Summary: Awsome
Review: Easy to set-up, no issues, my home is now wired with broadband. I now surf the internet from anywhere and have access to my home pc.

Summary: Reliable, Easy, Secure, Quick
Review: This is a great Router. Although installing it was tricky at first, it was relatively easy to install. My network runs fast and is reliable thanks to this router.

Summary: At Least it is Easy to Install / Configure...
Review: It's a good thing that it is, because I have to keep doing it. I got my first RT314 about 1 year ago. After messing with it for a few hours, I had to take it back - it would not make a WAN connection. The exchanged unit plugged into the network and worked after minor configuration changes, which were easy to do via telnet or the browser-based configuration utility. Since then, I have had to reload the factory default configurations via ftp several times. For unknown reasons, after working well for a while, the unit would lose connection with the WAN and then would fail to get a good IP address from my ISP. Nothing short of reloading the unit's ROM would do any good. The Netgear web site was not helpful, the 'ask a question' portion would not find any relevant responses. Something else out there has got to be better...

Summary: Useless
Review: I tried to help a friend configure this router for their home but failed. It had the easiest configuration screens I had ever seen for setting up but we could never get it to work and I've done several routers of different brands in the past with no problems. I tried calling Netgear tech support and was on hold for 30 min till I gave up. Web site gave sample config settings for the local cable service which I had inputed but still did not work. Also, the 314 has no off switch, and no master reset switch. My advice: get another brand.

Summary: purely simple junk
Review: Dont waste your money on this! Tech support stinks.
Its also not totally PPPoE compliant like they claim.
When my ISP went to PPPoE it put this router rt314 right out of buisness, and netgear techs could not make it work!

Summary: Great Router to Share Internet Access
Review: I setup the Netgear RT314 router up to allow all the computers in my house to use the same dsl connection. With the built in NAT (Network Address Translation) and dhcp server converting my home network over to a tcp based network was very easy. I was able to mix Win98, Linux, MacOS, and Win2k all using the same internet connection. Since installing the router I have never needed to "reboot" it other than when I did a firmware upgrade.

I would recommend this router for anyone trying to get a home network of up to 4 computers setup with internet access.

Summary: Unreliable in the extreme - And Netgear knows this!
Review: Router technology is more than a decade old, this absolutely is old hat for most companies. Yet each time I've complained that the RT314 is simply randomly failing (i.e. all lights are on and functioning, but apparently nobody is home and my permanent high-speed Internet connection is unavailable) they have suggested another upgrade patch.

Well, 3.25 was the last one, and I still don't have reliable service. The worst bit is the inconsistency. Sometimes it's one computer that doesn't have Internet, sometimes the other, sometimes both. Sometimes rebooting the router helps, sometimes reprogramming helps, sometimes nothing helps but the passage of time.

It is amazingly frustrating to have no fixes to keep the router working more than a day at a time. To date, Netgear has not fixed the problem, while acknowledging each failure with another update that should "make it more reliable."

After a year of this, I simply had to write and share such foibles and poor equipment and software results.

Summary: Easy to set up, Simple Administration
Review: This is easy, the average guy can set this up and the advance user will like the versatility of the administration page. The newer versions (as of the last 6 months) do have better advanced features in the web based admin page, the ones from over a year ago need a software upgrade, but this does not deter from the overall use.

Once set up, approx 15-20 minutes depending on how complicated you want to have your LAN be, it just sits in the shelf doine its job. I have only had to reset it once and that was do to my cable provider changing settings.

I hightly recommend, in fact I am looking at the Wireless version now.

Summary: Great home firewall solution for Cable/DSL
Review: I do InfoSec as a career, and I really like this product. I used to have an OpenBSD box as a firewall, until I needed the hardware for a test machine, so I decided on the RT314.

1. Setup was painless, there's both a Web and CLI/menu interface for configuration and maintenance.

2. Dynamic DNS is great, I can ssh into my home network from work, no matter what my IP address is.

3. Packet filtering. Other products do offer more advanced firewalling, some even application layer-proxies with IDS. I don't really need this, and I suspect most home users won't as well. I have a default drop rule, and I occasionally open port 22 (ssh) for access from a remote location. Most IDS products need constant babysitting, as well.

4. NAT. True NAT isn't going to protect you from every threat on the Internet (malware, session hijacking, etc), but it is a nice feature. I have 10 or so machines behind the RT314 and they all share the same DSL connection painlessly.

Overall this is a decent product.

Summary: Easy Setup, then Forget About It
Review: Like the other reviewers, I have nothing but good things to say about this router. I set it up in about 5 minutes and was up and running.

A couple of highlights:
- The MAC address spoofing is a great feature. What this means is that you don't have to call your Cable/DSL provider to register a new MAC address (which they might hassle you about)

- I've been connecting to my company LAN with VPN software and it works fine with this router.

- The router has been running for months on end without a re-start. I had a LinkSys router, but found myself having to reboot and restart the thing constantly.

- For you gamers, Quake II & III and Half-Life/Counter-Strike/Team Fortress run without a hitch.

Hope this helps.
