GE 74290 Spacemaker Radio/CD Player

Review: A real disapointment. It replaced an older under-the-cabinet GE radio that worked well, but blew up after a power surge. It only gets a few stations, and even those fade periodically. Most stations are accompanied by an annoying buzz, whirr or whine. I have finally had enough, and am replacing it with a comparable Sony. How many holes can my cabinets stand before they collapse?

Summary: CD eater, not player!
Review: Beware of this product! I recently purchased one, and though it seemed OK at first, I soon found out it had this annoying quirk of wanting to eat any CDs put into it. A CD will go in fine, and it will even play OK, but when you go to take it out of the player, it's a gamble as to whether you'll actually see it again without a mess of trouble. In one case, my CD got stuck *way* in the back of the unit, and I had to *remove* the whole unit from underneath the cupboard to which it was mounted, turn the thing upside down, and *shake* it to get the CD to come back out. Needless to say, one shouldn't have these kinds of problems with a player that's designed to be permanently mounted to a surface. If you must buy this, make sure there's a good return policy in place! GE really screwed up this one.

Summary: The Humming Radio
Review: Bought the GE spacemaker CD player for my wife for Christmas 2002. Prior to installing, tried unit on counter top. CD worked/sounded fine but the radio (both FM and AM) had a loud 'hollow' whirring sound. Too annoying to listen to, so I will be returning this unit. Interesting that another person posting a review had the exact same problem! I think I will drop GE an email to let them know that there is obviously a flaw with the radio's tuner.

Review: I couldn't be more pleased with this new under-counter radio complete with CD player and counter light. I thought the price was excellent and was pleased that cost to mail was free. Can't beat that! Installation was no problem - I did it myself using the easy to follow instructions. I am able to pick up many stations and the sound quality is just fine for me.

Summary: I finally have my music in the Kitchen
Review: I feel bad that a previous reviewer doesn't like his. I love mine. I have used it daily since May 2000 and have not had a CD eaten yet! I finally have my music in the kitchen with me. I love having a radio in the kitchen since my stereo is in the living room with the kids TV. I was missing out on my morning DJ and my Holiday CDs. Now I can enjoy my music while the kids watch TV. The sound is great. I love the light too. It's great for illuminating my counter top and at night I use the nightlight feature.

Review: I installed this in my kitchen, and use it often. While it's not a heavy duty stereo, it does very well to keep my kitchen lively. The features are great, cd, am/fm radio, counter light with adjustable dimmer, etc. It takes up no space, hangs only 3 or four inches from a cabinet, and is easy to install with a screwdriver (easiest if you pre-drill holes into your cabinet) Any one who spends a lot of time in the kitchen, and likes music will love this!

Review: I love my new spacemaker! It was very easy to install! I have white cabinets and it compliments them beautifully. The speaker clarity is great, it picks up the local stations great, and the cd player is awesome. Wonderful present for yourself.

Summary: A Christmas Gift
Review: I was totally surprised when I opened my Christmas gift from my husband and it was a GE Spacemaker Radio/CD Player. We did not have a radio in the kitchen. We spent the afternoon of our 52nd wedding anniversary installing it under one of our cabinets. Even though the Spacemaker is small, the sound of both the radio and CD is fantastic. I especially like the light for the counters. We are now planning to get one for my sister and her husband for a housewarming gift when their new home is completed.
