Rating: Summary: Overall Good- Yet Required Manual Tweaking Review: I have 2 computers. One laptop toshiba, and a dell desktop, and for the first month or so after I got the router, everything was working fine. After those first few months, the entire web connection stopped. I checked and made sure that the problem wasn't with the ISP or the computers. I found that the router "forgot" to set up the gateway, (192.168.1.1) on both computers. After manualy entering the proper gateway address in the TCP\IP settings dialog, it worked. Why I had to do this I do not know. If I find out that it was a problem with my computer, I will most defanitly change the rating to 5 stars, because it has been perferct.
Rating: Summary: It works just fine. Review: I hereby recind my previous post, which was posted several months ago. LinkSys received a bad rating because I could not get it working with Win2kP and Verison DSL. LinkSys still get 4 stars (instead of 5) for being less than accessible. They did answer my emails and calls, but only after several days, and their answers did not lead to a solution. Furthermore, they did not fulfill my request to schedule a call-back at a certain date and time to work through the issue. Regardless, the thing is hooked up now and works quite well. I recommend the site DSLReports, for answers concerning DSL and related-technologies. At DSLReports, posted a question and received 2 answers in less than 5 hours. Both answers were correct. I discovered that in order to work with Verison DSL, I had to turn on the PPPoe setting on the LinkSys router. After that simple adjustment, it has been working fine. I do recommend this product. However, I must say that it could be easier to set up and configure. It seems that plug-and-play still has a long way to go. The manual should be updated for Win2k and LinkSys should reconfigure their support so that they can be reached in meaningful ways. And so on. All that said, LinkSys earns a strong 4, IMHO. Thank you.
Rating: Summary: This router rocks! Easy to install and decent support! Review: The instructions were simple and to the point. There's only four cables for a two computer network: 1)power supply which comes with the unit, 2)the WAN cable from your broadband modem, and 3)one ethernet cable from each computer to the router. I'm no networking engineer, but I would say that it does take some computer savvy to properly connect and configure the device. After about 20 minutes of reading the manual and connecting the router, I was ready to give it a try. No dice. So I called the support line. After about 10-15 minutes on hold, a support guy professionally walked me through several procedures and we were up and running. In this day and age of very poor support, I would give these people a solid rating. In less than one hour from opening the box, I had a functioning two-computer network at home, and that includes the time talking with tech support on a Sunday morning! I tested the ping rate before and after, and if anything, the connection rate is slightly faster now. One of the most important criteria I give a piece of equipment is the question, "If I had this to do over again, would I buy the same thing?" And the answer here is, "Yes"! Good luck. By the way, if you don't have them already, be sure and buy an ethernet cable for each of your computers to the router and one for your broadband modem to the router (In a two computer network, that would be 3 ethernet cables). Crossover or uplink cable is not necessary.
Rating: Summary: Works great, as long as you don't have a Mac! Review: Setup was incredibly easy and it worked right out of the box on my Wintel and Mac. However, Macintosh protocols are not supported (only TCP/IP) so Appletalk devices like printers and Mac to Mac communication are not supported. Linksys tech support is a dicey proposition. There's virtually no phone support - took nearly a week for them to get back to me and when they reached me by e-mail all they said was a curt "We don't support Mac."
Rating: Summary: Small, Powerful Home/Office Router Review: We've had this router for some time now, and it works great! We use this in our office and we have had no problem with it. Our frequent Quake sessions have also improved. Great solution for any home or office network.
Rating: Summary: Works just like it should! Hurray for Linksys! Review: I'm a network administrator for a software company, so I didn't expect to have any problems setting up this unit. After a quick glance at the instructions (which seemed a little scant, but certainly passable) I was pluggin' and goin'. I was able to download a newer version of the firmware (the code that runs the unit) and configured everything in about 10 minutes. Couldn't ask for more, setup-wise. Perfect! Linksys did include some "glossy" feature-pages regarding PPPoE hookup (for DSL users) and such. These seemed much more recent and much more user-friendly than the main instruction book. Perhaps they will revise all of the documentation to look this good. After installation, I actually found that this router improved my DSL performance! Removing my PPPoE software (terrible EnterNet 300, yuck) and my firewall software (wonderful ZoneAlarm, I'll miss that great interface) took out some major processor overhead. For performance junkies like myself, I certainly *highly* this unit. Big time! In conclusion, setup and installation rate about a 4 (out of 5). Easy, but I'm not the best judge of that due to my experience. Performance and support, an easy 5. Go Linksys go!
Rating: Summary: Linksys technical issues Review: I like my router very much! Once I got it running, it was great! I had installed one and I couldn't get out to the internet at all. Finally, after some time, customer support did an exchange and after I swapped it out, things were great. I used email support this time and response times are measured in days (typically 1 - 2 days or less). I am now attempting to set one up for a friend and am having similar problems. (I returned the first one and swapped it for a later firmware version with no change in the problem.) I am trying to use phone tech support this time for this problem. Off hours times (when I have received an answer) were in the 45 minute to 1 hour range. Peak times have been over 3.5 hours (but I haven't received a call back yet). One of my local computer store service techs stated that "Once you get them running, they are great." I agree.

Rating: Summary: Super easy to use and no garbage software on your system Review: I work in technology and have for the last 10 years. There are two products that I have that really impressed me.... 1. TIVO 2. Linksys router/switch What it takes for me to actually be impressed by a technology product it has to be simple, (plug and play simple) the right price or better and be 99.999% reliable or better. This product is simple, just plug the darn thing in and it works. You only need to configure it if you want to do something a little non-standard. It has yet to fail me and I have had it for quite some time. If you need to share a high speed internet connection like DSL or cable this product is the best I have seen. Also in it;'s latest incarnation it supports PPPoE so it will work with any DSL provider out there without having to install the crummy ISP software on your actual workstation. Oh yeah and don't forget it supports NAT (Network Address Translation) so it basically acts as a firewall as well. One of the benefits of this system is that if you use DSL you will no longer need the anoying PPPoE software installed on your system since this device will do it for you. With Verizon I had to install the software as part of the account setup but once it gave me my user name and password I then put that into the Linksys and uninstalled the PPPoE software from my system. It now is truly online at all time since I have told the Linksys to keep the connection alive.
Rating: Summary: Strange quirk with advanced features Review: We tried this router as a simpler, hassle-free alternative to running our own software-based firewall and router on a Linux box. It worked great -- as long as you have a simple network and don't need to use the advanced features of the Linksys router, which are mostly undocumented (and unsupported?). We configured it to forward certain ports to a machine serving our web site, and that worked fine from the outside world, but if you accessed the forwarded IP/port from inside the network, the Linksys would repeatedly lock up. In addition, if you have a DSL connection providing more than one static IP address, this router will let you expose only one of the IPs. All in all, it's an easy and simple-to-use piece of hardware, but perhaps not so great for anything other than simple sharing of a single IP address. (We ended up going back to a softare-based Linux router.)
