Summary: Great for people who love having a very unstable connection
Review: About a year ago, I purchased 2 cheap generic USB WiFi adapters, not expecting much. They did the job, albeit they weren't fantastic.
So when I bought the SMC2662W for quite a bit more money, I was expecting a superb product. I was quite wrong. This thing has given me nothing but headaches. On the startup of the computer, it will connect to the network (router is in a basement, adapter is on the 2nd floor, well within the range SMC preaches about), with excellent signal strength. Then a few minutes later, the connection will drop for no reason. It then begins searching for a network to connect to. However, until I unplug the adapter from the cord, and plug it back in, it won't find any networks. In fact, until I disabled some Windows services and installed some 3rd party software, the only way to reconnect to the network was to reboot the computer. I know my network is fine, and it's the adapter that's junk. Do yourself a favour, spend a little more money and get something decent.

Summary: XP Problems
Review: Be very careful if you have Windows XP.Since I installed my SMC USB wireless network adapter, I have been unable to dial into my ISP because the computer crashes eachtime Dial-Up Networking tries to connect. SMC have been no help. Uninstalling has not solved the problem. At least the network functions from time to time, so I can connect to the Internet over the network, as long as my notebook dials in (I have a wireless PC card on that machine) As far as I can tell, the drivers are simply not XP compatible. The network took a little time to set up. When it functions, it is great having the wireless connection. Using encryption drops transmission rates significantly below 11mbps, and for reasons that I cannot understand, it is erratic about whether it connects or not from time to time, especially with encryption selected.

Summary: Does not work
Review: Bought together with a router and a wireless laptop card. The USB adapter simply does not work. Software had problems with both Win2000 and XP. After downloading the latest version still no luck. Even though my PCs recognize the card, the utility that comes with it, does not find it! I guess you get what you pay for....

Summary: Would be 5 stars if worked with Windows XP
Review: Despite SMC's website touting Windows XP this product has no driver yet that will work for XP. Sales people will claim it works with XP. It doesn't yet. Very happy with it until I upgraded to XP (to overcome MS OS unreliablility, not that XP is as good as claimed) so had to maintain a second phone line and ISP provider since my DSL now can only service one home computer.

Review: Despite what you read in this review section, the SMC2662W wireless adapter does work consistently and well with Windows XP. You will have to call SMC, however, to get them to e-mail the driver to you. That's why they get 4 stars instead of 5. The wait on the support line was over 20 minutes. But once I got the driver, it's worked flawlessly. If only it was clear on the SMC website which driver to use...

Summary: DISASTER
Review: Do not ever buy a product from SMC. This adapter has been a nightmare from Day 1. I tried to use it on a laptop and it didn't work. Technical support could not help me fix the problem. (By the way, expect to wait at least 30 minutes before you get to talk to a useless person.) I'm now trying to install the driver software onto a friend's laptop. Same problem -- it doesn't work. Why is this company allowed to sell this product when apparently all it is is a plastic box with lights and antenna? And if you try going to the website, you'll get the drivers for another product. I have a product from Netgear and it works flawlessly... but I think any company would rate better.

Summary: Easy way to get a PC onto a home LAN to share internet
Review: I bought the USB adapter with a SMC7004AWBR Access Point/Router and another PCMCIA card. The system works well. USB PC is on the forst floor and the Access Point is on the second floor. I have one PC where the USB adapter drivers do not always load correctly, another that works plug and play every time. I'm very happy with this system.
