Rating: Summary: Good Solid Performer - Easy to Use. Good deal Review: If you are running a home network, or sharing an internet connection, you can't get a better deal than this SMC Router. It was very easy to setup - I had it up and running in 5 minutes, and it is sooo much faster than my previous server/hub setup. If you are already paying for broadband, its worth your money to get this router.I've been using this router for 5 months now and have had no problems. The firewall seems fairly robust - I haven't been hacked since. I've been recently moved to AT&T servers from my previous @Home servers, and I occasionally need to reboot the router but I think this is AT&T's fault because I think they are still tinkering with their systems. Hope this has been helpful.
Rating: Summary: Awsome Product! Review: This is a great product, simular products go for over $100.00. I had this thing installed and working within 30 minutes of opening the box it came in. Print server works great, allows me to hook up my scanner to my computers parallel port and the printer to the server port and use my scanner as a copy machine. The router works flawlessly, simple setup if you are not very computer literate. I have 2 computers sharing one internet cable modem, one Windows ME and one Windows XP with no problems. Don't waste you time with Lynksys, the tech support is horrible with them. SMC lets works with you if you have a problem, I tried calling them just to see before I purchased this router. Firewall is one of the best, no need to run a software firewall proram on your machine anymore, they just cause mor problems than they fix.
Rating: Summary: SMC 7004ABR ROUTER Review: This is a great product for a great price. Worked perfectly first time without any hitches by following manual instructions. Used it to connect a cable modem using a dynanic IP for various computers. It also provides firewall protection and print server functions. Works perfectly with Comcast.
Rating: Summary: Fine with one exception Review: Installation was a breeze, and system worked great with a surfboard cable modem and 2 computers (winMe and win2000) in a home network - this includes the print server, which was a cool add-in (I could print from either computer without the host computer being on). Installed winXP on winMe computer and I lost the print server capacity for winXP. Tech support attempted to be helpful, but failed to solve problem in getting print server to work with XP. I now have the printer attached to the winXP (main computer) and share using XP. This works fine as a workaround, but XP computer must be awake to print something. Too bad, because otherwise this is a superb product, and the print server is a great bonus to the home network.
Rating: Summary: Dial Up lie Review: If you think this product is dial up on demand like it says it is. It is not. The company told me that they misworded "Dial up on demand" when it means you have to manual dial up then can us it. So if you are planning on using this without a cable or dsl line, DO NOT GET THIS PRODUCT.
Rating: Summary: ez set up for complete novice Review: I was connected to my @home broadband 1 hour after opening the box no snags at all. Can't comment on support- didn't need it.
Rating: Summary: Excellent router, Excellent value Review: Just got this router, and it does everything as advertised, little fuss, easy to set up, and print server works flawlessly (i have hp deskjet720c). no complaints here, works w/ at&t for those of u who are not sure, and theoretically will work for most cable and dsk companies, because it can clone mac address, have a hostname (essentially a computer name assigned to your IP) and 4 switching ports are a sweet deal. I got it for 71.95 off here, lowest ive seen anywhere! great for if you're thinkin of hookin that 2nd computer up to ur broadband connection.
Rating: Summary: Too easy to believe Review: I was a little hesitant to take on the project of installing a cable modem, eithernet card, and this router, all at the same time. I watch professional network guys work hard to get things right. Well, this was a snap. Totally easy. Works great. Even with the @home fiasco, using DHCP fixed all of my problems instantly. Just restarted the router and computers and voila, attbroadband was still up and running after the switchover. The hardest part was figuring out how to open the case of my desktop computer to get the eithernet card installed. My only trouble so far is trying to figure out how to get NetMeeting video conferencing running - I must need to configure the ports some way, and have not figured it out yet. A pretty typical problem when you have a firewall, but it would have been nice for the documentation to include the step by step for this very common application - after all, this is what broadband is good for.
Rating: Summary: Would be great if it worked. Review: This product is hellaciously buggy. Stay away. To SMC's credit, their technical support people are honest with you when dealing with a problem, and go to great lengths to come up with workarounds for the various problems you run into. Unfortunately, the ABR router is so bug-ridden that SMC's great support just can't cope. Lockups. Losing your settings. Slowdowns over time until you reboot the router. Going to sleep for 30 seconds in the middle of a transfer. Needing to login twice. And on and on and on. There are 4 "7004ABR" routers, all of which need different firmware. Two 5 volt models, one for US and one for Canada, and two 12 volt models. Presumably because the 5V variant is a buggy piece of crap, about 5 months later SMC came out with a 12v version. This may be less of a piece of crap - but you can't tell which one you're buying until you open the box and read the fine print on the back of the router. Maybe in another 6 months they'll have worked out the firmware problems and this will be an acceptable piece of hardware, but in the mean time save yourself alot of stress and stay away. If you can find one, this router's predecessor the 7004BR is a mature product and works great.
Rating: Summary: easy to set up, works great Review: I am using this in a mixed environment (Macintos, Unix, Windows, laser printer) and it works great. Very easy to set up, provides me with a firewall, a switch, DHCP, and NAT for security. Great product and very low cost. I had to call their tech support once and the person who helped me was extremely knowledable. One of the best computer products I have purchased.
