Summary: Works great once you get it set up
Review: It took a couple of hours to get the configuration right. The instruction manual was very sparse on information and poorly organized.

The included CD has a lot more information, but still was not enough for a novice user.

I installed the router on an @home cable modem. The included documentation did not guide me far enough to get the router communicating with the network.

The Linksys website had two specific articles about configuring for @home. After following the suggestions, it worked great! Just make sure you have the order shipper from the cable company with the MAC information. That, with the Linksys website is all you need.

Router/hub transparently allows both of our computers to access the net and share printer/file recources.

Works great with VPN. Access to work e-mail is faster than using the corporate net!

The cable installer recommended keeping the router/hub and the cable modem on an good surge suppressor or UPS. Users who have had reliability problems may be experiencing power spikes.

Summary: Networking Made easy
Review: Simple and inexpensive way to network your computers at home or small office.

Summary: Fast and simple
Review: I found this product to be just what the doctor ordered for allowing clients on my LAN to access the internet through a single cable modem.

The physical set-up took about five minutes and the initial software set-up took about ten minutes. Had I not needed Laplink access to one of the computers on the LAN, the default settings would have been sufficient. Changing the settings is easy, through a browser window, to which access can be limited through customizable passwords. A basic understanding of networking principals is helpful but the onscreen help answered all of my questions. I didn't need any telephone or email tech support, so I can't comment on the quality of Linksys' tech support.

In full firewall mode the computers on the LAN are virtually invisable to outsiders, yet fully available to the other LAN clients (according to your Windows sharing settings). You can also allow one or more computers on the LAN to open ports to the internet by using Linksys' "DMZ" function, and the administrator can easily monitor the connections to ensure that clients are getting access.

I gave up on the software solutions, such as Microsoft's Internet Connection Sharing. They were too finicky and conflicted with the cable arrangement at my office building. With the Linksys Router there is no need to configure a second ethernet card in the connected computer or set the client TCP/IP numbers, unless you want to. The Router acts as the WAN connected computer and provides the router backbone for four direct connected clients. Additional clients can be added by connecting additional switches or hubs to the router, for up to over 200 clients.

I didn't do a lot of comparison testing, but I read quite a few reviews and the reviews seem to be true, the Linksys product is easy and quick and probably the best for the money.

Summary: make it enough
Review: if you are looking for an internet sharing utility, this works excellent. It comes with a DHCP server also, so you wont have to do much configuring. I had it up and running in about 5 minutes. Everything works real easily, but it is a bit missleading when it comes to how many ports you are going to get. I have a LAN of 4 computers and can only plug 3 into the router. One port has to be left open if you choose to plug into the WAN port. This is easily fixed if you have a hub. Plug the hub into the router (not next to WAN port though), then your additional devices into the hub (its another point of possible failure, but then you have more devices).

It wasnt apparent why my 4th device wasnt connecting.. I tried everything possible. Only after I realized that my working computers wouldnt work if plugged into the 4th port that I reazlized the 4th port isnt available when connecting in my configuration. SO I tried the hub, and VOILA!

Good luck!

Summary: Mine died too
Review: Mine did a little better than the person's who worked for 4 months. Mine lost all but one port in 5 months. The set up is great, but if it's going to die so quickly, there are better products out there.

Summary: A disappointing product from Linksys
Review: A real disappointment. At first I was very happy with it. It installed easily and worked well. But......2-3 times per day, it hangs. You can't access the internet, you can't access the router via the browser interface, you can't even ping it. The solution is to power cycle it, but this is awkward as there is no power switch. Have to pull the power cable and re-insert.If this happened once a week or so, it would be acceptable, but 2-3 times per day makes it basically useless to me. It's going back. This is unfortunate, as I am a fan of Linksys products (and prices). But I also like Netgear, so I guess I will give them a try.

Summary: Same as previous reviewer, dead in four months...
Review: I had the same experience as one of the previous reviewers. It worked as intended for about four months. Then it started going buggy for about two weeks. Wouldn't hold an IP address on the ISP WAN. After two weeks of constant resetting, I had blinking lights gone wild. Their technical support offered all kinds of help ... (4 calls being on until I jumped through so many hoops that they offered to allow me to return it (like I didn't know it was defective in the first place!) As a network professional (MCSE and MCSD), try another brand. The problem I had smacks of poor internal process control. Probably ESD damage that doesn't show up until the customer uses the thing a while.

Summary: Happy Linksys user
Review: I bought this router based on a very strong recommendation from a friend & I'm happy with that decision. Easy to setup. The internal LAN runs at 100Mbps. The built-in firewall is great for Cable-Modem & DSL users whose PCs are exposed to the Net without this firewall. It also looks nice. Won't go wrong getting this one.

Summary: tech support ? netmeeting? oh yeah....
Review: i have installed two of those linksys router and yes, they are very easy to setup. What the company does not tell you anywhere is that it will NOT allow Netmeeting even through the DMZ option. ..after trying every possible options, i called tech support at Linksys who after 20 mn of keeping me on hold took my name and phone # and then told me someone would call me in 3 to 4 hours (sic!). two months later i am still waiting for that call. Finaly i wrote to tech support and they said that indeed that router does NOT allow Netmeeting, even through DMZ. As of June 2 there was no mention of this in any of their FAQ on their site. So if your needs are simply to network a few computers with a good firewall, this router is fine, but if you want to use options such as audio and video...have fun trying to open the necessary ports or contacting the supposedly "24/7 tech support".

Summary: Works wonderfully with Macs!
Review: Mac users, don't let the Windows only instructions hinder you from buying this. MacWorld has a how-to page on their website. One addition to their instructions, the DHCP client ID number will now go into the host name for the router. The domain name must be there also, and in your TCP/IP control panel, you must put the DNS server addresses.

I have a 2 month old Mac, and a 8 yr old Mac and both have no problem accessing the cable modem. Setting up file sharing between them was just as easy, and each gets to send their data at the fastest possible speed because of the router.
