Rating: Summary: Works great with Macs! Review: The Linksys hub worked just like a Mac - plug & play. I have been using the hub for a week networking a G3 & a G4 Mac using my cable modem. Once I connected the hub, I didn't know what to do since there were no Mac instructions included. After I connected the 2nd computer I took a chance & tried connecting to the internet & it worked the first time! I didn't have to do any configuring with TCP settings or internet browsers. I use it with Internet Explorer, Netscape & AOL. It is not possible to be connected to AOL on both computers at once even using different screen names, but that is an AOL limitation, not a Linksys hub problem. I highly recommend the hub, but I do wish they would also recognize the Mac consumers.
Rating: Summary: Don't worry, be happy! Review: After waiting close to a year for it to be made available in my area, I just got my cable modem installed today from @home. I had already ordered the LinkSys 4 port router.I was on cloud nine when the ATT folks left after installing the basic cable modem .. replacing my old 28k dial up line, but was a little bit nervous about messing it all up with the changes I'd need to make to my wiring and settings ... anyway, I finally read the one page "Quick Install" instructions, more or less follwed them, and plugged things together (4 workstations, plus an older LinkSys hub driving an HP print server and a LapTop ethernet card) -- the ENTIRE PROCESS took 25 minutes and it works great! This is one fine product (and a great price too.)
Rating: Summary: What a great great product Review: I live in the suburbs of New York, and had DSL installed in my house about 3 months ago. Having 5 networked computers in the house, I bought this Linksys router to spread the broadband joy. It was set up and functioning beautifully withing a half hour. Unfortunately, Flashcom's home DSL business recently went belly-up, so I went the way of cable. The Linksys router didn't miss a beat, once again being very simple to set up. I highly recommend this product for anyone wishing to share broadband in a house for a very decent price.
Rating: Summary: Works great, but documenation isn't so good. Review: I've had it up and running for about 4 hours now, and so far it has been great. Installation consisted of plugging in all the cables, setting the Host Name that @Home provided, and clicking on Apply in the easy-to-use Web-based configuration system. I have two computers connected to the router (one running Windows 98, the other running Linux) and both are functioning correctly. The only problem I have encountered so far is in the badly written documentation and online help. They (mostly) convey the needed information, but the grammar is horrible and incomplete sentences are abundant. Other than the problems with the documentation, I have had no problems and am quite satisfied with this router.
Rating: Summary: Does NOT work with existing LAN. VERY poor support! Review: If you have an existing LAN, this "router" will NOT work. Linksys'idea of a LAN is a bunch of computers with network cards. If you have an existing LAN with IPs for each machine you might as well throw all IPs away except one. The support was terrible. It took me over the "return time" to finally figure out it wouldn't work for my LAN. The support staff are rude and only knowlegeable about how they want you to set it up.
Rating: Summary: No Problem Set-up Review: I have to say I was concerned about the set-up of my Linksys Router. It went in in about an hour, including across the floor cabeling. I now have to get cables installed in the walls. Oh, don't forget to purchase cables, the unit comes with none. Some reviewers have complained about tech. support. I called just to see if it might be a problem and was on hold for about 30 min., a tech. guy answered some questions but the truth is the user guide told me all I needed to know. I think it was written by someone who anticipates problems and who also has a mastery of the english language. Great box for the newbie, plug it in and follow the directions and away we go.
Rating: Summary: Great, but one problem Review: As a cable router, this device does a fantastic job. There was only one problem you should be aware of, and it might not be that big of a problem for most. To reduce cost, I set up the router in my living room, so only one cable outlet would be necessary. Unfortuately, this device emits a constant high-pitched frequency not audible to everyone. I hear it, however, and it is extremely annoying when I'm trying to take a nap. If you have sensitve hearing, I advise you to set this up far away from major living areas, if possible.
Rating: Summary: Sending it Back! Review: I read all of the "It worked right out of the box" reviews and finally decided to order one. However, this was just not the case for me. I first used the Quick Installation instructions, then the User's Manual, then the Web site and finally called support - connected twice and was dropped both times after extended periods on HOLD. Just could not get the product to work. I took Linksys out of the loop and connected every time, so it was not the network cards, cables or the cable modem. Will probably go with a 4-port hub and security software, should save a lot of fustration. Sending it back!
Rating: Summary: Fast and easy to set up! Review: It was up and running within 15 minutes of opening the box and it works great! I haven't had any problems of "seizing up" or any other similar problems anyone's mentioned. It works just great for me. Definite 5 stars.
Rating: Summary: Makes my cable modem more stable Review: I love this product. It has all the fectures and more of software alternatives. ICS and Winproxy I found to a unstable alternatives. I have been using this product for 8 weeks and could not be happier. It is fast on thruput and can be customized. Do not bother with manual, upgrade firmware, read help files and online help for the correct info. I am a power user and love the control this product has.
