Summary: NOT GOOD FOR MACS!!!
Review: I bought this product to capture fotage from a vcr to my computer.
ADS has serious problems working with imovie and final cut. The image is choppy and skips frames.
I spent endless hours trying to fix it, downloading drivers etc..
I e mailed ADS customer service about a week ago and I have not got anything back from them. I have a Canopus ADVC-100 on order. it was a little bit more , but it looks like it has no problems. Don't use this if you have a MAC!!! Check the link to the forum below if you don't believe me

Summary: Great quality captures, easy to use
Review: I have limited experience doing captures from my DV camcorder to my PC and needed a means of capturing video from my old compact VHS camcorder. After 3 minutes with the manual and another 5 hooking up the AVI-550, I had everything setup to start working. This unit is very easy to use and requires no drivers on Windows XP. Just plug it in and it works (note: it comes with drivers for using with other versions of Windows or Mac). The quality of the VHS was simply outstanding just using RCA (no S-Video). The captures I got breathed new life into the old videos. I highly recommend this product to anyone wanting to digitize and create DVD's from a variety of sources. It is very easy to use and the ports are in a convenient location. It even has a 1394 (firewire) passthrough in case you only have a single firewire port. This way, you can hook up both digital and analog source equipment and just use the button on the front to switch back and forth. Also, you can hook up other firewire devices to the port and it acts just like to are plugged into your computer. If you think you don't need this because you have video-in on your video card, think again. I have used a video card with input as well as a hardware video codec for capture. This product far exceeds both of those. In my opinion, this is a great piece, especially for the cost.

Summary: Does not work as advertised
Review: This product cannot reliably capture from an analog video source. It will skip frames every so often. DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT if you are capturing an analog video source such as VHS. ADS knows about the problem but has not yet fixed it. If you are capturing from a digital source such as TiVo or a DVD, this product can do that.

Summary: Does not work with analog video source
Review: This product does NOT work as advertised. Do not buy this if you want to capture anything from an analog video source, such as from a VHS VCR. It will skip frames seemingly at random.

It does capture nicely from digital sources though such as TiVo or a DVD.

Summary: WARNING! ADS IS NOT COMPATIBLE WITH NEW APPLE SOFTWARE!
Review: This review is simple to write because all I was able to do with this cheap analog-digital converter was take it out of the box (which is very cheap packaging by the way!) and plug it in to my PowerBook G4. In Apple iMovie 4, it could not recognize the device. So, I called ADS and they told me "We're sorry, but currently ADS cannot support iMovie 4, Final Cut Pro 4, or Final Cut Express 2... Please return it and buy another brand." I wish I had known that before this! ... I rate the ADS with negative stars, to be honest! So, if you own a new Mac with 10.3 or iLife '04, Final Cut Pro 4, and/or Final Cut Express 2...DON'T BUY ADS TECHNOLOGY EQUIPMENT!!!!! And if you are using a Windows machine, why are you using Windows-based PCs when you all know Apple is the best for video editing?!!!!! All movies produced, or at least the best movies are using Final Cut Pro...Cold Mountain, Lord of The Rings, to name a few of the many!!!!!!! DO NOT BUY THIS, YOU WILL SAVE YOURSELF THE EXTRA SHIPPING TO SEND IT BACK... ...
