Summary: What a Relief!!!!
Review: After the unbelievable week-plus of trouble I had (failing, eventually)to install the HP 5510 All-In-One on my Windows 98SE machine, I was really expecting the worst with this Canon MP730. Unbelievably EASY! The toughest part was all the worrying in advance - the installation went exactly by the book, "don't plug in the USB until the software is all installed", 15 minutes later I was printing a color photo (very nice print), then a Fax sent direct from a Word file (select as the printer "Canon FAX" and the window came up asking for the recipient's Fax No.) - The whole machine and software installed well, is very intuitive to use, and works beautifully.
Nice little touch: a cover for the (vertical) paper feed tray, keep the dust off!
The only CON (so far) is that it has a little bigger footprint than I'd like. It's not really Huge, just a little intrusive.
But for the price - or even more - it seems to be a terrific, easy to install, easy to use machine.
Hewlett Packard needs to take lots of lessons from the Canon software engineers!

Summary: Best choice for a multifunction
Review: After weeks of online research and in-store testing I finally settled on the excellent Canon MP730 color all-in-one. It has been named editor's choice in a few PC publications, so that helped my decision making as well.The first thing that impresses me about the MP730 is the appearance of excellent build quality. I previously owned a Brother all-in-one which broke after 1 year, and an HP which broke after 4 months. Since getting the MP730 I've put it through some heavy uses -- am looking for a job right now -- and it's holding up quite well. Judging from user reviews here and elsewhere, I feel good about the reliability of this baby. (knock on wood!) As many a reviewer has pointed out, Canon should be praised to the gods for allowing you to change individual ink tanks individually. WHY AREN'T THE OTHER MANUFACTURERS DOING THIS ALREADY? This alone is worth the price of the printer, as you won't have to waste money on cartridges that have to be replaced in whole even though only one color runs out. The automatic document feeder (ADF) works reliably. BTW the ADF is rated for 35 sheets but my experience shows you shouln't feed more than 20 regular printer paper; fewer if the paper is thick. To prolong the ADF's life you should feed no more than 10. This is just speaking from experience. I bought the printer with my Amazon Platinum Visa so I automatically got one extra year of warranty service. Still, it's better to keep the baby healthy than abusing it... The other reviewers pretty much cover everthing you need to know about this wonderful all-in-one. I just want to emphasize that although the initial price tag seems a bit on the high side, once you factor into the speed, the print quality, and the cost of replacing ink cartridges, this comes out to be quite economical in the long run. And it handles heavy-duty uses pretty well. Of course, if all you want is occasional multifunctioning, you'll be better off with a cheaper model like the Brother MFC-3220 all-in-one which can be found for under 100 bux here on Amazon. If you do a lot of scanning and printing and faxing and copying, this Canon MP730 deserves your serious consideration. Heck, just buy it.

Summary: Great Multifunction
Review: Even though more expensive than most competing products, this printer is worth the extra $$$. The print and copy speed is impressive. The print & copy quality is good on regular paper and is excellent on glossy photo paper. The fax quality is mediocre but I haven't experimented with the settings. Unlike some MFP's, the MP730 doesn't need the PC to copy or to send or receive a fax. I'm still using WIN98; the software installed quickly & easily and works very well. The unit is quiet and appears to be built to handle some abuse. The plastic seems to be heavier/thicker than that used on the HP's. The physical size is larger than fax or printer only units but it is the same size as comparable all-in-one models. The input paper tray is at the back of the machine so you can't push it flat against a wall but the MP730's output tray is slightly under the unit so the paper doesn't stick out as much as with the HP6110/7110. The advantage of the input tray at the back is a more straight through paper path which should result in less jams especially with thicker paper. The individual ink tanks should be less expensive in the long run. Depending on the volume, the initial price difference will be offset by on-going supply cost. Highly recommend.

Summary: Does it all, easily
Review: Everything works well - b/w copy, color copy, fax, scan, etc. The photo quality is excellent, but be aware factory settings may be wacky. It took me three printhead alignments to get the vertical spacing corrected - the first pictures I printed had horrible lines through them, now everything looks outstanding. I really like being able to replace the color inks individually, a feature standard on very high end printing equipment (like my office's $5000 poster printer) but not on most home equipment. The photo printing software included with the MP730 is very easy to use. I use Canon's Matte Photo Paper - very affordable and pictures look great.

Summary: Excellent Customer Service
Review: I agonized over buying either the Canon MP730 or the HP5510. The Canon was more expensive, but from the reviews I had read it seemed that Canon had a better quality product and better customer service. The bottom line, however, was whether or not I wanted to pay more for customer service. Ultimately, I bought the Canon but when I opened the box I realized that they had not provided me with a power cord-ARGGGGH!! I called them immediately and let them know what had happened and that I was definitely not happy, especially since I needed to use it right away. The customer service representative was incredibly helpful and express mailed me a new power cord (I purchased one from the local store in the meantime). In short, I paid for customer service and that's exactly what I got. Besides that, the printer is a dream! The color is wonderful; installation was simple. It's well worth the extra money.

