Summary: 7004ABR Router, Works but setup was not easy
Review: I got this thing running after several hours of fooling around with it. At times I was unable to access the setup program. The setup would not accept my static IP number so I had to tell it I had a dynamic IP. SMC's tech support is a joke. It takes anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour to get through and the support staff was unable to offer any solutions and obviously had little knowledge of networking. They had no idea why I couldn't enter my static IP number and no idea why I was able to set it up as a dynamic number and it worked that way.

Summary: Fantastic value
Review: I have installed a Linksys router at my work, but when I saw the ad for the SMC7004ABR I had to give it a try at my home. The fact that the router included a printer port was a REAL PLUS. The router was easy to install. I did have problems with the printer port, but after a quick response from their tech support people by email i solved the problem. The documentation in the box is not up to date and the firmware needs to be updated, so plan on this. New Docs and firmware are available from the SMC support web site and very easy to install. I am very pleased with the purchase and the rebate is a real bonus.

Summary: This router only works one way.
Review: This router's only advantage is easy setup with web based setup menu. The basic setup took about 10 minutes (firmware upgrade and basic setup of booting router and booting your PC). But if want to run a web server behind it, forget it. I tried for the past 5 days with numerous contacts with SMC's tech support (they even elevate my problem to their Level 2 (don't know who they are yet)). The router won't enable port 80 to allow outside (WAN IP) IP addresses to see my web page. I ran some port scanning tools and found that port 21 was the only port that was opened (even though I had enabled 20, 21, 23, 80, 110, 119). The scariest thing was that I then disabled all ports via the router's setup page but port 21 is still opened!! This is no firewall and [...]

Summary: This one is a keeper
Review: I bought a Linksys BEFSR41, while a coworker of mine bought the Barricade. Mine didn't come with a print server, his did. Mine said that it supported IPSEC passthru, his did support it. In short, this is a better product than the Linksys and it costs less.

Summary: Astoundingly easy installation; Terrific Value
Review: As a person who was jinxed with everything from a brand new PC to a webcam that killed an entire computer, I am weary of adding hardware to my environment. In the case of this SMC router, the price, and especially the rebate, were too good not to try.
I received it at work, where we have an environment with simple DHCP. I tried it there and it worked within seconds of connecting.
Took it home, where I have a cable modem; connected my computers to the router; connected the cable modem to its WAN input; cloned the MAC address of the card that was connected to the cable modem and voila - the router worked. A truly remarkable value.

Summary: SMC7004AB Router
Review: For starters, this router worked 100% as advertised.

Documentation could use some help.

If you want to use the router as a DHCP Router and Static Router, you are in for some fun. However, after a few attempts, I got it working. None of what I did was covered anywhere in any documentation (printed or on the Web).

I closing, for the price, this little fella is well worth the money!

Summary: Trivial to set up and use.
Review: The 7004ABR is a great little piece of hardware, my apartment building is wired for ethernet, but only provides support for one computer, the 7004ABR came to the rescue! The only problem I had was the ethernet card (Netgear PCI) on one of my PCs wouldn't work in autosense mode, so I had to set it by hand to 100MB Full Duplex. Between the print server, the 4 port switch, AND the router/firewall this box is a steal.

Summary: BEWARE! - Great Product but don't have a problem.....
Review: I purchased an SMC7004BR in March and it worked fine until two weeks ago when the WAN routing portion decided to quit. Don't get lulled into thinking SMC's advertised 24X7 support is a reality and their lifetime warranty easy to take advantage of. I have spent over 4 hours on 3 separate occasions, at different times and days, trying to get through to their support to obtain an RMA (Return Authorization - to get the device repaired or replaced)for repair unsuccessfully. I sent an email to them requesting an RMA and was instructed I could only get an RMA by phone. I finally had to buy a Linksys router to get back in service. I continue unsuccessfuly to get through to SMC support. BEWARE

Summary: Excellent Router
Review: I bought this product in April of 2001, and so far I have not had a single problem with it. I have no apparent loss of speed vs. straight connection (as others have said about models from different companies), the firmware upgrades have all gone perfect, and the printer port is a nice feature that works flawlessly.

Summary: A great product
Review: I have been happy with mine for over a year. Lots of features, fairly easy set up, and affordable to boot.
