Summary: Can this be love?
Review: My cat is bigger than this multifunction machine.

Unlike other users with Windows ME, I had no problems with installation--maybe they've fixed the problem with the driver or maybe I just got lucky. At any rate, total installation time, including wrasslin' with the styro packing and applying the panel's sticker, was 12 minutes.

Photos and color copies look fantastic, overall. If you squint and look for them, you will find tiny edges that are less than perfectly perfect on large 5 x 7 or 8 x 10 prints (I can't squint hard enough to find them any smaller than that). For such an inexpensive printer, it's truly amazing. Black and white letters and documents look just grand as well--really sharp, deeply black and very professional.

I use the copy function routinely to make copies of things for my portfolio. Bypassing my PC and making multiple copies has saved a ton of time for me, and it's already earned it's keep. I've made many color copies from bulky, awkward magazines, and each one has turned out crystal clear--in one case, the copy actually looked better than the original because of the matte paper I used.

Scanning, which I've never really done before, seems fast and easy. I suppose that someone who needs a scanner for professional purposes or film would need a fancier machine. Both images and words came through clear and sharp. It's not ultra-fast; perhaps 90 seconds for a full page of text and images. HP includes a disk of some kind of imaging tools. I've only glanced at it once and it seemed like it didn't have much, but what possibilities it did offer (like posting images to a specific type of online album) were very complete and easy to follow--they just not might be what you want or need.

It's very easy to operate and the button panel is totally intuitive. Refilling paper is a cinch, and replacing the ink tanks is far easier than it was with my old Lexmark. I haven't seen a single paper jam, and have used three weights of bond paper and two types of photo paper.

It also seems sturdy--the resident giant cat has been found sleeping on it more than once, and there haven't been any ill effects so far.

Summary: Missing some key ingredients...
Review: Yeah, it's only $100 these days (plus whatever you spend on a USB cable!!)...but, it can't manage to print a business card. Read CNET's review, and this was a concern of theirs too, can't handle cardstock type paper.

This one's going back...dissappointed as I really like the size/shape and copy without computer.

Summary: Lost with HP once again
Review: I am glad that so many others have good experiences with HP. It has not been my history and I will never buy from them again. In regards to the 1210, I can only talk about installing, I never got past that stage. I soon discovered from their support page that there is a tiny problem with installing to Windows ME. It seems you need a Windows patch. And you should have done that first, dummy. Well, I got the patch, still didn't work. I tried a few of their other suggestions, and then was told I probably should just uninstall and start again. They told me to go to Start, Programs and find the printer and uninstall with the uninstall button. Well, not listed in the programs. Gee, use the disk to uninstall. Fine, seemed to work, all the flashing lines looked like something was happening. Time to install: "The program has already been succesfully installed on your computer." After three hours of this nonsense, I packed it all back up and it is on its way back home. I assume that I still have that 500 mgb log jamb on my computer. Thanks HP for a waste of my time.

Summary: Good on ink use, LOUSY with PROJECTS
Review: Found that the 1210 ink milage to be surprisingly good for the starter ink cartridges. Printed about 40 pictures and lots of letters and its and still going strong. As others wrote, it does jam up more than other HP's and it is sure noisier than the one I saw in the store. Could hardly hear that one. Funny how that works..!! You can only print in black only if you take out the color ink tank but you keep getting an annoying message that you are printing in "reserve" mode. Not really a problem.

The real problem I had was I could not print any CD labels or any other kind of label with this thing. Wasted a whole lot of paper and labels trying to get it to "line up" my projects. Don't try to print any Avery business cards from their web site.

Also, if you have less that a killer PC, this thing will be like
the tail wagging the dog. It eats up so much system resources that you will wait and wait for your computer to set up after start up. The 1210 will eat up about 500 megabytes of space. Not a problem if you have a new PC, but if you have an old piece of junk, like mine, 500 megabytes is a lot of real estate.

It does print pictures quickly and had no complaints about the pictures printed and the copier function is really convenient. You can leave the PC off and make copies in B&W and/or color.

Have not had chance to scan anything yet. The 1210 seemed like a good idea on the shelf at the store, but in the execution of projects, it is lacking ease of use. I am already thinking of bring back my old Canon. Live and learn...

Summary: HP Hits a Home Run
Review: After hours and hours and hours of trying to install a Visioneer 9020 scanner on my HP Windows XP computer, I gave up and returned it. Having read multiple POSITIVE reviews on HP's new PSC 1210 all-in-one, I decided to give that a try. Am I ever pleased I did. SUPER SUPER SUPER. Great looking, takes up little space, extremely easy to set up. I was scanning, printing, and copying within minutes, literally. Both black and color are very good quality. My first scan was of a photo and, even on plain paper, it was hard to tell the difference between the photo and the copy. The cartridges are easy to install (their location is a bit awkward). Parallel positioning of the USB connector and the power plug is creative and saves space. Software is easy to install and use. You can keep it simple or you can be creative. I am more than pleased. HP has a winner here - and, it's affordable too. GREAT VALUE!! Color me HAPPY and PRINT!

Summary: Good Printer, but terrible software
Review: I recently purchased a HP 1210 series printer and was thrilled that I could get so such a versatile printer ... Unfortunately with this one, you pay for what you get. Before you even think about installing the printer you better make sure you have a USB printer cable, because they don't include one in the box. Also, buying some extra ink right away would be good, since the cartridges you get to start with are less than half full. After you have all the prepwork in you have to go through the tedios process of setting it up "exactly" as the instructions say or the install will fail (had to do it 5 times). Once it is installed expect constant lockups, failures to print and scan, oh and the extra load time for windows since the software hogs all the system resources during startup.

Summary: The sort of unit I used to dream of owning
Review: I am completely satisfied with this product. It is incredible that such a high quality printer/scanner/copier can be offered at such an affordable price! It is easy to use, and fast and easy to set-up (I was printing/scanning/copying in 20 minutes after I opened the box.) It has never jammed or otherwise malfunctioned on me yet. In terms of speed and image quality, it is also better than anything that I've ever owned.

I especially like the fact that you do not even need to turn your PC on in order to use the copier function- nor do you have to wait very long for it to warm up.

Plus, the cost of replacement cartridges is considerably less than that of certain lower cost competitor's models.

The only small thing is that it does not come with a printer cable (USB), though you probably have one of those already.

I am glad to once again own a HP product- indeed I am sorry that I ever tried anything else.
