Summary: Can't Sustain Inbound FTP Connections
Review: Two reasons I bought this: 1. To move all my computers behind a router so I wouldn't have to leave one on all the time; and 2. to be able to handle inbound FTP connections to my FTP server. The router functioned acceptably for basic functions (easy to configure, etc.), but inbound FTP connections would consistently fail after transfering a few thousand bytes. Each failure would require that the router be reset.

This item is probably OK for most people, but it couldn't handle the one primary thing that I needed, hence the low rating. It's now running as a replacement for my old hub (also a LinkSys) which has an overheating problem. You'd think I'd learn...

Summary: Would it work with a VPN?
Review: Hi, I have a personal DSL connection at home that I occasionally use to connect to my office through Shiva VPN software. I notice that the VPN software that creates a secure "tunnel" into our server park at work designates a new IP address to my home computer. Would this still work through the Linksys Router? Or would the router lock on to one IP address only??

Any help appreciated. Please mail back at stiank@<nospam>yahoo.com.

Thanks, Stian

Summary: Do not buy this router!
Review: I have had nothing but problems with this router. It locks up constantly and needs to be powered off and back on regularly. During a firmware upgrade it locked up and I had to return it for a new one. I've lived with it for over a year now and it has quit working all together. Linksys does not have an 800 number for support and they do not respond to e-mails. Get a NetGear instead. When the Linksys died I replaced it with a rt314 which works flawlessly.

Summary: Easy to install, works well!
Review: Haven't had any problems with mine. The perfect solution for a small office or a home with multiple computers. Can be configured via any computer (through any web browser)--just set it and forget it!

Summary: The ultimate peace of mind for cable/dsl users
Review: You can't beat a hardware fireware for security on a DSL/Cable line. With either of these 'always-on' connections, your computer is a easy target for hackers, but the Lynksys will keep you secure.

Aside from the security benefits (which is fully configurable with a great web based interface) you get an easy way to share your connection with multiple PCs. This is great if you have kids with their own PC, PCs in many rooms, or you want to plug in a laptop with out swapping cables everytime you want to connect.

Summary: NetGear RT314 IS MUCH BETTER
Review: Try Netgear for better shared internet and firewall protection.

Summary: Excellent product, and now SO CHEAP!
Review: I bought this thing for around ... about a year ago to share a cable modem connection with my housemates. Easy to set up, good instructions, and works like a charm!

Only slight problem was very long wait time when I once called the free tech support number. The machine said I'd be on hold for 90 minutes, and i figured it out myslef in that time...

... for this thing is truly a bargain.

Summary: Easy installation, great performance
Review: The router's setup could not be easier. After plugging it in, all you have to do to change the settings is to log into it through a web browser. If that wasn't easy enough, it also comes with a CD-ROM that has video instructions on how to use it. This router also can act as a firewall. After installing and configuring it, I could not tell any difference between accessing the internet directly through my cable modem and accessing it through the router. Both were amazingly fast.
Having said all of that, I should point out that routers are not for beginners. You must know something about IP's and subnet masks before you jump in and buy one.

Summary: Easy and complete!
Review: I looked at a similar Belkin KVM switch. It had a power converter (yet another power outlet needed)and you had to purchase a cable kit seperately. The Lynksys has the cables, and gets it's power from the keyboard(s), and it costs less. Very intuitive to set up. The keyboard, mouse, and video cables are combined as one cable set, so it reduces the spaghetti factor. No software/drivers to install. Make sure you have both PCs powered off before installing, so the device is properly recognized when you start up. It worked the first time. I like the ability to switch computers by hitting the left Ctrl key twice. Great product and I highly recommend it!

Summary: Well it worked!
Review: After reading all of the reviews I was very concerned about ordering and installing the Linksys BEFSR41 Wireless Router. With more years in IT then I can count, one thing I know for sure is that the "stuff" don't work (from anyone) or at least on the first try. That help true for this router.

First of all the router needed a driver update to work with Windows ME (that is what shipped with my Dell Notebook - a rant for another review). Needless to say their was not documentation either with the router or on the site saying so. Just know ing the first thing you do is download updated routers, that solved the first problem.

The second was that you need a hard connection to initially enable the router! That sounds stupid as I purchased this with two wireless cards for the first network installation at the house! Why a wired connection, even to just enable, for a wireless network is beyond me. Tech support said it had something to do with security, I don't believe it.

After some additional tweaking, and three calls to Linksys tech support (they were great BTW, call after 7pm PST and you'll get through faster), and some calls to my Cable Modem provider (Comcast, less than adequate tech support - another rant for another time) it was up and running.

The router works as advertised except I am not getting the distance I think I should. I'll be moving the router to a central part of my house this weekend and that should take care of the coverage I need but it still will only go ~40 feet around my house through normal walls. Not good at all.

All in all it is doing what I wanted to do. To get 5 stars it would need better documentation and longer distance.
