Rating: Summary: an EXCELLENT product that is AFFORDABLE Review: I had bought a Lynsys prior to this and it was dead on arrival. Then I tried a product from Netgear. This SMC router is wonderful. It took 15 min to set up 2 computers. At first, I thought I received a poor product when I could not get to my email and news accounts, but the helpful SMC website solved my problem. With this product, you have the option of turning on or off the firewall and that feature is so important to me. For those using ZoneAlarm, you can still use it. I see no need for the print server option, so I've not installed it. As a Chemical Engineer, I highly endorse this product. It is effective and affordable. My networking admin friend thought I was out of mind not to buy a Lynksys. Wait till he see this great product!
Rating: Summary: Best 4-port router for your buck! Review: I was able to get my home network (of 2 PC's) up and running in less than 10 minutes, simply by following the accompanied instructions. My trick was use default values whenever possible during the web-based setup process. Make sure you download the latest firmware and manual from SMC so you are in sync with the latest revision. I also love the print server feature, which allows you to have connected computers share the printer via SMC router. Cool!
Rating: Summary: Excellent product - manual needs work Review: What can I say? Easy to set up and get running, works like a charm. (For those interested, I'm using PPPoE)Unfortunately, the "real" manual is a pdf file on the included CD - you get only a small printed "Getting Started" guide in the box. Manufacturers: We want REAL printed manuals, not just an electronic copy!!!
Rating: Summary: Firmware 1.3 Debug version fixed my problem Review: As I wrote before, my router lost connection after the lease time is finished. In other word, the router lost connection once a day. This problem is fixed by new firmware and now my router renew the lease time and kept conection. Ask for SMC to send you new firmware "1.30 Debug version", if you have similar problem.
Rating: Summary: easiest setup ever Review: I had this up and running with two computers in under 15 minutes. The only trouble was with figuring out that I needed to delete every instance of networking protocols, etc. in Settings/ Control Panel/ Network that had been associated to my DSL connection that had been going into one of the computers. Once I deleted the old info and removed my NIC from Device Manager, I rebooted. Plug and play set up the NIC card (as a brand new install) then I just did the super simple install for the router. Directions were very clear.
Rating: Summary: Qwest DSL and the SMC Barricade Review: To get the SMC7004ABR to connect to Qwest DSL through a Cisco 678 router, the Barracade had to be set up static instead of dynamic. Run winipcfg on your computer to determine the assigned ip and gateway addresses. Running static could be a problem if Qwest decides to change ip addresses in the future.
Rating: Summary: WOW! Review: This is a great product. Took longer to unpack than it did to set up. A++++++++.
Rating: Summary: Best inexpensive router on the market Review: I have helped set up4 of these. I have also setup d-Link and Netgear routers. This is by far the easiest router to setup and configure. If you use the Internet to play games against your friends then this is the router you want.
Rating: Summary: Cool Router, works with Serial 56K Modem Review: After updating firmware from web and finally from email attachment from tech support this thing worked great. I think they are still dialing in the firmware for serial modem support. Print server worked great and was sorely needed as I was running out of parallel ports. After getting the bugs worked out I am very happy with this unit.(waiting for DSL!)
Rating: Summary: SMC Router Review: I have hooked up different brands of routers and this was the easiest of them all. I had a small home network running in less than 30 minutes. The speed seems fine. Kudos for SMC
