Summary: I Upgraded
Review: I had purchased a Linksys BEFSR41 and had a problem. Don't get me started on their lack of Tech Support. I upgraded to this router (RT314) and all is well. And they have Tech Support! This box performs just as advertised. It can be programed easily from a browser. Or for those things most people should not change you can do the advanced stuff with telnet or a terminal program. When I say I upgraded... only in quality not price.

Review: I was up and running in under a minute. Just connect wires, plug in power, reboot and your good to go. No real need to tweek advanced settings off the hop unless you want to run a server for gaming or what not. Great for home lans. The manual is lacking but the cd is has everything you need to set things up properly.

Summary: Highly Recommended
Review: I had the same favorable experience as most others. Setup was not difficult, the instructions were clear, and performance has been excellent. I like the security the firewall offers and find the networking of our home computers to be more useful than expected. This is a well designed and manufactured piece of equipment. I found the company's website to be useful and customer service responsive.

Summary: Good product, zero support, now useless
Review: My router was having problems with disconnecting. It is not smart enough to reestablish its DHCP when its lease expires, and it often loses track of the ISP DNS connection. I called tech support and was told (after 30 mins on hold) to load new firmware... using instructions on the web site I did just that. The firmware didn't load correctly, and the router gives a 'signature error' and hangs. I called back tech support, after 30 min. was told I was in the wrong queue and put in another queue for 45 minutes more. The support engineer was rude, told me that the information I was giving him was wrong, and said he'd email me a file in 10 minutes that would tell me how to fix the problem (he denied that there was no way to get the router to let me ftp in a new update... but we'll see about that). The file never showed up. I called back tech support and waited on hold for another 30 minutes, and gave up. I sent them an email asking for help, and have received no response. REALLY REALLY BAD SUPPORT!

Summary: works great, manual would help
Review: i spent most of a day trying to configure this router. the network is practically plug and play on windows 2000, but the internet sharing took some work. i opened the manual off of the cd and followed the instructions. no paper manual was included, though there was a quick start brocure which even now i find only marginally useful. finally, duh, i cycled the power on the router and the cable modem (RoadRunner)and it all snapped together. the pdf manual on the cd does address issues with RoadRunner internet specifically, but does not mention any other providers by name. now that it is running, it is a beautiful thing. highspeed internet on all computers, file sharing; all the goodies. other reviewers had absolutely no problems installing their routers, as one who did have problems and still recommends this product let me say: if you unfortunately have problems, there are three separate utilities you can use to troubleshoot. one is run off of your browser (explorer, or netscape. possibly other, i dont know.) another is DOS based; and a third is based off of a serial cable connection. although there is a disk included in the package, there is no software to install. the resource cd has the only manual or troubleshooting included. now that it is running, absolutely the best money i have spent on computers in a long time. just remember to unplug your cable or dsl modem from the power socket for at least 2 minutes during installation. this forces your modem to obtain a new connection that you can share through your router. probably whould have shaved about 6 hours off of my installation time if i had tried that first. i love mine.

Summary: 100% satisfied.
Review: I'm a software engineer and knows practically zip about routers and networking. From the earlier feedbacks that I have read, I was confident that this product would easily connect multiple PCs to my DSL modem - which it did. However, I also had a need to use Nortel's Extranet VPN software to connect to the work network. I wasn't confident of doing that. However, with the help of Nortel's tech support and from Netgear's tech support, I was finally able to do so. What a relief, I no longer have to manually switch cables. Now both my personal PC and work PC can be connected to the DSL internet :)))

I did have to make several calls to both tech support, but it was worth it. At least, Netgear's tech support DID answer the phone altho after some wait. (I had previously bought and returned a Linksys router because I simply could not get hold of their tech support to try to get my VPN software to work).

Also, when I was using Linksys, I was disconnected from the DSL service more often (just for the home PC) and then I'd have to re-cycle both the router and the DSL modem. With RT314, I'm noticing very infrequent disconnects and I only have to re-cycle the DSL modem (implying the problem is with the Pacbell DSL). Basically, I am really happy with RT314. With or without the rebate, it's worth it.

Summary: Works better for me than Linksys on Verizon DSL in NY area
Review: I installed this within 15 minutes (it was so easy to set up) and have my network up and running in less than half an hour. Compared to the Linksys (which I have returned to Amazon), I haven't experienced the need to "reset" the router every few days and the Netgear has been on for over 3 weeks now. I don't know if Linksys have updated their firmware so that one does not need to reset the connection but so far, I haven't experienced any downtime with the Netgear model.

For those who are interested, I used this for my Verizon DSL account in Brooklyn, NY and one of the reasons I set up my connection so quickly is because I didn't need to install Verizon's WinPOET and simply need to configure Windows 2000 Professional's Network (took a minute!). The transmission is a lot smoother (without the router, I would experience intermittent outtage) and I have downloaded the entire RedHat Linux software as well as Oracle's Oracle8i without any problem (and those are HUGE files).

Summary: Best way to share a DSL/Cable connection
Review: This router is the best way to share a DSL/Cable connection, hands down. All you need is a NIC in each PC you wish to share and enough patch cable to connect everything.

Setup is basic enough and the included documentation is easy to follow and includes enough pictures to help even the non-technically oriented along. Configuring Windows is also easy and between the documentation and included software, most users will be up and running within half an hour.

Once you are up and running, aisde from the obvious benefit of sharing the broadband connection, you also are functioning as a peer-to-peer network based on the speed of your network cards (up to 100mbps), which will allow you to finally play Diablo 2 multiplayer or share large files without having to use zip disks. The device also functions as a firewall and with a little tinkering, you can ban certain sites from being visited.

All in all, this is a must have purchase if you have more than one computer at home and a broadband connection.
