Summary: Quick Setup and Operational
Review: The key words of fast and reliable made the choice easier. Besides when comparing cost the RT314 is pretty reasonable.

The web browser setup was quick and easy. If you read the instructions and answer the questions before jumping into the setup things will go without a hitch.

Summary: An Easy Fast Way to Start...
Review: Wonderful addition to the high speed home network. Great speed, easy to configure with web page setup and great for the more advanced user with the telnet connection. Havent had a problem with the hardware. Runs 24/7 without ever having to powering off. As a network consultant its an easy and fast alternative for the SOHO (Small Office Home Office) low-end, all-in-one market. Dont really care for the form factor of the linksys hardware.

Summary: Could not get RT314 to work.
Review: Out of the box, the router did not work. I talked to tech support and they walked me through all the trouble shooting steps. Finally they suggested that I download the latest firmware and try that. I did, still did not work. I am returning it for the Linksys. My neighbor got a Linksys same day my Netgear arrived. His works, mine doesn't. Boo hiss.

Summary: Support, what support?
Review: This product worked great getting the first computer hooked up. The configuration was simple and even a novice such as myself was able to get it running in about 1/2 an hour.

Unfortunately, when I called customer support to discuss issues related to hooking up my laptop they had no one answering the phones. Evidently, they're so backlogged that they are doing support on a call back basis. So much for having an 800 number.

Summary: Netgear RT314, Good Internet Sharing Solution
Review: The Netgear RT314 router is an solid piece of equipment that allows a single DSL or cable modem connection to be shared among multiple computers. The RT314 has a built in four port Ethernet switch and includes a firewall feature.

The RT314 and similar products use Network Address Translation (NAT) to share a single IP address. This design avoids extra monthly charges normally associated with having multiple IP addresses. This technique works well with most Internet applications such as web browsing, e-mail and even streaming multimedia. However, it can be incompatible with some applications such as video conferencing that may use proprietary protocols. The NAT function requires the router to keep track of all TCP/IP connections made outside of your local network. This function provides the side benefit of acting as a natural firewall. The RT314 extends this to include filtering functions that increase protection from hackers.

Installing and setting up the router was easy. I have been using it for several days to connect both a PC and a Mac to the Internet. I noticed no degradation in the performance of my system with the router installed. A site designed to verify the throughput of Internet connections showed my cable modem connection running at 1200 kbps.

I highly recommend the RT314 as a solution for sharing a single DSL/Cable modem internet connections among multiple computers.

Summary: Netgear RT 314 Internet Router
Review: The Netgear RT 314 is new entry into the field of home Internet Routers. Internet Routers allow Cable or DSL users to use more than one PC in the home on the same connection without the expense of paying an extra fee to their internet provider for the priviledge.

The Netgear unit features 4 autosensing 10/100 base-T ethernet connectors on the rear of the unit as well as a serial port to allow easy upgrading of the firmware in the device.

Set-up is easy. Just plug each of your individual machines into one of the network ports on the Router and run it's Web-Based Set-up wizard. The wizard will run you through each of the settings you need to configure to allow each PC on the network to access the internet. The Router supports almost every internet protocol under the sun!

Performance on the unit is great too. I detected little to no slowdown on the internet connection even with multiple PC's connected.

With the savings involved in not having to pay for extra IP addresses, this unit could pay for itself in a matter of months!

Summary: This is a very good product.
Review: I have had the Netgear RT314 router for over 3 YEARS and have had NO PROBLEMS with it whatsoever. The router has been very stable through tons and tons of use. I was very unfamiliar with networking when I bought this router, and the installation was simple (just follow the instructions EXACTLY!). I highly recommend this product. Firewall, DHCP, and LAN all in one. Great item!!! I have used this router (internet-wise) for both cable internet access and wireless internet access.
Note: Remember to tape your username and password to your router. I forgot to and it took me some time to find this info to get into my router.

Summary: Easy with good features
Review: I've been using this about 2 years now. It works great (though lately, it's been failing and I will likely have to repair or replace it). In spite of my recent (after 2 years of perfect performance) problems, I still recommend this product (or one of it's newer models). It has both a telnet and a web interface for configuration. It allows you to route up to 12 ranges of ports to up to 12 unique IP addresses on your lan. One awesome feature is built-in support for the free url service DynDNS.org. You can setup a free domain name to point to your home network. This router automatically updates your record on dyndns.org when your external IP address changes, so you can always access your home network from remote, regardless of what you IP address happens to be that day. There is a wireless version of this product out too. I plan on getting that soon.
