Summary: HP's legacy of mediocrity continues
Review: I did not buy this printer. I got it for free. I bought a v40 at Sears, and Kudos to Sears for replacing that HP when it developed "carriage stall". I'm quoting HP technical support (I know a lot of people who had a similar problem at about the same time I did). I just needed something that did stand alone faxes for my wife's use, and now that I've experienced HP, I would definitely recommend products by Epson or Canon (which I also own products by). I work in graphics and computer sales, so hopefully my advice will carry some weight. Most disappointing is the fact that HP continues to crank out printers which CANNOT load a piece of paper straight. I'm not even going to go into how bad the software, scanner and technical support from HP are here; this isn't a novel. On the upside: it does print really crisp and clear.

Summary: Works great... but
Review: This all-in-one works better than the Brother MFC 5200c. The Brother unit had several problems that we could not overlook and had to return it within 1 week. After much research, the HP OfficeJet 6110 seems to be the winner. We had this unit up and running in no time. The software is large and took longer than average to install. The fax function works great, and everything seem to work as advertised... Until we started to print takeout menus for the restaurant. For longest time I could not figure out why it always cuts off the buttom 0.5 inch on a 8.5 x 14 paper! As it turns out, the printer's margin is set at 0.46 inch! This just doesn't seem logical to me, if you can print borderless photos on this printer, why limit the margin to do any less? To me it is artificially set in the firmware to limit the capability. I do not want to buy another printer just to print another 1/4 inch on the buttom of the page. This is too bad because I would have give it 5 stars if I could figure out a way to decreas the margin at the buttom of the page.

Summary: Good, but liked Lexmark's X6170 a little better
Review: I did a lot of research on these all-in-ones, and my top two choices were this HP OfficeJet 6110, and Lexmark's X6170. I owned both for two weeks and as a result have a very good sense of their strengths and weaknesses.

First of all, these machines are highly comparable, in terms of print speed/quality, ease of use, size, and set up. Both are stand-alone faxes if desired. However, they each have little features that distinguish them, for better or worse.

HP OfficeJet 6110: Extremely noisy -- makes lots of clunking sounds during printing. Paper trays are conveniently located at the bottom of the unit. However, printed copies come out somewhat curled at the edges. Cannot use fax features from the computer to which it is hooked up (i.e. cannot fax from within Word or other wordprocessor programs -- This was a big disappointment, after using that feature on the Lexmark extensively.) Also cannot fax from another computer on a home network. However, it has a solid design, and a slightly smaller footprint. Has a "power save" mode. Can accommodate an optional 6-colour cartridge for photo printing.

Lexmark X6170: Has the ability to adjust fax transmission baud rate, which came in handy when faxing to older fax machines. Can fax from within applications on the connected computer, and from another computer on a home network. *Much* quieter operation, nicer, more intuitive keypad, with (refreshing) blue lights on the control panel. Also, a more interesting design. The paper trays are less accessible, and use a slide-out extender, which I don't prefer. No power save -- it's always "on". About $50 cheaper than the HP.

Ultimately, for reasons related to problems with static on my phone lines, faxing to certain machines was a problem. Lexmark's customer support was very helpful, but ultimately I had to return it and have kept the HP. Still miss some things about the Lexmark, tho...

Summary: If you have Mac OS X don't buy this!
Review: Currently (4/12/2004) HP does not support two-sided printing on the 6110 even though the hardware is available for this and it used to work until they updated the OS and the driver. HP tech support is terrible. They are hard to understand and did not know until more than an hour on the phone that the driver wasn't written for double sided printing anymore. Their advice was to wait for the updated driver (still not available though it has been over three months). Most of the features on the panel of the printer will not work in conjunction with the computer, for example the button that would allow you to scan at the printer without going back to your computer each time to tell it to scan to the hard drive. This is a major hassle if you want to scan numerous docs or pictures.

Summary: Poor scanning
Review: I wish to write to express my unbelievable disappointment in the scanning ability of the HP Officejet 6110.

The primary reason I purchased this MFC was for the automatic document feeder to automate my scanning. Unknowingly to me, I can scan faster by hand than I can with this device.

My issues:
1: Software

A) There is no way to save your scanning preferences. When scanning using the TWAIN driver, all scans are done at maximum resolution and color depth and then outputted at 1 bit if all you want is black and white. This makes scanning a page take forever, even when all you want is black and white. When using the WIA driver at least it will scan in 1 bit BUT the default setting is full color, 200 dpi, and A4 paper size. To change to "black and white", 150 dpi and letter size takes 4 mouse clicks and must be done EVERYTIME you scan a new series of pages.

B) The scanning drivers do not play well with PaperPort meaning you lose the ability to collate 2 sided document scanning.

2: Hardware.

The scanning setup is painful. The scanner head is docked at the far right. When you feed documents via the ADF they are rolled past the screen on the far left. So, the first sheet is fed in, the scan head moves over to the left, scans the one page, then moves BACK TO THE FAR RIGHT!?! The next page is fed from the ADF and the scan head moves BACK to the far left, scans that page, then moves BACK to the right. This is repeated for EVERY page. Why can't the scan head stay docked to the left and scan in all 30 sheets before moving back to the right (like it does when faxing)?.

In my tests, scanning with the WIA driver and using the ADF, it only scans 2 pages per minute. When I scan by hand on my old scanner I can do 3 pages per minute.

