Summary: Top choice! Watch for future compatibility, though...
Review: I used to work for a company that developed face recognition systems for biometric security. We tested many different cameras (Intel, Logitech, Kodak, etc) and found this one to be the best PC camera hands down. Then the camera was produced by a small startup, and 3Com was smart to acquire the technology. Note, however, that some people complain of yellow stains, perhaps now the quality is inconsistent...

Let me tell you about a couple of issues we were testing:
* Ability to perform well under different lighting conditions (side light, bright light, very bright spots in the image, very low light);
* Ability to adjust the settings to compensate for various light instabilities.
* Shutter speed
* Image quality

One feature that you may find amazing - even in a very low light (all lights turned off, curtains on the windows) you still get brilliant color image just using the light of the computer monitor!

Sure, for a lot more money you get some additional features, but this product does anything you will ever need and more.

A word of caution - I heard unconfirmed reports that the camera is not supported anymore by 3Com... Compatibility with newer operating systems may be an issue. It works under XP, but during the driver installation (95/98/ME/2000) XP complains about the driver compatibility. However, the driver works fine once installed.

Summary: Nice Quality Picture
Review: I have owned this cam for about 2 years and generally like it. I use it with Net Meeting and Yahoo and the others on the other end say the picture is great. for taking snapshots the quality is great. Keep in mind that web cam quality is largely dependent upon bandwith.

What I wish this camera had that the Intel camera has is the ability to import video from my video camera. Intel has slot in back of their camera for this and this one does not.

Summary: Great Quality, Great WebCam & IT WORKS with WinXP
Review: Awhile back a friend talked me into getting a webcam -- he suggested the 3COM HomeConnect WebCam. He had it and I must say, from my end, the quality looked amazing. So, I got it, and I wasn't disappointed at all! The quality is really good -- the cam self adjusts in various lighting scenarios and it also comes with some software that allows you to tweak the settings based on high light, low light, etc.

I had no problems getting my cam to work with XP. My friend, the one who suggested the cam, he also uses it with XP. The trick is to download the latest drivers (older ones come with the cam) from 3COM's website. Now even tho the webcam has been discontinued by 3COM, the drivers are still available on their site.

This is a great webcam, and it works with XP. The software it comes with, as someone else mentioned, is a little weak, but the cam is solid and worth the money.

Summary: No Windows XP support; otherwise, great camera.....
Review: Honestly, you might as well not consider this product since it's been discontinued by 3Com. The latest drivers are dated April, and you probably never will see another update. I used this camera for months under Windows 2000, and it was impressive--the picture was very clear, and it worked great in low-light environments. But since I upgraded to Windows XP, it's useless. There are no XP drivers, and the 2000 drivers don't work. Turned out to be a very poor investment! Certainly didn't help the reputation of 3Com in my estimation. No, I will surely take my business elsewhere. The very least 3Com could do is release XP drivers which would satisfy a reasonable lifespan for this product, especially considering it's only been around for a few months.

Summary: Never EVERY by 3Com again
Review: I like other customers have had this camera for some time. 3com's customer support let me know quickly that they will not support it for XP. With that kinda customer service, 3com will NEVER EVER get my business again.

Summary: XP USERS DO NOT BUY THIS CAMERA
Review: If you plan on EVER upgrading to Windows XP do not buy this product. 3com has discontinued this camera and refuse to support on Windows XP and trust me when I tell you it does not work on XP.

I owned one of these for a year and it was pretty good, but their tech support informed me today I will not be able to use it anymore now that I have upgraded to XP.

I will not be buying ANYTHING fronm this company ever again. I thought they were a reputable company but was wrong.

Summary: Great camera for the price
Review: If you're SERIOUS about webcams to keep in touch with family, friends, and... ahem... then look no further than this... It can light you up in a dark room with just the light from your monitor... amazing! Only drawback is small one which has to do with the software that comes with it... kinda primative... Other than that, it's a great camera, probably the best in it's class!

Summary: A very good buy...
Review: After looking at all the various web/pc cam available I decided to try the 3com model.

...I had no trouble whatsoever installing the software and realted drivers and all worked perfectly from the start. I was able to use the cam within 10 minutes of unpacking it, which to me is what a true Plug-And-Play product should be.

The pictures are quite good for a cam in this price range and the software allows plenty of adjustments, including brightness, contrast, saturation, hue, and more.

The frame rate is a bit slow and I was never able to use it at the advertised rates, but the video was still very usable for general web-cam streaming use, net-meeting, etc... ...

The focus ring is a bit "soft" but, it was probably made that way so that it can be adjusted wihtout disturbing camera orientation/postion. On that note, the cam is very easy to postion where you want it and it stay there very firmly. Though the camera itself is VERY light so it's easy to drag it down from the USB cable, so be careful.

.... My images have been consistently good: sharp, well balanced in both brigthness and color hue. I use mine indoor only and it works the best of all that I have tried (Logitech, X10, Intel).

The only downside for me is that it has been discontinued and I haven't been able to find the LENS PACK which include the wide angle, telephot and close-up lenses. Other than that, it's a very good cam and it's worht definitely more than you pay for it.

Summary: Excellent image quality! User friendliness could be improved
Review: I bought this camera after reading several reviews here, on CNET, and also by visiting webcam sites that use this particular camera. I heeded the advice of reviewers to go directly to 3com's site to download the latest drivers for this, and installed those first instead of using the CD-ROM. No problems on a Micron, 450MHz, 96 RAM, WIN 98 machine. I installed the software no prob, BUT be forewarned the Webcam32 software (to create your own webcam on the internet) included is *not* registered! You will have to pay for it if you plan to use it for more than an hour. I did pay, just because I wanted this specifically for a webcam. I'm not that crazy about the Webcam32 software though - it feels quite amateurish. Alas, it's the only thing I have, so I will stick with it. Apparently many other webcam creators like it. The low light performance of this camera is excellent. It self adjusts to many light situations. Even the largest image resolution is very clear. I previously had a Logitech QuickCam Web USB Camera, but the image was quite grainy on that, and it was hard to get anything clear in a dark situation. But it's user friendliness was excellent. And it had a convenient FREE membership to spotlife.com, that hooked it's software into Logitech's, which did all the work for you to send a webcam image to their site. (with a quick refresh time as well). I only wish this 3com camera had something as useful and easy software-wise. Also no problems with angling of the camera in the direction you want, as I read in another review. Perhaps I got an improved version? The cable doesn't weigh it down at all, and it sticks in the position you put it. 3com has discontinued this camera, so get it while you can for good quality! This camera is quite small unlike the photos. If you are just starting out, you might want to consider another cam for ease of use.

Summary: I will be completely honest....
Review: I had heard so many good things about this camera. So when I finally got one I was excited to get it started! But the truth is it DOESN'T soak up enough light. I don't see how everyone can say this. I have THREE windows behind my computer with a good amount of light pouring in but my camera still can be dark at times. The image is NOT that clear, it appears yellow at most times, and just the overall quality isn't the best. I had a VERY cheap cam before this one and I consider the first one better. For first time users, it isn't that bad to have but if you are looking for something really sharp and clear, I wouldn't get this one.
