Summary: dumb instructions for installation
Review: The sleek design and the high resolution of the scanner attracted me in the first place. But to my surprise, I had big, big troubles to install the device on my labtop which is running windows 98 first edition. It supposed to be plug and play, right? How come I will be so dumb unable to install the device? So the next day I tried my friend's laptop which happens to be running Windows 98 too. Well, It took me less than 5 minutes to setup the device driver, and get it functional. But back to my own home, I still had same problem to set it up. I tried install the hardware manually through the control panel, selecting the "have disk" option, or the "browse" option, but the installation process keeps telling me "no compatible driver was found" on the installation CD-ROM. The installation instructions that comes with the box were so simple, that it tells you nothing except to unplug the device to do the reinstall. The menu said black and white that the scanner supports Windows 98. Later on I realized that my firend's laptop is running Windows 98 Second Edition, while mines is only the first release of Win 98! This made the whole difference! I tried to download from Canon website. The results were the same. Finally I had the conclusion that the device driver is NOT compatible with Win 98 first edition. At that time, I had wasted a whole week of my leisure time! Not to mention I had to return the item ...

Summary: Exceeded All Expectations
Review: This is a great little scanner. And I do mean little; I was simply amazed at the small size of the unit. In fact, I have taken it on a couple road trips. In addition to the size, the fact that it only requires the USB cable is a real boon. Power is supplied via the USB port so I only needed one cable for power and signal. Too cool. And this worked perfectly with either the Mac G4 Cube or iceBook that I have. And despite what I had read, I found it to be realtively quiet. Certainly it is a vast improvement over my ancient Microtek unit. Incredibly portable, fairly rugged, great images -- it's just a real gem.

The Software is also simple and pretty powerful. I love being able to start a scan by pressing the button on the scanner OR from within the software. That's hardware integration that works! With the included Photoshop LE, I was able to monkey around with some photographs and get just sterling results. The included OCR software is good, but I find that given its limited accuracy I am better off (read that as meaning that it is quicker with less input from me) just doing a quick scan of class notes and keeping them in that format.

I knew that my old scanner was well past its prime, but I am pleasantly pleased at how much things have improved. I highly recommend this scanner.

Summary: excellent scanner
Review: This is a great little scanner. However; I started with the Canon 950u and upgraded. I can't tell the differences for most general scanning. I use this thing to go paperless. I highly recommend getting a copy of paperport software. It kills the oem stuff. I have bought about 5 scanners in the last 8 years. These are the first that seem really useful. I have thrown out about 4 feet high of papers and mags and scanned them in . I plan to archive them on cd-rw. I wish these things were a bit quicker, otherwise very impressed but I would stay with the 950u and save the $$$!

Summary: Awesome scanner
Review: This is a great scanner. I had it out of the box and was using it in under 10 minutes. Great scans - my mom (who is not very technical) finds it easy to use and is scanning in old pictures; the scans are highly detailed - to the point you can't tell the difference between the actual picture and the scan. Scanner has some real advantages - one cable for both USB and power. The scanner can also be mounted vertically, which saves more space (it takes up little space to begin with). Works great with MicroSoft ME.

Summary: Great Scanner - quality scans, small footprint
Review: This is a great scanner. It comes with good software and scans quickly and beautifully. I was blown away by how small it was, and it's perfect for the limited space I have.

Summary: Clunky driver, good scans
Review: This is a very good scanner, and the software bundle that comes with it is excellent in my opinion. However, the driver software is atrocious. I have original USB ports, a 4:1 USB expander, and a USB add-on card, all of these give the driver fits locating and then running it.

Summary: I love it!
Review: This is my 3rd scanner, and they keep getting better. This one is a quantum leap ahead of the last generation, with its USB connectivity leading the list of advances. There is no need for an independent power source, so anyone can install this scanner in minutes. The software is easy and fun, and most importantly, intuitive. I read no directions, but was able to complete my 1st (beautiful) scan 10 minutes after I opened the box. This attractive and diminutive scanner is a winner!

Summary: Will not scan objects, fuzzy at 1200 DPI
Review: This is really cool scanner, it's everything the reviews say about it. Unfortunately I use scanners to scan really small objects. This scanner has a small depth of focus. At 1200 DPI it's focus was even out on a slightly wrinkled twenty dollar bill. The scanner just does not focus on objects. On my old HP Scanjet 4P, and my new HP ScanJet 5300C objects are in perfect focus. Also at 1200 DPI, the picture was a little misaligned. If you can spare the desk space, the HP ScanJet 5300C is a much better scanner.
