Summary: Don't expect too much from it
Review: After reading all the reviews, I bought it without any hesitation. But I was totally disappointed, especially by the image quality. I think most reviews here were exaggerating its performance and I won't rely on the reviews anymore in the future. Let me give some objective comments on this product.

1.auto exposure control is pretty good in low light condition. Works fine even in a room with only one 60W bulb. But in the day time, auto mode causes over exposure.

2.Image quality is poor. I always see yellow stains on the pictures which are very disgusting,The hue is never right no matter how you adjust it. image is not very clear either.

I compared it with intel PC camera Pro which uses CCD sensor and only 10~20 dollars more than this one. Oh,boy! if you see that one, you will know 4 star for 3com is just too high. I recommand intel PC camera Pro to whoever wants a REALLY good web camera. of course, intel is not perfect either(redish hue, software not convenient, low light OK but not very good...,but picture is crispy and day time performance is wonderful)

Summary: Great performance and value. Unbeatable combination.
Review: An ideal webcam for windows 95/98 for the price. Excellent low light support and clarity of pictures. Slow framerates at higher resolutions are due to the USB connection, but then again, potential buyers should know that USB Cams are slower than PCI card Cams. However, it's got the fastest framerates of all the USB webcams that I've tested. I like the detacheable 9ft cord and the shutter button on the camera for taking pictures away from the PC. I've tried the Logitech Quickcam Pro, Kodak DVC325 and the Intel Create & Share Cams, and opted for the 3com Cam due to better performance. I really don't see any negative sides to this Cam.

Note: No NT drivers at this point.

Summary: Fantastic Camera
Review: This thing rocks. You can put it in a pitch black room turn it on sit in front of it and light a candle anywhere in the room (given the room is not really huge) and it will auto adjust and look perfect in a few moments

Summary: WebMaster Reviews the 3COM
Review: I got my first one when Vista Imaging (viCAM) was selling them. Now 3Com is using the viCAM technology. It is the BEST webcam on the market. I own two of them and the Lens Pack. It is the only camera, that I know about, that lets you run as many as 8 at the same time! I run two of them on my website. It works with all software (WebCAM32, iVista, ChillCam, ISpy, NetMeeting etc). I ran one of the first webcams on the Internet and have used many cameras over the years. The 3COM is the best camera, it is a USB camera by the way. It works excellent in low light. The Lens Pack (cost extra) is also something that I use (the wide angle is used most often). The first viCAM cost me a lot and now look at the great price from Amazon. You will not be sorry you picked the 3COM.

Summary: This is a great web camera, works great with Netmeeting.
Review: The 3Com USB camera turned out a lot better than I thought. It auto adjusts to severe light conditions where other web cams (even the expensive alternatives like Winnov) fall short. The picture quality is excellent and the frame rates are very good for a USB device.

I tried it on Windows 2000 using Netmeeting 3.01 and it works perfectly - just make sure you download and install the drivers from 3com web site! I didn't even bother putting the setup CD in my computer, opting instead for the beta drivers from the web site.

Beware that several users have problems with the software and driver on the CD. Also look to make sure your USB device is installed and compatible (download the drivers from the 3com site BEDORE you buy the product to use a utility that comes with the drivers that will TEST your USB system for compatiblilty!) My Toshiba had an unsupported NEC USB Hub under Windows 2000!

It's really a good camera, just take these precautions before you buy!

Summary: Dissatisfaction
Review: The seller didn't include USB cable to get the cam running or the software, charged almost $6 for s/h and he only spent $1.42 and arrived 13 days after the date of order.

Summary: GREAT webcam!
Review: WOW! I'm impressed! And I live in Hollywood CA, the land of people who are no longer impressed by much of anything ;-) I have several other cameras of various sorts. They're mottled, grainy, washed out, and in general just nasty. Heck, I'd even be embarrassed to put YOUR picture on it :-) But the 3Com picture is different. This thing has a professional quality picture, and the utilities have more adjustments than an Enron finaincial statement.

Even though 3com discontinued it, the camera, lens kit (wide, closeup, telephoto), and software that actually <gasp!> works are available from http://www.vividcommunications.com
My one gripe right now is that I can't get the frame speed high enough in low light, but I'm sure it can be done with the right tweaks (so anyone - HELP!)

Summary: Bad color, bad framerate, installs well
Review: I think peoples' expectations of web cams are so low that they rate things at 4 or 5 stars too easily.
This camera is lousy, and isn't worth $90.

The details:

Installation:
GOOD. Installed on a Win2k Pro SP4. No problem at all.

COLOR: Terrible. No matter how you set the controls, use auto or manual, or mess with the settings, the green/red/blue color rendition is always awful. Color shades are all wrong - either too vivid, too washed out, too green, to intense, etc.

FRAME RATE: Terrible. There are 3 settings for picture quality vs frame rate. On "high" quality, you get a nice smooth picture with so-so color, and a frame rate of 7 fps (I measured it). On medium, the picture is very grainy, so you can turn down the sharpness, which helps "somewhat" - frame rate is now 15 fps. On "low", the picture is downright awful, with grain, and jagged lines, and the frame rate is still only about 19 fps.
It cannot do 30 fps, nowhere near it, not at 160x120, 176x144, 320x240. Forget it.

CPU: Good. Uses about the same as other good webcams I've tried --- about 20% of a PIII 900 MHz to capture 320x240 at 15 fps.

LIGHT SENSITIVITY: Good. The picture quality does not degrade, and the frame rate doesn't drop in low light, and the picture is plenty bright enough. Unfortunately, the picture is NEVER good, and the frame rate is never good, so this is of little value.

Go try a Logitech Quickcam Pro 4000 or an Intel CS430 and you'll see what a good web cam is capable of.

Summary: I own three and run them on Win2K and XP
Review: Although it says that the camera is not Windows certified when it is being stalled, I have no problem whatsoever. I got the latest driver from vividcommunications.com.

I have no idea why some people report low-light problem or color problems but this camera is the best that I've used in term of clarity and low-light capability. I think once you figure out how to set this camera up, you'd enjoy this camera.

With interchangable lenses, the camera can cover a wide range of angles.

As for mounting, I went to Best Buy and got a pair of speaker wall mounts for about $$, which provides all the adjustment angles you'd need. You only need one mount for each camera but have to buy them in pairs, as they are made for speakers.

Good luck to those who are getting a webcam. If you need more info on the mount, just contact me.

Summary: Best Webcam I have ever seen
Review: I have purchased and thrown away more webcams than I care to
admit having purchased. This no longer in production webcam is the best I have ever seen. I hope someone will put it back in production!