I have used it to make copies and to send and receive faxes. I have made CD labels and inserts. I have been completely satisfied with the speed and quality of everything it has done. The only thing I have wanted it to do that it hasn't is scan an 11x14 document (the bed is too small), but other than that little thing, it's great. The software that comes with it makes scaning and printing a breeze. I was worried about the money when I bought it (the price seemed a little high), but I was tired of the space that my old scanner and printer took up, not to mention how slow they were. I don't think twice about that money now. When I finally have to replace the ink, I am glad that I will only have to replace what needs to be replaced rather than wasting perfectly good ink. I also like the fact that it will tell me when it is time to replace a cartridge. If you are on the fence about this, go ahead and make the investment. You won't be sorry.

Summary: Awesome Multifunction Printer
Review: I have owned a Canon MultiPASS MP730 since mid-May, and can offer the following review. I have used a number of multifunction machines, both inkjet and laser, and I think this is one of the best available on the market right now. I had been planning to purchase one for home use for over a year, but kept waiting to see if Canon was going to introduce an MFP based on the i850 printer engine (which the MP730 is). As soon as I saw this model on Canon's website in early May, I began checking online reseller sites daily. I purchased it from the first (reputable) vendor that showed available inventory. I won't go into all the features of the unit, but here's what I really like about the MP730: - Separate ink cartridges for each color - no wasted ink
- Extremely fast print speeds in all modes (draft, normal, best)
- Very reliable paper handling - no jams so far (I've printed about 500 pages to date)
- Very reliable document feeder paper handling - only one jam so far, and that was because the original was too slick and too small - Extraordinary photo printing quality, particularly for a non-dedicated photo printer. Photos printed on the MP730 rival those output on our Canon S9000 (considered by many to be one of the best inkjet photo printers) and Canon S800 printers. - It is a true multi-function unit. I have used other MFPs that don't multi-task at all (like the HP LaserJet 3200, which can't print or scan while it's receiving a fax). Our MP730 has had not had any trouble printing and faxing or printing and scanning at the same time. What I don't like: - Automatic document feeder (ADF) speed is not a fast as I'd like. It takes about 6-8 seconds to scan in a page of text at 200 dpi. That's not too bad, actually, but I've used a Brother MFP (MFC-8600) that took only 2-3 seconds to scan at that resolution. Unless you are going to routinely batch-scan hundreds of documents, this shouldn't be a problem. - The size of the photos on the contact sheet are too small. This function is used to print out some or all of the photos on a memory card (CF, SmartMedia, Memory Stick, MMC, SD - it reads them all with the built-in card reader on the front). The thumbnail prints are about 5/8" x 3/4" (1.5cm x 2cm) and are fine for general identification, but not for critical comparisons. For some, this won't be a problem, especially if you like getting 70 contact prints on a letter-sized sheet of paper. - No automatic duplexing accessory option. This is understandable, given the location of the paper tray, but it would still be a nice feature, and it is offered on the OJ7xxx series (the MP730's only real competition when comparing their feature sets). The print driver does allow for manual duplexing, however. - The footprint is a little larger than I'd like, as its depth is almost 23", mainly due to the paper tray on the rear. But I consider that a small trade-off for the increased paper feed reliability. Another reason for finally purchasing an MFP was because our old HP DeskJet 722C (five years old) has decided to stop printing yellow. We used it for all our general-purpose printing and use the Canon S9000 and S800 strictly for photo output (my wife has a small home studio photography business). An added bonus from the MP730 is its phenomenal photo quality (for a 4-color printer, most dedicated photo printers are 6-color). Although a trained eye could possibly tell the difference in the prints, I doubt any of my wife's clients could. That allows us to use the MP730 as a back-up photo printer in the event she has a large order or if we run out of ink (not likely, but the S800/S9000 and MP730 take different ink tanks). Of course, photo output is superior on Canon's own photo papers, but we have had great performance from all of our printers on Ilford Galerie Classic and Smooth (gloss and pearl finishes), as well as Red River Ultra/Polar satin and gloss. VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

Summary: The Usual Canon Quality
Review: I have owned my MP730 for 3 months as of this writing. Previously I owned a canon 600 and 6000 color printers.
I like the ideal of having one machine to handle many tasks. Photo quality is good on plain paper and excellent on photo papers. Print: It printed well from draft to letter quality. Copy: I really like the one button copy function.The document feeder worked well for me be it a single or multiple pages. Scan: The scaning was fast and went off without a hitch to file or working documents. Fax: The super g3 faxing is amazing. I faxed a 16 page document in the ADF in about 3 minutes. As you can tell I really like canon printers. The reason is because they are well made and have been reliable for me. The biggest plus that really stands out to me is the individual ink tanks. Over the course of time you will literaly save hundreds of dollars by "ONLY REPLACING THE CARTRIDGE THAT IS EMPTY." Printing can be pretty expensive when you are tossing out $35-$40 cartridges when you are only out of one color. Overall I give the MP730 high marks fo the usual Canon Quality
