Summary: Excellent Value and Quality
Review: Over time I've owned a number of shortwave readios. This particular product is the best I've owned. Although it does not have a "tuning dial", it is not difficult to move through each readio band.I appreciate the fact that the memory informs me that I'm entering a duplicate frequency. The only obscure feature is remembering how to switch from 10 mhz to 9 mhz when abroad. I did not have the manual with me when I was in Europe, and therefore was unable to switch the AM to 9mhz. Upon my return, I found that the power had to be "off" when making the change. Oh well.... This unit is worth waiting for.

Summary: Are they familiar with shortwave?
Review: Reading the negative reviews for this radio, I suspect
that the disappointed writers aren't familiar with
shortwave. You don't get high fidelity with shorwave,
you don't listen to it for that. I bought this radio
to replace a wonderful radio made by Sangean, too bad they
didn't continue making that model. Reception, with an external
antenna is excellent for a radio of this type, with only the whip antenna it is about the best. The audio quality is the best I've ever heard for a radio of this size, it sounds like a much bigger and more expensive radio.
If you are new to shortwave you should get the current year's Passport to World Band Radio. You'll be lost without it or some other book like it.
I've got a couple of little Grundigs, Yacht boy 200, I think with dial tuning, they are excellent for the price but much harder to use. A bargain if you can find them for under $$.$$

Summary: Great all around - A shortwave classic
Review: Testing radio equipment is what I do. From my perspective the YB400 is truly a classic that I judge other world band portables by. It is a solid performer on all bands . I'm very particular about both the LW reception and the SW Ham frequencies since my interests are in these areas. TheYB400 is excellent in both . Considering the price range I find that the signal to noise ratio is very good and the selectivity on AM and SW are also good. I must say though owning many Grundig radios throughout the years , Grundig has overall slipped a bit in the past ten years since shifting its production facilities to China . The radio is constructed fair at best and the sound from the built in speaker is only adequate . Although I find the sound in an outdoor setting is better than other portables . The quality of the tuner however is still very good . Grundig also supplies a wire antenna which greatly adds to the SW reception . You really can't go wrong with this radio . I would certainly recommend it to a wide variety of listeners.

Summary: Boy what a radio!
Review: The more I see of other designs, the better I like this one, and I've owned one for years. The YB400 is an efficient device without needless complexity. Sensitivity and selectivity on both SW and MW let me receive stations other sets can't even DETECT when compared side-by-side. The antenna jack and selectable bandwidth help too. The only fault I can find with this radio is the "back-lit" display that isn't - the four side lights make the information barely legible, where a better system found on some contemporary equipment is clear and bright. In other respects, however, the YB400 is a nearly perfect radio for the sometime DXer and it does a great job with FM too.

Review: The radio is okay for AM & FM Reception. It has good FM Stereo Sound. However, The main reason why I bought the Grundig Yacht Boy 300 PE Was for the Short Wave Band. The reception is terrible and often non existing. If you want this radio for travel, be sure to bring an external antenna with you. Otherwise look for a better quality short wave.

If it's on the air and you're in an area where the signal reaches, you're there. If you like to surf the airwaves, the up-and-down tuning buttons and 2 speed scanning (1 kHz or 10 kHz steps) let you sample what's out there almost as easily as with a tuning knob. The 40 station memories provide more slots than most listeners will need for their favorite stations. Like all of Grundig's better radios, the YB400PE produces remarkable sound for such a small package. No, it won't rumble the floor and rattle the windows like a Bose WaveRadio but it WILL fill a living room with a pleasing sound that won't tire out the listener. When you're ready for REAL listening adventure, explore the mysterious world of utility stations and amateur radio in single sideband. The YB400PE's analog fine tuner is famous for turning the typical "Donald Duck" sound of voices in SSB into intelligible speech. For listeners in Europe and the east coast of the USA, the telescoping antenna will provide sufficient signal-pulling power. For listeners farther west (or east-coasters trying to tune in stations from the Pacific), Grundig throws in a roll-up "clothesline" wire antenna. The YB400PE has 2 electronic clocks with a 24-hour alarm, allowing it to keep both local time and world time. Stereo ear "buds" and an AC adapter complete the package. If it's on the air and you're in an area where the signal is reaching, you're there. Store up to 40 favorites in any combination of AM/FM/World Band or Long Wave. Plug in headphones for FM stereo. But even without headphones, the YB400PE boasts that famous "Grundig sound". While it won't rumble the floor like a Bose WaveRadio, it WILL fill the average living room with a pleasing sound that doesn't wear the listener out. Summary: A distant second to Sony
Review: There really aren't many shortwave radios left on the market as everyone moves to internet. If you're planning to own one, you might as well get the best, and Grundig certainly isn't it. Reception is weak, no matter where you place the radio, and sound quality is definitely tinny. My cousin bought the Sony IF 7600G and I wish I had done the same!!
