Rating: Summary: A good piece of hardware Review: I've used this router for about 6 months now and it works fairly well (notice I fairly) i rated thsi probuct 3 starsI would give it thumbs up for the ease of set up, it took about 10 minutes (if that) for me to set it up. The html forms are very easy to understand and use. I would give it thumbs down for having the same problem that a few people seem to be having also, Lockups. When I had the router save log files of traffic through it, I encountered many lockups, enough to have to disable the logs. It seemed when there was heavy traffic through the router it locked up. Once disabling the log files, it locks up less, but still locks up. Sometimes when resetting the router it loses its settings and has to be reconfigured, which only takes a minute though, once you have it memorized (due to doing it repeatadly). Anyhow I rate this item as an even 3 stars.
Rating: Summary: Linksys router review Review: This router was purchased about six months ago .... It ran fine for a while, but once we enountered technical difficulty, the real problems emerged. It is virtually impossible to get technical assistance from Linksys. You can't speak to someone or even hold for someone. The only access is to have them call you back when they are ready. We have waited four days now for them to call and have received no response. During this time, we have called again and again only to be assured thay we have been moved up in priority. Still no response. E-mail elicits no response either. Buy this if you plan to never have to use service from the manufacturer.
Rating: Summary: Performs flawlessly Review: I have been using this router for over a month now, and it has had absolutely no problems. File transfers between my computers go extremely fast (approx. 100 times the speed of downloads through my cable modem). I haven't experienced the problem some people reported of having to reset the router every so often because it gets "stuck." This must be due to their system configuration or perhaps the router isn't their problem at all. I did experience some trouble setting up, but this was not due to Linksys. The setup problems most people are experiencing is because when your cable modem provider sets you up, they record whats called the MAC address of your ethernet card. If you connect with hardware that has a different MAC address, it will not let you through. This is to prevent people from using routers, and for general security purposes. Unfortunately, the Linksys technical support person was unable to figure out the problem...he seemed to know what it was, but had me change it to the wrong address. Here is how you solve this problem: Go to start, run. Type "winipcfg". Select your ethernet card from the drop down list and write down the MAC address that is displayed (It is labeled "adapter address" on my computer). Now, direct your browser to 192.168.1.1 and find the WAN MAC address. Click on it and change it to be the same as what you wrote down. The LAN MAC address doesn't need to be changed. Another option if you prefer not to monkey with your computer's settings is to call your cable modem provider, and tell them you have a new ethernet card and have them put in the WAN MAC address of your router. DO NOT tell them you have a router, they're usually prohibited in your subscriber agreement. Enjoy!
Rating: Summary: Its Awesome Review: The Linksys Router is amazing. It allows my roommate and I to both use the same cable modem without any wires to run through the house. I really recommend it and it is also very easy to install. Piece of cake. :)
Rating: Summary: Good not Great Review: It's a decent router. On the plus side it uses switches & browser config is very convenient. Offers basic router & NAT services. DMZ feature is handy but given some limitations you'll end up using it more than you want. The two limitations that irk me most: 1. It has the ability to drop unwanted packets (you can get a "Stealth" rating ...) but it's all or nothing. You can't filter by ip or port. So if you want to hide, you have to give up everything, including ping & traceroute. Fix with DMZ. 2. The NAT is limited to 10 "ranges" of ports that it will forward. If you need more, you have to fix it with DMZ. btw, "fix with DMZ" means you'll want to purchase a software firewall in addition to the Linky. I'm a power user so these bother me more than it will most people. On the whole it's pretty good. One word of warning: even with TCP blocking disabled, it still drops HTTP packets. So there may be problems setting up a www server. I assume NAT takes care of this, but it is noteworthy that the router treats port 80 as a special case. Another reviewer writes that it gives you a true 4 ports. Not so. If you need to use uplink you have to give up port 1. This is clearly stated in the manual.
Rating: Summary: Works great out of the box Review: I wish I had bought this sooner. We had tried a number of PC based solutions for sharing our DSL line on a six device network. All were troublesome. The installation of the Linksys router took about half an hour and we were able to link it to our existing 8 port hub. Four ports gave us the extra connections to activate two casual Ethernet plugs. (NOTE: 4 ports + 8 ports = 10 ports. Two ports are needed to link the two hubs.) The only problems we ran into were from computers that were running during the initial installation. My advice is follow the instructions and shut down all of your devices during Linksys' installation. Also, a UPS for the router is highly advised. Our main focus was internet sharing. As an added bonus, we've found the security the Linksys router provides is top notch. On this basis alone I would recommend the product.
Rating: Summary: Fullduplex-Firewall, simple set-up I bought 2 Review: LOOK NO FURTHER--I am using a configuration of 3 pcs all on Windows 2000 Professional sharing a cable modem and this thing works like a charm. Full duplex routing! And the firewall is superb. Also I am not sure why other reviewers have said they had difficulty setting it up (it is easier than figuring out how to write this review!), it took me 2 minutes, tops for a basic conficuration (no virtual Ip to Ip private networking or proxys, most dont need it anyway). The GUI is outstanding and the fact I can change the configuration from my web browser and remotely is outstanding. This product is the best at what it does, a router, switch, and firewall, there is no doubt about that.
Rating: Summary: Easy to configure, works well. Review: I was pleasantly surprised with how well this router worked. This product featured everything that I was looking for: basic firewall with logging capabilities, NAT, and DHCP (both server and client). The addition of a 4-port 10/100 switch was also good. Configuration was simple, requiring simply to DHCP an IP, then configure with an ordinary web browser. The port-forwarding capabilities are good for advanced users, allowing you to forward single ports to a specific computer -- dangerous for novices, but a nice feature. A software upgrade of the router was relatively painless. You can disable the DHCP server if you want to run your own. I use this router with the Linksys Wireless Access Point as well, and they integrate with no problem. Overall, a great router, targeted to newbies in the computer market, but feature-rich enough for techies.
Rating: Summary: Very easy router with limited forwarding Review: this is a great beginner router which can get you up and runing realy fast however those who know anything about networking will quickly notice that you cannot use ports from another machine if they are forwarded to a different machine which is really weird. This was especially important for me because w/o forwarding port 80 to my server i couldn't serv my web site however upon forwarding port 80 all the other computers on the lag were unable to go to any website through port 80 :-\
