Summary: Recommended Buy if on a Budget, but still want Quality
Review: I bought this because a friend of mine has a D-Link Wireless Router and I like to use his Internet Connection because I still only have a 56K. Since he already has a DI-713P I didn't have to make any configuration changes to my DWL-650 PC Card. Everything worked out of the box. I did have to change my network settings a bit, but the manual shows how all of that is done. Coupled with his DI-713P I get good signal strength anywhere in his home, even a little bit outside. Once I can afford Cable Speeds I will definately have this set-up, or whatever might replace the DWL-650 or DI-713P int he future. The sure thing is that I will buy D-Link ofr it's ease of use and reliability. I am a very pleased customer.

Summary: Incompatible with Win XP?
Review: As of this writing, there is no Microsoft approved windows XP driver. Dlink claims that the unapproved driver will work, but in my experience it didn't. The control panel shows it connected, and it seems to send packets, but not receive them. In fact, after I installed the driver for the card, DHCP stopped working properly on my 100-base-T card's IP stack. In fact, even after uninstalling the driver, DHCP is still broken. Not sure what's going on, but I suspect this card's uncertified drivers have something to do with it.

If you're running XP, I recommend before buying an 802.11 card that you check the vendor's web-site to see if their tech-support says something like "Windows will warn you that this driver might make your system unstable. But don't worry about that. Everything will work out just fine."

Summary: Good hardware, mediocre software, but a worthy piece overall
Review: Using the card with XP is a pleasure... once you can set everything up correctly.

The drivers from the website installed with no problem once I inserted the card into the slot. XP did its thing, and even connnected me to the access point, showing signal strength and all the good stuff. Yet it was completely unable to obtain the IP from the DHCP server, no matter what I tried. Setting the IP manually did not establish the network connection either. As a last resort, I installed the "drivers" from the CD that came with it (they did not have XP drivers, only 2000), which is actually a setup program that copies a bunch of files to the harddrive, including a control applet (made for 2000). Inside that applet (that duplicates a lot of XP features) I found out that my encryption is set to 64-bit, while in XP dialogs it is shown as disabled. I knew that my access point had its encryption disabled, so once I killed it here and hit apply, the card reset and the IP was obtained.
Signal strength is decent, the connection stayed at 11Mbps at all times, so the only real bummer is the software that is causing the difficulties in setup.

Summary: Works with Airport, but support stinks
Review: I purchase the DWL-650 for my ThinkPad T21 so I could connect to my Apple AirPort network and share files and the internet.

The good news is that the setup is easy and I had no problems getting it to work with my G4 software base station. The G4 will dial in when ever I need to use a internet connection on the ThinkPad.

The range is poor when compared to my ibook, but you need to realize that the ibook has a large built-in antenna for wireless networking. The antenna on the D-link card is just not as good. One thing that I need to keep in mind is that the laptop cannot be between the card antenna and the basestation. If this is the case my connection will drop off completely... even when I'm just 10 feet away! With the laptop oriented in the correct direction I can access the base station from two rooms away (25 feet and several walls) with good perfromance.

One problem: When I'm working without the d-link card installed and the ThinkPad wakes from being in sleep mode (stand-by in terms Win2000) I get 5-10 messages in a row asking if the d-link card is inserted. The message boxes only have an Ok button. d-link support never returned my emails and left me on hold for 15 minutes one day. I'm just getting use to clicking ok 10 times

Review: it is quoted to have a sensitivity of -90dBm. Yet, this card keeps droping the signal.
Good transfer rates but, it does not give a reliable connection.
(even when close to the antenna).

Summary: Awesome Product, Great Signal Range and Price
Review: This D-Link DWL-650 actually surprised me. I couldn't believe how far away from the access point I could go. I traveled outside into my neighbors yard. If this access point and card could go any further with connection I could probably share one Internet connection with my next-door neighbor.

Also with the range being this well I am glad to hear that the WEP encryption has gone up to 128-bit. Not only is it more secure than it was before, but now it is compatible with virtually all 802.11b wireless products out there.

I get enough of this whole no wires deal. I can't tell the difference when I surf the web from my wired or wireless network. With my Cable modem access I get very good speeds and I am glad wireless can handle it.

This is definitely recommended. Especially with the DWL-1000AP, they work with default settings and I get great range.

Summary: Some trouble with NT, but nothing that can't be fixed.
Review: I have noticed some people say this wont work with Windows NT, and I would like to make it clear that it does work, you just have to tinker with it. The problem is the IRQ settings. Windows NT is not a plug and play/pray OS, but all the other Windows are, not counting 3.1. So I had to change some IRQ settings in Windows NT, but my installation experience with Win98, SE, and ME went very smoothly.

Overall I feel this card is a great deal for under $100. It supports 802.11b so it is compatible with all other Access Points that are 802.11b compliant, they have a good range, good design, and D-Link said they are going to have 128-bit encryption (enterprise level) soon.

The Quick Install Guides are posters, which are very helpful in walking you through the installation.

Summary: 2 out of 3 worked great
Review: I bought 2 of these cards and the router initially and had no problems setting up and getting online. Shortly after that, one of the notebooks started having connection drop-outs. When I applied pressure to the card the connection would restore but it frequently caused the computer to freeze, even during the boot sequence. Since I had 2 cards and wasn't having any problems with the second notebook, I tried the working card in the first notebook and it worked perfectly. In other words, one of the cards I got had a defective connection. It was past the Amazon return period and frankly I was too lazy to contact D-Link for a replacement. I picked up another card later and it works fine.

Both working cards have been working great for months and I have never experienced any connection problems whatsoever. I have also not noticed any decrease in network speed compared to the land line. I recommend the card with the caveat that there seem to be quite a few poorly made ones out there.

Summary: Terrible Customer Support and Terrible Quality
Review: At first, it worked fine. However, after 3 months, it stopped working and I got the error code 10. I called customer service several times (>=4) and every time I had to wait for more than 10 minutes in queue. They gave me absolutly unhelpful advices: reinstall card and reinstall driver. Attempt several times, Eventually I got a RMA number to exchange it. They do not accept US mail, so I had to send it via UPS and it costed $8.(40% of purchase price). After one month of wait, I got another card, which looks like an old one. I guess they sent me a repaired one. Unfortunately, this one does not work at all!!

Summary: Blue Screens, lousy tech support, just not worth the hassle
Review: I'm on my second DWL-650, and still having problems. I'm running Win2k on a Dell Latitude CPi laptop. I've been doing PC repair for the last 10 years. Here's a list of the problems:
DHCP won't renew when the laptop comes out of standby (meaning I have to use a static IP, or restart the machine).
Windows crashes to a BSOD if I ever remove the card without stopping it first. Windows even crashes if I put the computer into standby, remove the card, and then put it back.
Tech support has told me that it's a problem with Win2k, or with my laptop...despite the fact that I used a DWL-610 on the same machine for months without any of these problems.

The bottom line: spend an extra $10, and get a better card.
