Rating: Summary: Excellent product, setup is easy Review: I bought this router about 3 weeks ago, and it took me less than 1 hour to setup, the instruction for setup is easy, speed is great, and I bought this one when there is a rebate going on. So, the final price for me is actually around $40. This is a very good product.
Rating: Summary: SMC7004ABR Cable/DSL Router Review: It was cumbersome to set up. It came with an upgrade of its firmware that you had to load yourself. The web even had a later version. The print server didn't work with my Epson Stylus Color printer. Tech Support said it was because the printer driver was incompatable and Epson did not have an update. Once I got it running it has worked great.
Rating: Summary: Easy to set up, works fine Review: FYI, I have never set up a router before. I had this up and running in about 10 minutes. Seems to work great. The documentation is written for several varieties of Windows, plus Macintosh as well, and is easy to understand. If you know absolutely nothing about networks, setting up might take 15 or 20 minutes instead of 10, but really, you'll be able to do it.This router has a print server (so you can share a parallel port printer among different computers) and a firewall to help protect you from hackers. It also has a serial port that can automatically connect you to the internet through a standard external telephone modem if your cable/DSL service goes down. (You provide the modem.) The router came with the most recent firmware (August 2001) already installed. The company's web site is fast and easy to navigate. I'm very pleased with this router.
Rating: Summary: > Sliced Bread!!! Review: I can't believe that people couldn't get this to work...it's a charm right out of the box!!! I have used it on SDSL and ADSL i.e. direct connection and PPPOE it's awesome, easy to setup and no problems of any sorts! It does everything they say it will and more...it even brings me my beer! Cheers!
Rating: Summary: An Awesome Product Review: It took me 2 hours to connect all cables, downloaded the latest V1.30 firmware, configured the parameters and brought it up. I have a PC, a Mac Laptop running side by side with cable modem. Speed is great and the Internet/VPN is smooth.
Rating: Summary: Awsome Product! Review: I am using it with a 3Com Cabel modem on AT&T RoadRunner network. It works great. Had it setup in less than 10 minutes. I used to have a Windows 2000 machine sharing the Cabel modem connection, but that required the machine to be left on for the other computers to access the Internet. With this awsome piece of equipment, I no longer have to do that. Talk about electricity savings. And that's just the router side. I also like the built-in printer server (WOW!), 4-port 10/100Mbps switch, and FireWall. The web-based setup is so awsome. I'm happy.
Rating: Summary: Customer Service?? NO! Review: We bought this router a couple of months ago and have had intermittent problems with it ever since. Our big complaint, however is with SMC's help desk. They never pick up the phone! It just rings and rings. No messages, nothing. I would never buy an SMC product again.
Rating: Summary: Mine just doesn't work, period. Review: I should have listened to the guy at work who got one and couldn't get his to work. (To be fair, another guy at work also has one and his works fine.) The set-up interface will not allow me to change any of the default settings. Oh, it will let me set the options in the menu, all right. It simply ignores whatever my changes are, no matter what I do. Since the default is to use DHCP (for cable access) and I require PPPoE (for DSL use), I am unable to use this device at all. Oh, and the "help" menu does nothing at all on the box I got. I suspect I purchased an item with a bad set of firmware. However, since I can't get this stupid thing connected to anything, I can't update the firmware. What a pile of junk. I don't doubt that some people get some of these to work, but I sure can't.
Rating: Summary: Absolutely plug and play! Review: There wasn't much more that I had to do. Worked right out of the box, connected to my cable modem, two PC's, and a printer. Great stuff!
Rating: Summary: It rocks Review: I bought this router early this year (2001). I've been extremely satisfied with it. Home LAN and internet sharing setup was really easy with the router; no sweat! What really distinguishes the SMC router with most of other products is its printer port. I originally had doubts about the parallel/printer port that came on the router. After using it for almost a year now, I'm totally sold on it. The setup was easy and it alleviates my home LAN from having to have a dedicated printing machine. I've tested the port forwarding feature by setting up a Half-Life server. It worked without problems. Although the server showed a local IP address (168.192.x.x), players on WAN could look up the server and connect using the static IP address of my DSL. Remember to check the SMC website for occassional firmware upgrade.