Otherwise it prints well and faxes well but as my primary need is scanning I will be looking elsewhere. I will be returning this and posing the above comments on Amazon, CNET, e-opinions and others to warn people to look elsewhere if they want an ADF scanner.

Summary: Simple, sturdy and reliable.
Review: I bought this to replace the nightmare Lexmark 4-in-1 that I had fought with for 18 months without success. The HP 6110 is a tremendous improvement.

Any all-in-one device is an ambitious undertaking and so far after 6 months this one is living up to the tasks --- all four. The only thing I was worried about was if my 5 year old Compaq with 64 Meg RAM and Windows 98 OS would be able to handle it. Well, so far after 6 months it is working flawlessly. It installed easily with my USB cable that I already owned and the HP print and scan program which has an icon on my desktop is simple to use as is the photo editor.

I used it this past Christmas to create about 55 greeting cards using HP greeting card stock which I bought from the HP web site. I had no problem using different size cards of different textures and the photo printing has been excellent.

I have also been impressed with the scan ease and quality. There is simply no substitute for a glass panel scan surface and this one works perfectly fine.

The only negative comments I might make is that is comes in only one drab color scheme which is dark gray casing with a light gray top. Hey it's not a piece of art but it works likes a champ. Also, it's not exactly whisper quiet.

Summary: Excellent all-around machine
Review: My home office space is very limited. So I knew an all-in-one multifunction was what I needed. I originally purchased the Brother 5100C based on the low, low price. But I was very displeased with the print quality of the Brother. So I sold it to my sister-in-law and went out and got the HP 6110. I chose this because of HP's print quality and the fact that I don't really need some of the bells and whistles like photo card slots or network printing. I was not disappointed with this HP.

Print quality is excellent as I'd expect from HP. I particularly love the ability to change out the black ink for a Cyan-Magenta-Yellow (HP 58) cartridge to get 6-color printing. The difference is well worth it. My wife and I used this machine to print out photos for our christmas cards. With the black ink and standard color cartridge, you could see the black dots in areas. With photo glossy paper and the HP 58 cartridge installed the quality was photo perfect to my eyes. Most of my friends thought we had reprints made at a photo lab. I find ink usage to be reasonable. I printed out about 100 Xmas photos with ink left over. Plus ink prices are actually reasonable considering how much older HP models and many Epson ink cost. The copy function works very well and is pretty much idiot-proof. The fax part is a real bonus. Pretty much straightforward fax features. The only part somewhat lacking is the scanner part. It works fine for most folks, but scanning photos is subpar with the image looking flat and with little life (hence my reason for only 4 stars). But I suspect most professionals that require high quality scans would most likely not be in the market for an all-in-one anyway so this is a reasonable trade off.

Definitely would recommend this unit. Though there may be cheaper multifunctions out there I truly believe this one is worth it. The last printer I may ever need to buy with the added bonus of having copy, scan, and fax capabilities all rolled into one.

Summary: Dr. Jeckyll & Mr. HP....
Review: Mixed emotions was once described as "seeing your mother-in-law going over the cliff in your brand new Cadillac." Well, this printer has left me, after months of ups and downs, with very mixed emotions.

When it worked, it was impeccable. The print quality was exceptional. The sheet feeder made faxing legal size docs effortless and fast. The ink cartridges, which I refill rather than replace, lasted longer than most inkjets. Business cards, postcards, glossy greeting cards, photos, faxes, copying, all perfect. Or was it?

Without warning, items sent to print just WOULDN'T. I couldn't clear the printer without restarting my computer, assuming that it didn't cause my usually stable computers (yes, I tried both) to crash. The problem, according to the troubleshooting guide at HP's website, is driver problems when used with Windows 98. While they were aware of the problem (even the salespeople who took it back knew about the problem) no fix is available, other than to get XP, I guess. The live tech support folks in Canada or India were very nice but they just basically just held my hand while I uninstalled and re-installed the software repeatedly trying to get it to work properly. By the way, the software doesn't even properly uninstall to reinstall without a "scrubber" program they email to you or that you can download from their website.

Why a company would do this is beyond me. A multi-function user isn't typically a cutting edge sort of techie-they're like me, using it to do the work of 4 machines in a home office or small business. I would assume I'm not the only person out there that is doing fine with Windows '98 and that might not want to get into major upgrades just to have an HP printer. Incidentally, I purchased a very inexpensive HP V3520 printer while this was all going on and it works just fine, as does the Lexmark 6170 that I replaced the HP 6110 with.

I will write a review of the Lexmark soon, but I like the construction of the HP better, the footprint is smaller, less edgy, etc., but the Lexmark WORKS every time, so I'll keep it!

Summary: Dont buy the HP 6110!!!!!
Review: I couldn't be more disappointed with this printer. I print about 50-100 pp per day and have to replace the black ink cartridge about every 2-3 weeks. In addition, the printer outputs documents in reverse order which is a real hassle with longer documents. Look somewhere else for a better value and more convenience.

Summary: AAAAAGGGGGG!!!!!!
Review: I would give this unit 5 stars from a fuctional aspect but ZERO stars for reliability.

I used to love this printer until it started having problems. The original until failed when the USB connection died at the printer level. The second replacement unit failed after two weeks, when the flatbed scanner stopped working. The third unit just got RMA'd with a printing problem. The documents only print partially, and then it gets spitted out.

If there was a lemon law for electronics, then this unit would take the cake. The only thing I can say, is that the support guys in India have no problems in sending out replacement units.
