Sangean SG-622 12 Band AM/FM/Short Wave Receiver

Summary: real quality for the price!
Review: I have been looking for a short wave receiver for over two months. I went to all the normal places one would go to buy a small radio. I won't mention any names! Most of the franchised electronic stores do not even know what shortwave is. When I finally did find one, the lowest cost unit was $100.00 at a "radio" store. I finally gave up until I found a link on Alex Jones's website to Amazon and was able to order the Sangean SG-622 and in two days I have it, I can't believe the sound and quality of this unit at one third the cost and I didn't even have to leave the house! Listening to shortwave has opened a whole new way of getting my news and information.

Summary: Listen to the World from out on the Farm
Review: I was very skeptical about a $30 shortwave, so I bought the $10 wind up antenna for it which does make the reception better. I live "way out" in the country (which is probably why I get better reception than someone in a city) and I can listen to stations from around the world. BBC World Service, Voice of America, others from Australia, China, Russia, South America, Europe, Canada, Middle East (though not in English)...as well as all sorts of Christian Broadcasting (including EWTN/WEWN). Listening to news from someone else other than American media helps to get a more rounded view of situations, as well as what works in other governments and what doesn't, and a lot of other things we might not hear about without this radio. It's been great fun. It's not perfect (is squeeky with the weaker signals), but pretty darn good for $30, though I do highly recommend you get the extra antenna and an adapter so you can plug it in. The radio, antenna and adapter cost me around $50-$60 total. Still a good deal. Reception is better at night.

Review: I have wanted a shortwave radio for quite sometime. But,was unwilling to pay the high prices for a digital one. This little compact receiver is everything I'd hoped it would be and more. It picks up all of my favorite am/fm stations and shortwave stations.Better than some other larger radios I have. I only wish I would have found it sooner.

Summary: DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY
Review: Don't waste your money, all I get is STATIC both indoors and outdoors. The AM and FM work fine, but that's it. Don't expect much from unit. If you want a TRUE short wave receiver, buy a Grundig or Sony.

Summary: One of the best of its class
Review: This is a coat-pocket sized portable with a very basic design. It can tune 10 shortwave broadcast bands but none of the ham or utility frequencies between.

Its performance on all bands is decent, especially compared to other small portables. It covers more shortwave bands than many. Sound is not great, but again, it's good compared to others in this class.

I would recommend it as a radio to pack along on trips. It works fairly well and can be had cheaply enough that if it were lost or stolen it wouldn't ruin your life. It would also be good for those, including the visually impaired, who have difficulty running a general coverage set with a digital display. Or for those who just don't want to.

Summary: Tough reception area...
Review: I bought this radio hoping that it would improve reception in an interior bathroom where I take my morning shower. I like to listen to a local news station, traffic, weather etc, but we live in a very tough reception area near a tower that broadcasts many foreign language (mostly Korean and Spanish, I think) local stations that seem to overwhelm cheap a cheap radios' tuning ability. I have rarely been able to pull in our (WTOP, Washington, DC) local AM news station, but this radio does a fine job. Yes, it does indeed have an AM band (labeled as MW), contrary to some reviews, and does a great job. Sound is quite good, and the unit is small, though not tiny, and surpringsly heavy for its size (i.e. SOLID).

Summary: A Sangean Fan
Review: If you have read all the user reviews, you may think two different radios were being discussed. My experience with Radio Shack's version of the Sangean SG-622 may explain this discrepancy.
This Sangean has truly excellent sound quality for a radio with such a small speaker. I also found its sensitivity excellent on the AM, FM, and Shortwave bands here in the Midwest.
After several weeks, the sound became distorted, and I returned it to Radio Shack to be repaired within the warranty period. The repairman replaced a faulty integrated circuit and the speaker.
It worked fine for several months, and then the connection between the tuning dial and the tuner came loose, and it was impossible to tune it. The earlier repair work may have loosened it.
In my opinion, the SG-622 is a very good little radio, but the quality control at the factory may be lax. The year-long warranty may help solve this problem.

Review: Don't expect much from this unit. If you want an AM/FM radio, then go ahead and buy it, but if you're looking for a shortwave reciever then don't waste your money on this product because all you'll get is STATIC indoor and outdoor. Spend the extra money and buy a name brand like Sony or Grundig. That's my 2 cents.

Summary: Yes, it DOES have an AM band....
Review: This little radio has superb sensitivity on all bands. You will be impressed by the high fidelity output from the internal speaker. There are 10 SW bands and an additional 2 for am/fm so there's plenty of content. Overall, the radio feels solid, antenna and knobs are good quality. It is powered by 3 AA batteries but also will run on an a 4.5 volt adapter (not included). Range and performance of this SW radio rivals units costing much more. A great choice for getting into SW and it's price won't set you back.

Summary: I love it too!
Review: I read all the reviews because I couldn't believe a shortwave radio could be so inexpensive. My father used to have a big old Blaupunkt he'd listen to at night. I thought I'd try this. Wow, exotic music from the middle east, news from Germany, stations from Japan, England, India. It's refreshing to turn this on at 5 PM instead of the American news. This radio is educating me. It tells the truth and the truth is beautiful.
