeded, but when i scan, i get bad contouring of the image (scan pictures with lots of sky, or skin tones and you can see steps in the color) and quite often, lots of lines across the scan.
After hours of technical support (most of which were waiting for someone to answer the phone), and after being instructed to reinstal the software twice, they sent me a new scanner. Same problem! I heard CIS scanners has poor image quality, but this thing is un-usable....

Summary: Great in 98se, Trouble in XP
Review: I was drawn to this scanner when I saw it at [local store]. THe sleek look, small footprint, and best of all, a built-in card reader.
Fits right on top of the equalizer on my desktop,and doesn't weigh a ton. Those are the good aspects.
Nothing but problems from the beginning. Installation of the drivers and software was a nightmare, but finally I muddled through. I had been using a PC with win98, Abit bx6v2 motherboard, 384 megs ram, P3-800, right after this scanner came out(a year or so ago?). The computer would never detect the scanner unless I would unplug the DC cord from the back of the scanner and stick it back in. Swithching off at the AC plug wouldn't do it, and I'm not sure why. Tech support was little help, and they recommended reinstalling the software over itself, or some such thing that made no sense to me(it didn't work). Took back to the store and got another one, same problem. Fine, I only occasionally scan, so I can live with having to plug and unplug for detection until a patch comes out. Guess what, no patch ever came out. The website doesn't even mention the problem. When undetected, device manager shows "unknown device" with a driver problem. Later, in January 2002, I build a new box with an Epox 8kha+ mobo, Athlon XP cpu, win98SE, totally new 80 gig drive and new drivers and everything, and guess what, SAME problem. What a crock this is. I pull that little plug out from the back of the scanner, stick it back in, and the computer detects it. I guess I'll just have to live with it. I didn't return it for a refund because it has a card reader(and no competing products did at the time). Any of this enough of a discouragement for you? Guess what? Built another box using AMD 2500+, Biostar mobo with nForce2(a few months ago) and windows 2000....and still the SAME PROBLEMS. Been noticing how the stores quit selling this one not long after it came out(I wonder why). I definitely will not ever buy another visioneer product. This one is stuck in the closet with all the other obsolete/useless hardware like old video cards and sb16s.

Summary: nothing but problems!
Review: I've had this scanner for over 3 months now. 3 months too long. Not one decent scan has come out of this... If it's not lines coming through, it's the stupid lock button icon that keeps popping up! (please verify that you have unlocked the scanner hardware) This scanner is ready to go out the 3rd story window of my home office. Sorry I needed to vent a little. Needless to say, you know what not to do.

Summary: A Twenty-First Century Scanner
Review: If you read the ads in your Sunday paper, you'll probably come across all sorts of great deals on scanners. Remember that you get what you pay for... if you're shopping for a scanner that you actually intend to use on a regular basis, then you need a well-made machine. Like this one. I was initially drawn to this scanner by sheer aesthetics. Its sleek design and small footprint produce a stark contrast to your average "big grey box", and the silver and smoke colors match well with newer Dell and HP desktops. Then I noticed the card readers. My first reaction to the inclusion of CompactFlash and SmartMedia readers in a scanner was something akin to what a sign reading "free running shoes with purchase of wheelchair" might inspire, but with reflection, I saw the value of a one-piece desktop imaging solution. Mavica owners should note that this scanner does not cost significantly more than those without this feature. Under the hood, the scanner is still a Visioneer One Touch (in other words, it's a quality product). The hardware integrates well with the PaperPort software, quickly and easily manipulating even complex documents. I do agree with another reviewer who mentioned the nightmare of using the special features of the front panel buttons, but the only one I ever use is "Scan". That irritation, the rather light features of PhotoSuite III, and the lack of toll-free support force me to round up to five stars, but the rating stands.

Summary: Drivers thin, performance subpar, glitches, colors, etc.
Review: In design, it seems sleek, useful < two card ports built right in> and fast. EXCEPT... Windows XP/XP Pro,, simply hates the drivers supplied. Constant battles to get the computer to not only recognize the scanner, but to KEEP IT installed.I have had many a fine day wasted just getting it reconfigured to work. NOTHING else is changed, yet the system constantly cant " find" the scanner. Just a nightmare that the drivers never seem to solve.
Now, performance. I have had numerous problems with severely distorted colors, mysterious " bands and streaks" across photos scanned, rendition and color way off the mark, all around, I would NEVER buy a visioneer again. I bought a 5820 to try n get buy with it, till I can afford a Minolta 5400 or Dual Scan elite, the visioneer 5820 wont even operate or configure with XP.visoneer has a lousy reputation with Windows, and Win XP goes to great lengths to make sure you DONT purchase another Visioneer scanner. I cant rate it lower than 1 star, or i would.
