Summary: A great affordable routher that delivers
Review: It does deliver. It's very cheap, and installation was as easy as 1, 2, 3. I had never connected a network before, and this took me seriously about 10 minutes...that was all!!!
Now my family is able to get online with both my pcs at the same time, share my printer, share the cd-rom, as well as music & files between both of the computers. I am also able now to enjoy multiplayer games in a different level -- with my own family in my own home.
The routher is very easy to configure, and you just need to know the basics. It does have a bunch of features like port forwarding, dynamic routing, static routing, dmz host, dhcp, and also supports pppoe connections.
I have not noticed a decreased in speed -- I am still connected at a solid 1.4 mbps
For the beginner, for the one who doesn't need the extra bells & wistles, I'd highly recommend it. It's virtually fool proof, and it keeps your network hidden from internet attacks.
Ever since I installed the router, my Norton Internet Security has not warned me about any intrusion attemps or any port searches or trojans.
One thing that I would have liked better is that if it had come with a better manual -- it only comes with a setup guide that's very light on content, but still useful.
You can, however, get the manual online using adobe reader.
Another thing...To make VPN work is a pain!!! I have still not been able to make a VPN connection work; and I've seen many, many users having the same problem. The linksys website is not very clear on how to set it up. I know the right ports to open, but it's still impossible to do. That's one thing you might want to consider if you plan to do VPN connections. Other than that, port forwarding, dmz, and other features work fine for me.
Very nicely done by Linksys. Would have gotten 5 stars if the VPN was easier to set up and configure. Definitely gets 4 stars.

Summary: Works Great
Review: I just got this router and it works great. Hooking it up and installation was a cinch and I have no problems whatsoever. I only use it for my PC, PS2, and my Xbox but everything works fine. I can play Madden online while my brother plays the Xbox online and my wife shops on the internet with the PC at the same time. It's great. I truly recomend it for you gamers out there who tired of hooking and unhooking your cable modem to and from your PS2's and Xbox's. Also the price can't be beat! GET IT NOW!!

Summary: It Keeps on Ticking
Review: I bought a BEFSR41 router in June 2000. I've had it connected to 3 different networks at home and the office. Never a problem.

Just yesterday, 6/5/03, I had a problem getting my new broadband service to work through the router. I called Linksys support and, although it has long since gone off of warranty, they helped me solve the problem by e-mailing me a backlevel firmware upgrade that my outdated router could handle. I'm up and running again!

Summary: Great product, works out of the box, unbeatable price!
Review: For the technologically challenged, the product comes with a supporting software that helps you set up the system - or so I read :-). I was using a spare computer as my NAT firewall running Linux and ipmasqadm. Worked fine but because of security concerns that was pretty much what it was being used for. Then I see this router/firewall from a trusted brand for a price hard to believe and a mail in rebate!!! My old linux box is now running as an extra internet station! Took me less than 5 minutes to have the computers on the internet again, and an hour or so to port scan my network and tweak the firewall - installing the newer firmware solved some problems related to open UDP ports. Highly recommended if you have a broadband connection and wants great protection and good value.

Summary: Couldn't be Simpler to Set Up
Review: After having purchased and set up this device I read several reviews. I was disappointed to hear that a number of people have experienced longevity problems with this device, as it was very simple to set up, even for a networking novice. I'm hoping that these problems are flukes or that they've resolved the issues with the version 2 model that is currently being sold. I purchased this device after a bad experience trying to use a similar, though slightly cheaper, router from Belkin. I was unable to set up that device without intervention from technical support, and after finally getting it to work, the thing died the next day. By comparison, installation of the Linksys router was unbelievably easy. Not having run into any problems yet, and having tried a competitor's product, I have no qualms about giving this device 5 stars.

Summary: You can't go wrong!
Review: If you are commited to CAT5 and when I set up my home network, wireless had not fully caught on, Linksys can't be beat. Though no novice, it practically installed itself. I already had my DSL modem and wiring ready before deciding on a router, so I honestly believe total install time was ....say 3 minutes.:-) I've since thought of adding wireless access for the laptop and you can bet the brand will NOT change!

Summary: Easy to use, but has problems with ssh
Review: I'm generally pretty happy with this product, but ultimately I had to replace it with a Netgear FR114P because of intermittant SSH/SCP problems. If you don't use SSH, you'll probably be pretty happy with this.

Summary: Solid performer / horrible customer service
Review: I bought this router in April of 2000 when it was [$$$] and it worked right up until about 10 minutes ago.

I would recommend this as a solid performer with lots of nice features like 'DMZ' so you can run a web server on a de-militarized IP address. It's also been great at keeping any sort of snoops out of my machines. Say goodbye to Windows Messenger spam. Linksys also publishes firmware updates for free allowing you to upgrade to new features as their engineers dream them up....

Summary: firmware can be corrupted, unrecoverable.
Review: After one year of usage the router starts to have problems. First it drops DSL connection. Then it only works for one pc with static IP and 10Mb after 2 hour conversation with their tech supporter. Then their supporter suggests me to upgrade firmware. Their tech supporter emailed me the firmware, but it can't be loaded to the router. Then the diag light starts to flash which indicates an unrecoverable software problem. Then they tell me the router is dead and if it's over 1 year warranty I will have to buy a better one.
According to their tech supporter the firmware can be corrupted. After the corruption there's no reliable way to recover from it because firmware upgrade may not work anymore. I am not sure how their firmware (not hardware) can run into problem and why they don't have a good solution. By the end this is not a hardware problem. How come a software problem can be unrecoverable.
So be prepared to run into problem.
